I'm back :) my computer has been broken for a few weeks, so I have been unable to get online. I have quite a lot to update to you all:

Junior recovered well from his URI infection, after he was fully reovered he also found a new friend baby George...things were looking up or so I thought.
George had two bold patches on his back, I checked both boys over and could see lice in their fur, so I treated both boys with a spot on treatment. It all cleared up very quickly and Georges fur has now almost completely grown back.
Fast forward a few days, Junior starts itching the fur around his eyes and ears a little. I thought he was having a reaction to the spot on treatment, so I took Junior back to the vets (about the 4th time this month he's been there!) turns out he has ringworm! I also had two little rashes on my arm, he passed the ringworm on to me aswell. The vet perscribed Suroloan Ear Drops & Cutaneous suspension for Cats & dogs, this really doesn't seem to be helping! This morning he had been itching the skin around his eyes, quite badly and it had been bleeding. So I had some Canesten, clotrimazole 1% (the phamacy gave me some clotrimazole 2% to put on my arm and mine has cleared up very quickly) I thought the 2% might be too strong for Junior, so put some of the 1% cream on him. I put it around his eyes, both sides of his ears and a little on his feet to try and stop it spreading further. Is this the best thing to do for him? I scrubbed the cage, threw all the wooden items away :( washed all fleece and towels on 90degrees, threw all their toys away and they are on newspaper which I am cleaning out everyday to try and get rid of it all. The vet told me to seperate George, he doesn't seem to have caught it but when we seperate them George squeals to be with Junior. If anyones got any advice it would be very much appreciated, I haven't had internet access, so my mum has been passing some information on to me.
Thank you,
Rachel x

Hi
My 2 also have ringworm. Due to not being able to find a local small exotics vet mine are being treated by the vet at Athens zoo! (i'm in greece)

I'm also using Canesten 1% on the advice of the vet, twice a day and rub in very well to affected area. He told me that it may take 3-4 weeks to clear. I have to say that 1 of them has responded very well to treatment, the other has not improved much yet and might even be slightly worse.

On yet another trip to the zoo he shaved some of the fur surrounding the area of the ringworm so that we can really get the cream on the skin and surrounding area to stop it spreading. So now i'm just waiting to see if it improves.

I can't necessarily say that more experienced guinea vets would give Canesten? It would be interesting to hear what other more experienced owners think to this?

OMG nooooooooo this is so disappointing for you......... too many things have been happening :{

Hi Rachel,
Sorry to hear your piggy is poorly. My 2 new babies are having skin problems at the moment so I know how worrying it can be. I am currently awaiting results of skin scrapes but it looks like mine may have a fungal infection too. I have been using kwench lotion from gorgeous guineas because of the young age of my pigs and This does seem to be taking effect. in the past I have used canestan 1 % on older pigs with good results. It might be that you just need to keep perservering until it clears? I'm not sure if you have tried any of the gorgeous guinea products but they do seem to have good results and it may be worth emailing chrissie at gg for some additional advise! chrissie advised me to use aloe Vera gel on any sore patches which is very good at drying up open wounds caused by scratching. hope this helps.

The ringworm from around his eyes has gone and his hair has almost completly grown back but he had ringworm on his ears before, I think its now spread to behind his ears. His skin is very red and today he has badly scratched almost a line behind ears going down towards his face, it looks very sore and the poor thing won't let me go near this area (I don't really blame him!). I'm using the canesten 1% cream and also Nizoral baths once a week on him, this cleared both his eyes up (didn't use the Nizoral around his eyes by the way) but am not sure what to do about this new outbreak behind his ears because he wont let me touch it? On the 17th July he weighed 1,010g and I weighed him tonight and hes 977g but he seems to be eating and drinking normally :{
Looks like i'll be taking him back to the vets but just wanted your opnions first, by the way I've put him on newspaper and clean/scrub his cage everyday.

I am so sorry to hear he is unwell. I really hope he gets better soon. It sounds so hard to clear up. :(

hi, my 2 babies were positively diagnosed as having ringworm. my vet prescribed imaverol which has to be diluted and used as a bath or dabbed onto affected area. it isn't cheap (my vet charged £30 for the bottle) but it has cleared all the ringworm so worth it! hth's xx

p.s imaverol is actually for treating ringworm in cattle, horses and dogs but apparantley there isn't any drugs licensed for treating the condition in guinea pigs!

Oh nooooooooo :{
I'd be looking at giving him some syringe feeds (just my opinion love) or at least offering him small bowls of moistened pellets as well.... just to build up his weight.
If you weigh him regularly you'll be able to see his weight patterns.... i have found anything up to 30g up or down in a week is normal for my girls.
I've never experienced this before..... so hope more of the more knowledgeable peeps can help you xx>>>

Thank you for all the help & advice.
Suzy also recommended Imaverol, so I'll definatly give this a try! He has already been to the vets and ringworm was dignosed (under UV light) but the vet (I don't think he knew much about guinea pigs!the other two vets I've seen there seemed a lot better!) gave me dog/cat ear drops, they really didn't help.
The ringworm on my arm has finally almost gone :)
Thanks Glynis :) I tried syringe feeding him last night but because he had Baytril not so long ago, he stays well clear of syringes rolleyes and wouldn't let me at all. I mashed pellets up in a bowl and put them in his cage and he did eat them, so I'll do that. I'll keep a close eye on his weight, hes a small boar anyway so hasn't got much extra to loose.

Hi, I'm treating my two for ringworm with Imaverol at the moment. It seems to be working. My vet recommended also using it in a spray bottle when cleaning, spraying it all over the cage and any toys etc, then leave it to dry (don't wipe it off). That way it will deal with any fungal spores lingering in the environment and the piggies are less likely to be reinfected.

If he won't let you touch the area behind his ears you could try using a spray bottle to squirt the solution on- I have had to do this for one of my pigs and it worked pretty well

Hope they get better soon!

I got some Imaverol yesterday but was working all day and all day today, so am waiting for my OH to get home then we will treat them (I'm not very good at measuring/working things out)lol.

More bad news...On Thursday morning Junior attacked George, it was really out of the blue! they have always been fine, so I'm not sure why. George had two cuts on him, so I seperated them straight away. Their cages are next to one another now so they are chatting to each other through the bars.

Regarding Juniors weight, now they are seperated its easy to monitor exactly what they are eating. I found out Juniors a slow eater, he eats some, then leaves it then keeps going back. So when he was saving it for later I think George must have been gobbling it up because on the 1.8.11 he was 977g and yesterday he was 1,055g the most hes ever been! Hes a small boar, whereas George is an absolute Pig rolleyes he is going to be a chunky boy.

So if I can eventually re-bond the two, i'll have to closely watch Juniors food intake I think.
