Teenage Guinea Pig
I haven’t been on in a while but just spent 5 hours at an emergency vet last night and need some advice. Exotic vets are hard to find in my area and I called 6 emergency centers before someone would see me.
5 year old female piggy, not spayed lives with another female same age. Been keeping an eye on her eyes for the past week as she has had some crust and not been as spunky as herself but eating well. Yesterday I got home from night shift and only had bananas so they got a small slice and she wasn’t having it. I thought she was being picky and gave her a slice of cucumber and went to bed. When I get up she’s sitting at the front of the cage puffed up and miserable, no begging or eating as usual. I take her out and she cries (never cried this much) and starts trembling.
Long story short at the vet they are stumped, her teeth are amazing for 5yrs old (thank you very much) and X-ray shows some gas but physically she’s not bloated and abdomen is soft. Temp is low but still normal. We get a very clear urine sample and specific gravity is 1.03
she cries when you palpate her bladder but no blood or infection and X-ray showed no stones or sludge. Her lungs and heart looked and sounded good. Small ulcer on her right eye(from kidney failure?) that I am putting erythromycin in.
Here’s the plan gabapentin for pain and simethicone and critical care as well as cisapride. Also subq fluids.
My problem is she is just sitting there all night eyes wide open, is she in that much pain or is smthn else also going on? I’ve never had a pig with eyes like this it’s real weird, she won’t close them or relax, did she have a stroke or smthn? What else can I do to keep her comfortable?
