Lettuce And Calcium

Hi, sorry bit confused, can't find where on the sticky it says about lettuce...?

you're right - lettuce isn't on Wiebke's sticky. My view on lettuce comes from lots of threads and looking at websites. There is a lot of conflicting information about whether it can be fed and how often. What I am saying is, there is no nutritional value in it for guinea pigs and therefore no reason why is needs to be given.

Ah ok, well it is hard to know, any one can write anything on the Internet really. I feed it because of a lot of things I've read lol Long as we're doing what we think is best and mine love it and have never had a problem feeding it so far :)

Maybe it's iceberg lettuce you're thinking of piggyowner? I've read in lots of places that that is bad and low in nutrition!image.webp

I agree . It's hard to know .

I have heard from somewhere that lettuce is high calcium ! The information is so conflicting ! Even Wiebke says so in her sticky. I rarely give lettuce nowadays . The debate about whether it's bad can continue - basically - there's not much in it that is good for guinea pigs !

whenever I get confused , I refer back to the sticky ...

... and as many of you may already be aware, the " core " of my guinea pigs' diet is taken from a diet recommended by some experts ...

1 piece cucumber
1 sprig of dill or coriander
1 small piece of spring green
1 piece green pepper
2 pieces of celery
1 french bean.

... twice a day per piggy
Oooh that's pretty much identical to what I feed mine :)

I alternate between spring greens and red/gem/romaine lettuce...

lettuces are low calcium and the best choice of food for bladder piggies, according to our vet (specialist) - mollie has IC and a problem with calcium salts and her main fresh food is now lettuces :) (although i always fed them anyway!)
