I know I know.. I’m terrible. I was meant to be slowing down on the Guinea pigs after the loss of my two girlies recently. And after it didn’t work out bonding the two lonely boars together I just couldn’t bare thinking of them living alone even next to each other. Henry kept chewing on the bars towards Lion, Buttons and Emily’s cage and being the cheeky and mischievous boy he is I knew he needed a female companion sooner rather than later. He’s too social to be alone.
Newton of course will need a friend too, But I feel he’s coping better than Henry for now.

When I saw Luna Lanshark advertised on PetRescue at a rescue in Melbourne I thought immediately that she sounds like a good fit for Hernry. She sounded confident, quirky and mischievous.
So yesterday after gently telling Jon that I am indeed getting another pig despite being 8 months preggers, we drove half way to meet some kind volunteers to pick up Luna.

She is living next to Henry for a few days for a slow introduction, Henry is being Henry and chewing at the bars to get to her. Luna isn’t paying much attention which is fab. Fingers crossed they like each other. But if not at least I have the option of Newton too!

Luna is 4 years old and you can see from the photos why her full name is ‘Luna Landshark’ 🤣
She’s settling in well.

Aww, she’s adorable and I don’t think I’d have been able to resist her charms, either. What a lucky little lady she is finding her way to you and your family x

Ah she’s beautiful and hopefully just right for Henry ……one more, two more ……it’s make much difference does it Hannah 🤭
Sending love to you , Jon , baby and your gorgeous furry, hairy coated and feathered animals ❤️

I’ve never seen a pig with such an impressive shark fin! What an interesting hairdo she has🥰

She is gorgeous! I love her quirky hairstyle. Hope she gets on famously with Henry. He better calm himself down 🤣

What an impressive fur-do! I hope bonding goes well for this gorgeous girl ♥️

Unfortunately bonding didn’t go well..at all!
When I first introduced Henry all was going okay for the first little while. There was lots of circling each other and humping from both pigs but nothing too much. They shared some grass and was being okay.
IMG_5580.webpBut then about an hour in the pen Luna decided, for some reason that she was annoyed by him and kept chasing him, and then launching for him pulling out his hair. Henry was really scared of her by this point running away with her in hot pursuit, they had a few little scuffles and Henry tried jumping out the pen. So I called it off.

I Also tried with Newton. In a different area to what I tried Henry. They were together for about 5 hours in the hallway doing pretty good I thought, sharing hay. Newton was popcorning they told each other off a little but respectfully.

I throughly cleaned out the cage and put them in together, first 20 minutes fine. But then Luna got defensive and worried, she rumblestrutted and teeth chattered her way into causing a huge fight ending in injury to Newton. We immediately pulled Luna out.

I thought Newton was having a heart attack or stoke as he was sitting there twitching his head for a couple of minutes, I couldn’t believe it! I gave him a minute before talking to him and bending down to stoke his head. He stopped the head twitching and I felt safe to pick him up, quickly I noticed it was his lip that was injured. And the twitching was a reaction of the pain and shock. Poor poor Newton had a big bite to his upper lip, it looked so sore! I feel awful for him!
I gave him some loxicom (metacam) for the pain and inflammation. And he quite quickly calmed down and thankfully went back to eating hay.
I’ve been giving him the loxicam twice daily for 2 days so far and will reduce to once a day. It’s a little swollen still but the area it’s in and the tear to the lip I’m unsure how it will heal back to normal? He is eating well and seems his happy little bouncy self which is a relief. I was so worried! Newtons my main man! I’m keeping a very close eye on it to make sure there is no puss or infection starting.
This was his lip straight after the fight:

I'm absolutely gutted that Luna hasn’t taken to either man, and wasn’t expecting both to be a failure. Shes a sweet little pig on her own, confident and friendly and ever so soft!
I also feel even worse as the rescue went to a lot of effort to organise volunteers to meet me half way picking her up so I didn’t have to do a 5 hour round trip while I’m 8 months pregnant. And now it looks like she’s going to have to go back and we will have to try and organise a journey back for the little lady.
Poor Luna, I hate that it hasn’t worked out. Of course I’d love to keep her regardless but I don’t think I should ask Jon if it’s okay if I have a fourth cage 😬. 3 cages is enough.
I could potentially try again with Henry next week. But after Newton getting hurt I’m a bit worried. I did suggest trying with the trio but Jon said absolutely not as he also doesn’t want another injury.. he’s thinking vet bills!

I gave Luna a cuddle last night..such a shame when things don’t work out. I feel guilty for Newton, Henry and Luna and the rescue!

It's such a shame when piggies have other ideas to us. Try not to feel too bad about it. The rescue only want what's best for their piggies. There will be a girly out there somewhere that one of your boys is going to get along with. Have a long distance hug. :hug:Cos a close cuddle is impossible as you are now only a couple of weeks of giving birth EEK!

So sorry that things didn’t work out with the bonding.
Hope the boys have recovered from their encounter with Luna and that she will find her perfect companion.
