I have a baby guinea pig Potato who is 9 weeks old. She has a ringworm patch under her eye and she hates having the area cleaned and ointment being applied. She shakes her head vigorously and crawls under my arms therefore rubbing off any little ointment I have managed to apply. Any advice in keeping her calm? I tried kissing noises, wheatgrass treats, calm talking/reassurance and gentle petting which she loves. When it is time for ointment time, all hell breaks loose. Her older sister Momo is fine though and no struggle. Advice sought pls 🙏🙏🙏

:agr:

I would go back to the vet and describe the problem.
Honestly a topical ointment for a baby piggy sounds difficult - I am sure your vet can come up with a more practical solution.

Is this something the vet prescribed? Vets don’t usually give topical treatment near eyes. The best treatment is oral systemic fungal treatment to kill all the spores without any risk of injury to the eyes.
Here is a link to our ringworm guide Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures
Phew! I am so glad I found this forum. I have been following advice from a rescue centre in LA. I will book a vet appointment to an exotic specialist post haste!

Thank you so much for the advice. An oral treatment sounds so much better. I shall ring the vet first thing tomorrow. 🙏

We never advise you home treat. Doing so can mask the issue and sometimes make it worse. Your best bet is to always take piggy to the vet for proper diagnosis and recommended treatment. Have a look on the link below for your nearest vet.

Unfortunately with the expansion of the internet there are many practices demonstrated worldwide that aren’t necessarily best practice but are assumed to be acceptable or advisable because if the number of followers etc. . On this forum we always advocate veterinary diagnosis and veterinary treatment. Oral treatment is by far the most effective treatment.
Please do take care as ringworm is one of the few nasties transmissible from piggies (and other species) to humans. Hygiene precautions when handling the piggies is advisable until you are sure there are no live spores.

***update***
I took both Momo and Tato to the vet this afternoon. The vet took hair follicle samples for culture and I will find out by Monday if it is definitely ringworms. In the meantime, she gave me a cleaning solution. It is hibiscus and quite sticky and I need do dilute with water. It is still a struggle with Tato

They can usually tell whether it’s ringworm without doing a sample. Was the vet experienced in treating guinea pigs?

It’s good you’ve gotten them to the vet. Hope it doesn’t get too bad. If it is ringworm then hibiscrub won’t help.

It is my local vet and they have a piggy guide on their website. I prefer CJ Vets recommended by this forum but they are not taking any new patients. I chose one nearby just so the piggies do not get too stressed from the drive. The vet said she had to do a culture as she needs to abso make sure it is ringworm and she doesnt prescribe meds if it is not the case :soz: The only other piggy specialist I know is 1 hr drive from me in Banstead. Tbh this is what made me look for dealing with this at home instead...

It’s not likely they would get stressed travelling a little further. Was there only one vet on the list that’s near you? It would be better to drive the hour than home treat something you’re not sure of. We can only advise you, but it’s your choice what you do.

The map on your list only has CJ vets near me 😔. The other one is Epsom. Well lets see what the test says by Monday and treat the ringworm. For any next issues or illnesses (I hope not for a long long long time or never), I will go to Kriek and Gibson. Now I know an hours drive wouldnt stress them out. I read somewhere before that it does. There are so many contrasting opinions and I only want the best care for the little piggies.

Would there be any other piggy recommended vets on your list in the South West?!

How about Beaumont Sainsbury’s animal hospital in north London? There’s blackwater valley in frimley green and Camberley. Or Tilehurst veterinary centre in Berkshire. Unfortunately they’re a bit spread out around there.
