As some of you may remember, my darling Himi Shambo, had an eye pop earlier this year, which resulted in removal of the eye. This opened up a whole host of problems as he tragically went downhill very quickly afterwards, due to neurological issues. After throwing everything possible at him to help him recover, it was clear it was all in vain. He was suffering so badly, which resulted in the heart breaking decision of us having him put to sleep.
Well, his son, Bubbles, has also developed an eye pop. Obviously I am very distressed, due to the outcome of Shambo's situation, however, I have caught this much earlier this time & will be taking him to the vets today. Wish me luck!

Back from the vets. The dye in the eye hasn't shown up any scratches or injuries & no sign of any foreign bodies behind the eye. They have put some eye drops in to keep it moist & Bubs has had some Metacam. Taking him back tomorrow for an x-ray which concerns me as I was hoping for something obvious to be detected today so that it could be treated. This means it could be a number of things, such as an abcess, tumor, elongated teeth roots. Hopefully things will be clearer tomorrow.

Sending you huge hugs. You have been so unlucky.Fingers and numerous paws crossed for his recoveey

Update on Mr. Delicious (Bubbles): He has come through the anaesthetic fine. The xray is not showing a mass/tumor or anything. His roots are slightly elongated but not massively in their opinion. Eye pressure etc has been checked & all is normal but his jaw is slightly out of alignment. She is going to consult with another vet to work out a course of action.

Vet has just phoned again. The vet she has consulted with (J) has disagreed with her and said she thinks there IS a lump/mass/tumor which in her opinion is likely to have been caused by the roots being elongated.
She (vet A) is going to speak to a dental specialist in Torquay (I have also mentioned Simon Maddock to her) and they will try anti-inflammatories. She sounded reluctant to give me a good outcome for surgery, almost to the point of saying they didn't think they would like to attempt it. Starting to lose faith in this practice  Waiting for another call back, but looks likely he will be home tonight & I will be syringe feeding him. Sadly, the vet who specialises in piggies (who moved heaven & earth to sort out my Rillo 2 years ago & IS vet J) has been very unwell herself and only just returned after more than a year off, as part-time & she has not been available at the surgery for me to see. So confused. Feel like I was given a ray of hope & now it's been dashed.

Sorry to hear that but at least they are looking into it for you. Am sure they will do the right thing.
Thanks. I am a little concerned as with Shambo, they removed his eye & one vet actually thought the neurological damage he suffered afterwards, which resulted in his paralysis & rapid decline may have been caused by the surgery itself in one way or another, which makes me think maybe this is why they're so reluctant to operate too close to the brain. Of course I may just be grasping at straws or looking for reasons that aren't there, or someone to blame. I will have a proper chat with them when I pick him up. I guess I'm just angry.
Although I can never imagine my life without guins, it breaks my heart when these things happen & I wish I didn't love them as much as I do. They bring me so much joy & so much pain at the same time if you get my meaning. I think in future I shall limit myself to two only.

Oh it must be awful for you. Maybe you should express your feelings to the vet (and mention your previous experience) and just ask for as much info as they can give. It is terribly sad when our little buddies are poorly but it only hurts so much because we love them so much and that brings joy into our lives.

What a stressful situation you are having. It is very difficult when you feel the vet does not understand.

It's the same practice that treated Shambo (and Rillo) so they know the history & my concern. The problem is there are so many different vets there, that only work specific days/times etc & since J has been ill & come back part-time it's very difficult to see the same vet each time. Obviously with piggies, I only tend to take them to the vets when I notice something up, which is often a last minute appointment as I'm in such a rush to get them in to be on the safe side, rather than wait maybe a few days for a specific vet. We all know how good these little guys are at masking things.

Bubby is home. Have given him some Critical Care & he is having nibbles, albeit very small ones independently. Got a straight answer from the vet; although it doesn't look like there is a cyst, tumor etc, things are suggesting otherwise. The roots are elongated & still waiting to hear from the specialist. Bubs is very tired but very happy to see Rillo & the other girls. He is currently having floor time.

Bubbles does NOT like to be syringe fed! He is by far the worst of the lot when it comes to syringe feeding & fights me all the way. If only he realised I was trying to help him. He's quite happy munching on it when it's in but actually getting the syringe in his mouth is an absolute nightmare! Even tried giving it to him in a dropper & on a spoon instead but oh no, he wouldn't have that either! He IS attempting to eat some Blueberry & Timothy hay but not enough to sustain himself so I have given him his meds this morning (Cisapride & metacam), 2ml of Critical Care with added vitamin C drops (that's all I could get in him), 1ml of water and now he is sat on the floor by Rillo's cage (just so he can see her & she can encourage him to munch) with his food. He's very quiet, but alert, not taking his eyes off of me in case I advance with a syringe I expect.

Poor little Bubbles. Its such a lot for a little fellah to go through. Sincerely hoping that everything works out all right for him. In 2008, I noticed that my boy Oboe's left eye was protruding slightly more than the right. My vet could do nothing about it, so you are lucky to have Vets that do so much. My boy later had a stroke and had to be PTS.

Sorry to hear that, so sad losing a piggy, it breaks your heart :(

Managed to get 2ml of Critical care in him at 1pm, another 4mls just now as well as 1ml of water & 0.1 ml of Cisapride. He is now having floor time (mind you, he's been having it since 9am!) & is sulking, while chewing on a few blades of grass so things are looking up. Have noticed as well that his eye isn't looking so bulbous now. Don't get me wrong, it's still protruding but not as much as it was. No news from the specialist yet but the vet will get back to me as soon as she hears anything.

Update on Bubs: He is eating very small amounts independently, but I am supplementing with Critical Care until he starts munching with gusto. The eye is looking good & he seems to be back to his old self pretty much. Vet got back to me. The specialist is in Swindon (bit of a way from me!) & wants £170 for a consultation ONLY and then another £700 to run a CT scan. Firstly, there is no way I could travel to Swindon as my own health is pretty shocking & secondly, as much as I love my furbabies, I simply cannot afford that, what with the cost of any treatment on top, once diagnosis has been made. Even MY vet said she thought the prices were rather extortionate! So, the plan of action is to keep up with the anti-inflammatories for a few days, a 3 day course of anti-biotics, just to be on the safe side & possibly trimming the incisors & taking the molars down a little depending on how he responds. At the moment, I am happy with that as like I have said, he has perked right up & seems to be pretty comfortable now.

What! £170 just for a consultation! I thought my vet was expensive, and he only charges £30!

Sounds like poor Bubbles is on the mend. Fantastic!
