What! £170 [you]just[/you] for a consultation! I thought my vet was expensive, and he only charges £30!
I do sometimes think they charge what they like because they know how much we love our animal buddies. I did try to get pet insurance but that was sky-high because guinea pigs are not native to the UK and are classed as "Exotic".

Sounds like poor Bubbles is on the mend. Fantastic!
This is a guinea dental specialist. My actual vet only costs £8.35 for a consultation (thank God!) & are pretty reasonable with their prices but Bubs is proving to present a bit of a more complex problem as nothing is 100% clear with him & because I lost Shambo this year in a similar way (he has a suspected hay poke, resulting in his eye being removed, which then caused neurological problems & paralysis, ending in us having to do the kindest thing and have him put to sleep) they are a little wary of messing around with him too much.

Agreed Black Jack. My vets are quite reasonably priced but they're not specialists when it comes to guineas. Some of their vets have guineas themselves and there are also a couple who champion for guins as they feel they get a rough deal because they are such little pets that many vets won't even consider attempting to sort out (as one vet I saw many years ago stated, "Well they don't live very long anyway". Pft! He'd obviously never heard of Sweetie, the guin who lived till the ripe old age of 15!
But you are correct, some tend to take advantage. This is why I'm hoping my 2 kids go on to become vets as they're completely guinea crazy ;)

Aww what a beautiful little boy - hope he recovers okay! Lots of healing wheeks coming your way. :)

Do you think it could have been caused by the hay ball in his cage? He could have poked his eye on the hay in the ball. I would probably remove it and switch to a hay bag with holes big enough for him to comfortably climb inside.

I have experienced hay pokes to piggies without using a hayball so there is no guarantee a haybag would be any better. One of my piggies had a hay poke to the eye from hay on the floor of the cage. I have also had experience of hay pokes from both long cut and short cut hay, so don't think there is any straight forward answer.

Thanks. Definitely not the Hay Ball as this is an old pic and all the guins have hay balls but I fill them fresh veg instead now. They have their hay in racks instead or toilet roll tubes stuffed with hay (they LOVE this). I'm thinking maybe he got some wood chippings in his eye, even a bit of litter as he sleeps in his litter tray sometimes, but hard to know for sure. Have switched to fleece liners instead of chippings for the minute but it's one of those things, could even just have been caused by his roots rubbing or something :/

That's great you're taking so many precautions! :D

Some people can experience problems with hay racks/balls even after long term usage and are assured they don't cause problems. I think hay racks can have problems too. You might want to see this: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/hay-rack-warning.116115/

The toilet roll tubes sound fine though. :)

Wow, how horrible! Fortunately, I use the wooden Hay Racks (Totally wooden & solid, with an open top & small wire section in the front, like a letter box) but it will certainly make me more cautious. Thanks for the warning.

Nice! I just put big piles of hay all over my piggies' hutch, gives it a nice natural look. :)

Update on Bubs. He is eating quite happily on his own so I have stopped his Critical Care. He is back to his usual self, albeit with a slightly more protruding eye. Check up on Monday :D
Woohoo! :yahoo:

Edit: Well, woohoo other than the bigger eye. Hope he's going to be okay!

Dental work all booked in for next Wednesday. The vets are going to trim his teeth all round, just so it relieves any pressure. The eye itself is healthy looking still, just protruding and Bubs seems well in himself.
