Hi,Does anyone have an tips on grooming long haired piggies, particular of you have a Texel/ Lunkarya type piggie, I have brushed pepper since we have had him but he is getting more and more uncooperative and I am worried about his coat getting matted.
Here is his coat for reference! View attachment 157545
Thank you! He gets a snack whilst brushing but will still try to kick me when ever I get near his bumHi,
I've 4 girls, 2 of which are Texels, and one a Texel cross. Shortly after they came to us in the summer I trimmed them with hair trimmers, and have combed them every few days since then. One is particularly skittish and squeeks a lot when I'm combing her back half, but I'd say that with stroking her lots in between the combing, she's getting more comfortable with the combing. Haven't really any tips, other than the usual things like talking with them calmly and offering something tasty while you comb them.
She looks very similar to pepper he is very Curly underneath and round his bum, luckily he doesn’t have any mats yet but I worry that I am not brushing him enough as he seems to hate it so much! I trimmed him in the summer and it was much easier to manage but his winter coat is crazy!I had to give our Fuzzy a trim at the weekend. She’s got a long coat with quite a curl in it underneath. I feel terrible, because it looked ok on top, but underneath near the back there was an awful mat! I had to snip it out, so I gave the rest of her back end a trim too. I’m not sure about how to groom underneath her though? She’s got quite a curly tummy, but I can’t see her wanting to be brushed there! Here she is enjoying a post-trim snack.
Mine with a tightly curled tummy seems to keep it nicely groomed herself :-) I never seem to need to groom underneath them :-)Or maybe she’ll groom her tummy herself, since she’s always pootling around down there looking for caecotrophs?!
You mention "brushing" ... my difficult girl really hates me to use a brush on her back end, but I bought a wooden "men's beard" comb, and she doesn't hate that quite so much. I alternate each comb through with a soothing stroke of my hand, and she's definitely not responding as upset as she did weeks ago. A wide toothed wooden comb may be worth a try for Pepper...She looks very similar to pepper he is very Curly underneath and round his bum, luckily he doesn’t have any mats yet but I worry that I am not brushing him enough as he seems to hate it so much! Better that than caked in poop and pee! Sheepy (the alpaca who’s hair never stopped growing) had far worse!I don’t know about others but I just cut my Peruvian short. She doesn’t like the brushing, I’m not gonna show her so why stress about it.
I just hope no one judges my skills as a dog groomer based on my ability to cut my piggy

Still better than before though @Betsy! Fresh and clean! You've done a good job. Unlike the hack job I did on poor Patsy's bum!

She wouldn't let me finish it off so it looked nice! It was her first bum trim after all. Betsy's used to it and lets me finish it off properly.

Would love to help if I was closer! It was a two man job but I managed to trim him today with the help of some carrot! A few kicks to say get off my bum but hopefully he will be a little more manageable!
This is what is worrying me slightly he is actually getting worse! But hopefully he will get used to it eventually!Would love to help if I was closer!![]()
They definitely get used to it after time, Sheepy was terrible at first but used to quite like a brush and a tidy after a good few months here! Especially when he got his cataracts, then the horrible stroke my poor boy, I could get to and scratch the bits he couldn’t!![]()
How often do you groom him/try!?This is what is worrying me slightly he is actually getting worse! But hopefully he will get used to it eventually!
I have started trying every other day at the moment, he seems to be better with a comb but still tries to kick me if I go near his back legs or bum! When we first got him we would brush him regularly but it seems as he has got more confident he has become a bit of a diva! I will preserver though! How often do you groom him/try!?
My Jasper has got a real issue with his face being touched (ears and nose got nice bites from his past cagemate poor boy), the first few weeks I could hardly get near him but I’ve been getting him used to it gradually and he’s so much better after 7 weeks! I can stroke over both eyes now, even look in his ears if he’s in a good mood! And stroke all over! Loves a fuzzy bum scratch too!![]()
Luigi is also a massive diva so totally understand!I have started trying every other day at the moment, he seems to be better with a comb but still tries to kick me if I go near his back legs or bum!
