Does anyone have an tips on grooming long haired piggies, particular of you have a Texel/ Lunkarya type piggie, I have brushed pepper since we have had him but he is getting more and more uncooperative and I am worried about his coat getting matted.

Here is his coat for reference! image.webp

Hi,
I've 4 girls, 2 of which are Texels, and one a Texel cross. Shortly after they came to us in the summer I trimmed them with hair trimmers, and have combed them every few days since then. One is particularly skittish and squeeks a lot when I'm combing her back half, but I'd say that with stroking her lots in between the combing, she's getting more comfortable with the combing. Haven't really any tips, other than the usual things like talking with them calmly and offering something tasty while you comb them.

Thank you! He gets a snack whilst brushing but will still try to kick me when ever I get near his bum 😂 I guess I will just have to try and hope he eventually gets used it it! He won’t even let me give him a bum trim at the moment!

I had to give our Fuzzy a trim at the weekend. She’s got a long coat with quite a curl in it underneath. I feel terrible, because it looked ok on top, but underneath near the back there was an awful mat! I had to snip it out, so I gave the rest of her back end a trim too. I’m not sure about how to groom underneath her though? She’s got quite a curly tummy, but I can’t see her wanting to be brushed there! Here she is enjoying a post-trim snack.

Or maybe she’ll groom her tummy herself, since she’s always pootling around down there looking for caecotrophs?!

She looks very similar to pepper he is very Curly underneath and round his bum, luckily he doesn’t have any mats yet but I worry that I am not brushing him enough as he seems to hate it so much! I trimmed him in the summer and it was much easier to manage but his winter coat is crazy!

It tricky isn’t it? Since spotting the mat I’ve been carefully finger grooming her, so hopefully I can keep the lovely curls but avoid the dreadlocks!

Mine with a tightly curled tummy seems to keep it nicely groomed herself :-) I never seem to need to groom underneath them :-)

You mention "brushing" ... my difficult girl really hates me to use a brush on her back end, but I bought a wooden "men's beard" comb, and she doesn't hate that quite so much. I alternate each comb through with a soothing stroke of my hand, and she's definitely not responding as upset as she did weeks ago. A wide toothed wooden comb may be worth a try for Pepper...

Thanks, I will give that a try!

Sorry my hair is a mess, I normally brush the boys before my own hair. 😆 When Pedro is being super uncooperative, I hold him like this, hand under his chest and his butt on my lap, and start brushing. There are times where he is super chill and I don't need to restrain him, but most of the time he is a squeaking wriggle worm.

When Pedro is being a good boy 👼

Aaand when Pedro is at his worst as a dramatic potato. 😆

Also regarding the comb and brush, if he feels wriggly, he will wriggle at the comb. XD He hates both.

A lot of pigs are fussy about being touched at all on the back ends... don't see why it should be super-sensitive but perhaps it's a dominance thing like from being mounted and they feel they have to complain.
I might try these tips on my lockdown long-haired daughter!

So, I am working on decoding guinea pigs. Licking can mean:

A: I like you
B: You taste weird
C: I am fluffy and cute, stop brushing me!

Pedro started licking my BF's hand as he brushed him possibly in an attempt to be let go. 😆 Lots of complaining squeaks alongside with him licking my BF's hand was an amusing sight, though I was afraid he might try nipping my BF, but he thankfully didn't. I guess the brushing triggered him to try grooming in response as a "how do you like it?" thing?

I actually use one of these for my own hair... even though my last perm is down to the frazzled ends! It's made of sandalwood and you get a faint, lovely aroma as you use it. It has wide, smooth teeth and there's no catching or static, and it was about £8 off amazon. I've never tried it on George though!

I don’t know about others but I just cut my Peruvian short. She doesn’t like the brushing, I’m not gonna show her so why stress about it.

I just hope no one judges my skills as a dog groomer based on my ability to cut my piggy :lol!:

Better that than caked in poop and pee! Sheepy (the alpaca who’s hair never stopped growing) had far worse!
Still very gorgeous!

You've done a good job. Unlike the hack job I did on poor Patsy's bum!

She wouldn't let me finish it off so it looked nice! It was her first bum trim after all. Betsy's used to it and lets me finish it off properly.

Still better than before though @Betsy! Fresh and clean!
I’m pretty thankful Luigi and Aliona are short haired, I’d have an absolute nightmare with scissors around that pair of mad ‘uns!
Both been here a while too!

It was a two man job but I managed to trim him today with the help of some carrot! A few kicks to say get off my bum but hopefully he will be a little more manageable!

Would love to help if I was closer! :D
They definitely get used to it after time, Sheepy was terrible at first but used to quite like a brush and a tidy after a good few months here! Especially when he got his cataracts, then the horrible stroke my poor boy, I could get to and scratch the bits he couldn’t! ❤️

This is what is worrying me slightly he is actually getting worse! But hopefully he will get used to it eventually!

How often do you groom him/try!?
My Jasper has got a real issue with his face being touched (ears and nose got nice bites from his past cagemate poor boy), the first few weeks I could hardly get near him but I’ve been getting him used to it gradually and he’s so much better after 7 weeks! I can stroke over both eyes now, even look in his ears if he’s in a good mood! And stroke all over! Loves a fuzzy bum scratch too! :))

Every couple of days I’ll just focus on one bit of him(!), one day top of his head, the next the right side of his face, next the left etc. If he’s too distressed I give him something tasty and give up! Been a really good piggy therapy for him I think after his bullied past, I don’t push it and listen when he wants it to stop!
He loves my human hairbrush so I’ll admit we share sometimes too! XD:D

Just given Fluffy a gentle brush. She seemed happy everywhere, until I got to her back end, when she squeaked a lot! She still put up with it, but I think another bum trim might be due!

I have started trying every other day at the moment, he seems to be better with a comb but still tries to kick me if I go near his back legs or bum! When we first got him we would brush him regularly but it seems as he has got more confident he has become a bit of a diva! I will preserver though!

Luigi is also a massive diva so totally understand! :)) He gets brushed a couple of times a week as he moults like mad, worse than the cat! I get kicks, bites and screams bloody murder sometimes when it’s nail trims or a brush (normally when the food’s stopped!), total diva! :)) Aliona’s brilliant and sits like a little angel with nail trims etc thank god! Jess was a terror for years with those! Piggies! 🙄:))
