I was wondering what your thoughts are on lettuce. It's just that I have read on several occasions that it is meant to be given in small amounts and just occasionally due to the high calcium content.
Thank you :)

Well I could be wrong and I don't wish to scare-monger about it, but it's just what I've read in the past and wondered if someone really knew :)

Everywhere I've looked online says that lettuce is low in calcium. I feed it daily and I know others who specifically feed a low calcium diet do too. Would love to see an article saying otherwise though as I guess you never know what you read on the internet Is true :p But this is the first time I'be heard it being high in calcium...image.webp

The biggest revelation for me is that tomato vines are poisonous! :yikes: I feel like a terrible owner for even trying to feed Pol and Sage that! (They wouldn't touch it though, they're fussy :P) x

Oh no! Lol I think they must be quite good at knowing what they shouldn't eat anyway, would have to for living in the wild!

I really hope someone in the know gets back to us on this one.... I'm very very worried now! Am about to check out thepiggyhub too, to brush up on my veg knowledge :P x

what type is classed as leafy green? We buy a trio lettuce, it had red and green in it, like a frizzy lettuce or whatever you call it.

Excuse the questions.. I lost a boar to bladder stones this year so I'm very paranoid about what I give them now... it stresses me out if I'm totally honest.

Yes, the frizzy stuff or stuff that basically isn't the thick watery lettuce similar to iceberg or romaine, I'll try get a pic..

That came out wrong.. not been sleeping well due to this damn cyst and someones dog barking at 4 am.. anyway I meant, I buy a trio, it had red leaf and green leaf, the green is frizzy.

I have heard from somewhere that lettuce is high calcium ! The information is so conflicting ! Even Wiebke says so in her sticky. I rarely give lettuce nowadays . The debate about whether it's bad can continue - basically - there's not much in it that is good for guinea pigs !

whenever I get confused , I refer back to the sticky ...

https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk...or-a-balanced-general-guinea-pig-diet.116460/

... and as many of you may already be aware, the " core " of my guinea pigs' diet is taken from a diet recommended by some experts ...

1 piece cucumber
1 sprig of dill or coriander
1 small piece of spring green
1 piece green pepper
2 pieces of celery
1 french bean.

... twice a day per piggy
