Still raw from Sampson's death and now Leonard is not good.
Leonard my lovely long haired piggie ( non-neutered male) has done several pink wees this evening. Fleecy beds are all tainted with patches of pink and pink calcium deposit. Can see pink residue on end of his willy so it definitely is him rather than cagemate.

I have not heard him squeak when weeing though. He is eating fine and was asking for veg. Slightly quiet but he is quiet by nature so not obvious.

Vets in the morning (Sunday, great) - from other UTI posts, is it Septrin that seems to work better for UTIs? And also try and get pain relief? I have a probiotic in stock ready. I am just praying it is a UTI rather than stones:(

Would welcome any tips for vet conversation. Thanks.

Thanks Debbie, think I just felt doomy when I found the patches. Will ask for Septrin and I am watching him like a hawk.
Hope you are mending now. x

Oh no, sorry to read this. If you can take a fresh sample with you it is often welcome at the vets so the can test it with a dipstick. As Debbie said Septrim is widely regarded as the antibiotic of choice for UTI's. Healing vibes to Leonard x

Bertie has had wee infection and showed no signs at all apart from blood in his cage. I was unsure the other day if he had it again, so I gave him parsley, cucumber, cos they make him wee more. Probiotics, cos he likes them. I think he had had too much carrot and that caused it!rolleyes

Well got to see the on call vet this morning at the surgery and he examined Leonard (the vet happened to be totally gorgeous which was a bit distracting;) but I managed).

I also took some fleece with the pinky red wee on which helped emphasise the symptoms. I did not manage to take a wee sample in (L would not pee in a bowl) so have to try again tomorrow. But based on examination, vet decided to treat for UTI and armed with forum information I asked for Septrin rather than baytril and he agreed with that. Metacam as well for any pain. So will monitor closely - he seems a bit brighter but that may be the metacam helping.

Thanks for the septrin advice - it helps for the vet conversation to be prepared.

update

Not good news re Leonard. I gave the septrin a couple of days but Leonard was not really any better and still blood in some wees. So vet today - exotics vet which was good. He did thorough exam and found a reaction when palpating left kidney. So he stayed at vets and had xray - 2 stones in the bladder - l large, 1 smaller - apparently unusually far back in bladder. They also did a catheter wee sample and check tubes not blocked.

He is now home but looks so out of it and traumatised. He has had some opiate type pain relief. He has had some tiny bit of lettuce and cauli leaf. Will he rally a bit when the opiates wear off?
I have sachet of critical care ready but just wanted to give him a little rest before messing with him (vets gave some fluid and syringe of food around 5.30)

Oh poor Leonard. I am very sorry to hear this and I really hope he gets better soon.

Hi D, sorry i did not hear the name of the drug properly - I know it is like morphine.
The plan is bladder stone op on Friday which scares me witless but the vet wants to crack on whilst he is still stronger. He has done quite a few similar ops in piggies and various species. I am not keen on Friday procedures because of things going wrong over the weekend (like with Sampson) but vet is keen to progress.

He is still out of it at the minute - just going to try him with some bits of veggies.

Do you know what time he was given the drug? I think it takes about nine hours to get out of their system.

I really hope all goes well. What a dreadful situation to find yourself in, especially so soon after losing dear Sampson.

Sending you hugs x

I think it was late afternoon eg 4.30 to 5 so yes still well in his system. He has not moved but has just tried a few strands of hay put under his nose. I will get up in the night and syringe feed to keep him going.

Don't know how you do this so often Debbie. x

I'm really struggling since the accident. Not sleeping well so energy levels at rock bottom and have had a couple of poorly piggies too. How's your hand? xx

So sorry to hear about Leonard, I hate stones with a vengence:( Will be thinking of your little guy and hope his op goes well. I am taking Eddie to the vets tomorrow for the same reason, he's been on Septrin for 5 days but no improvement. Hope Leonard makes a speedy recovery from his op xx

Oh Debbie that is not got. Hand still a bit of a problem - on antibiotics now as part of wound was infected. Good job I can syringe with the good hand! And that leonard sits still in my claw like hold with the manky hand - what are we like?

What a pair we are! Surely it can only get better!

I think I've overdone things today. Hopefully I can get a good nights sleep.

I so hope Leonard perks up soon. x

I'm so desperately rooting for Leonard, such a gentle boy who had such a sad life before you adopted him:(

He and you are in my thoughts.
(I'll be in touch tomorrow)

Huge hugs.

- And to you Debbie, both take care.

He is moving more now and just had 10 -12ml of syringe food but then got fed up. Has had some cucumber too. He has done a few poos which is good. Will try again in morning:)

I see you set your alarm.

Come on Leonard, get eating and well ready for Friday
x

did set alarm but was awake anyway worrying!rolleyes

Leonard has had a bit more syringe food and then some cucumber, lettuce and munched some hay so looking bit stronger but not keen on moving from his bed. hope he can have some rest today now before big op tomorrow.

Has anyone got any tips for me for after the op that have worked for them? Will I need to put a divider up to keep Barney separate?

Aw, i am so sorry to hear about Leonard! Its good that he is getting stronger and still eating, keeping my fingers crossed it continues, will be thinking of you both tomorrow xx

If he's still not back to full strength tomorrow, I would be inclined to say it would be better to put the op off until early next week. Of course, there is also always the risk that the stones could start to cause more serious problems. Was he ok in himself before the xrays yesterday, apart from peeing blood?

Good point and I will raise that with the vet before he goes in. Leonard is much more active this evening and has enjoyed his veggies but is still not strong overall. Still passing wees tinged with blood. I think the vet wanted to act sooner before he lost weight and as the smaller stone may be near to the top of the urethra. He was Ok ish before the xrays and catheter etc, those procedures seemed be v stressful for him.

Leonard is going in for his bladder op this morning - as long as vet thinks he is fit enough. He seems a bit better this morning. I have just been sick with anxiety
Please send Leonard some healing thoughts if you can.
