Hi Everyone, a little over two weeks ago one of our beloved guinea pigs developed an abscess on her cheek. The vet recommended that it was marcupialised. The operation took place within a couple of days. However, after the marcupialisation, the abscess did not continue to drain out, despite my very best efforts, repeated visits to the vets and following all the instructions I had been given for her after-care. I returned to the vets yesterday and he has said that it is very unlikely that she will recover and that she is probably suffering, so I am building up to make the call to have her put to sleep. She has only just turned two. I know that I probably can't change the outcome, but I just wondered if anyone had ever experienced anything similar? Thank you.

I am not very experienced, but the first thing I would ask is how often per day were you flushing it, and what with?
Also what antibiotics and what dose was she given?

When one of our pigs had a face abscess, I found that i had to be quite 'firm' with the flushing process and keep up with it to prevent the hole closing (his was not stitched open).
I also found when we switched antibiotics we got a better result (after guidance from this Forum).
At that time our vet was great, but not super experienced with piggies so advice from this Forum really helped.

Sorry to hear you are going through this- as Swissgreys says there are several people here with direct experience and hopefully they can share their experiences too. Not sure if it helps but I think there is a particular antibiotic that some people have found more helpful than others. Others will know the name.
