Emergency Looking For Advice Please! - Uri / Pneumonia

Update - I went out and got her fave veggies (red peppers and kale) and she is munching away on them :) I just put the bowl of steaming water next to her cage - she seems brighter and was out and about in her cage but that could be me looking for improvement lol! Whilst she's eating beside me, she's vibrating every so often?! Like making her little box move? This is the carry box I usually take her to the Vet in - do you think she's nervous? I thought that it would be a good idea to get her associated with good things whilst in it?

it is great that your girl is obviously feeling better in herself!

Is she just shivering or making burring, rumbly sounds? If it is the first, please keep her warm and snug. Shivering can also be a sign of fear.

Mmm, some rumbles but I'll get her her blanket whilst she eats. She's a spoilt Piggy lol! Thank you everyone for today, I love this group! I'll post what the Vet says tomorrow but I'll be able to sleep tonight knowing she's okay for one more night at least! X

She's in good hands - you are looking after her very well.

Just back from Vets - she is showing signs of pneumonia but Vet also said that she could have some food stuck in the back of her throat seeing as she is passing air through both sides of her chest still. So she's still down there waiting to be examined by Craig. He said that we could try different anti-biotics and see if she responds but that the outlook doesn't look good for her :( she was the worst i've seen her this morning - her breathing quickened up so much and she was just nibbling on some hay half heartedly :( but he says whilst she still has energy, is not in pain and can squeak and shout well he says we can try the anti-biotics if they are needed but that we need to keep the animals welfare of importance and priority. So, I hope that it's a bit of nugget or something lodged and then that's it but...I'm feeling quite helpless :( x

Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry, I hope Craig is able to get back to you soon, I'm also sorry she deteriorated over night. :(

Sending vibes and hoping there's some way she and you can make it through this. X

with the baytril also give her a prio biotic as baytril or any antibioitc can be very hard on their tummies.
One of mine before i rehomed her was on bayrtill for a week then septra and even though a pro biotic was given, ive now got her and have to give her a gut stimulant to keep everything functioning.
These are my first guineas for years and so much has changed so this is a learning curve for me, while unpleasant for GPS its good for me i guess.
Hope your GPs get better soon :)

If Pneumonia is suspected, do you know if the vet is thinking about giving a diuretic? as there is often fluid on the chest with Pneumonia.

I've been given Metacam and a different Antibiotic, tablet form this time (1/8th) twice a day. I'll get the name of it later, it's upstairs and I'm only getting dinner now after today :( Betty was so squirmy when i was trying to give her her Metacam that I actually cried at her and then literally 5 seconds after I started crying she willingly took it. She's still eating but, I just hope she pulls through. There is a shadow in her lung apparently (i had to go to work and my parents had to pick her up so, I'm phoning Vets tomorrow so I can chat to him) which they saw from the chest xrays. This has been such a bad day for a number of reasons but Betty tops it all. I don't know what I'll do if she doesn't make it :( x

Aww keep your chin up- these furballs are sent to try us :-S

Make sure she's warm &cosy-with no draughts or temperature fluctuations.

As Helen has suggested-have a chat with the vet ref a diuretic-this can make a real difference to the recovery rate if given quick enough :)
I have used a few drops of olbas oil on a cloth outside the girls hutch-out of their reach- in the the shed before.
Every time I had a cold one of my past piggies would get one too so she was not affected by the smell but it did help her breathing.

But I wouldn't consider pts at this stage- please get another opinion from a cavy savvy vet asap though.
Members have had good results &recovery from URI's &pneumonia with advice from on here.
Good luck &fingers crossed for a speedy recovery betty (&a hug for u)
The girls &I xx

It is Ronaxan.
Can anyone please give me advice on giving oral meds via syringe? My one is ridiculously squirmy to the point that I feel bad and have to pop her in her cage to chill because she gets so stressed. i've tried wrapping her in a towel, holding her head, on my knee, held against my chest and nothing works. I think she only took them last night because she was weak! Now she's back to her even more squirmy self! X

Erm, it's really perseverance, my boy can be right tricky with some of his, I can be trying for up to ten minutes, I would possibly try the towel thing and firmly, but not harshly hold her head, and then slot the end of the syringe into the side of the mouth and release the yummy medicine! x

That's Doxycycline and is one of the stronger ones. My Nigel was on it when he came to me. I agree with The Furry Godmother, that you could either wrap in a towel or hold your hand firmly over the face so your fingers are either side of the mouth and then slot the syringe in. There is a guide on here, will go find it now.

Thank you! Excellent! Will have to try that on her later dose of meds tonight (gets them twice daily!) some of the meds went all over her :( she is awful! I was thinking about buying a restraining bag too - i just dont want to keep stressing her! She's now tucked underneath my dressing gown i put on and is snoozing lol stressful 5 mins! X

My Frank is a state atm, we've a mix of gripe water, fibreplex, glucosamine... only thing he readily takes is the pain relief. He's being a terror! & He's a mess! Haha! (On top of that his beloved Bert erm, peed all over his face the other day and side... lovely boy!). So don't worry too much about the state she's in, easily cleaned up with a warm flannel :)
It takes practice, it really does, when I first started out and he had to have baytril - last year, didn't have much of a clue, took two of us! Still does sometimes!

I found that when one of my guinea pigs was poorly and he hated his medicine, I used to give him a piece of cucumber which was his favourite and he soon associated his medicine with cucumber and used to look out for it having had his medicine. They soon learn!

I find that if you put the syringe behind the front teeth at the side of the mouth, even though they close their mouth there is a gap they cannot close and that is where you can put the syringe. The secret is to be kind but firm and let them know they must have their medicine. My guinea pig used to love the taste of Metacam, so I also used to give him this first, followed by his antibiotic. It is all down to the individual guinea pig, and what works for them. I had about 2 months of medicine for one or other at one time and you soon get to be expert at it.

Haha! Your poor guinea pig! That's hilarious about his friend peeing on him though xD!
I'll try the favourite food trick! She's still sleeping atm, so cute and smooshy. She ate some Veg about 30mins ago very eagerly which was nice to see.
My other half will be home later so I'll need to enlist him in being Chief Guinea Pig Holder!
Also...random question but Bettys ears are extremely high on her head and are so close together...has anyone seen this before? I'll try and put a pic up...x

Her ears are always like that, this is the only pic i have that it's kind of visable! I've never seen it before and I can't find any pictures or anything! Strange G.Pig she is! X

Beautiful though!
Actually I have seen another pig like that before, maybe there all different? Like humans have different ears?

Hehe I think it makes her extra cute xD! She's just yawned and stretched a few times on me there. Still keeping her nice and toasty. What would you say for how long meds have to be given apart from each other? 6 hours? X

I've made a quick video on how to syringe feed/give medication to a piggy yourself, when its uploaded i will post it in case it helps!

Has she had any previous owners? Once I have seen a piggy with ears like that as he had a cyst where skin had to be removed, and as a consequence his ears ended up higher up and closer together!

Ok... click the image to access the vid. I'm not an expert by any means but I can get meds down some wriggly pigs so hopefully this may be of use to you! Top tips: always keep the syringe pointed towards the opposite cheek so you don't risk them aspirating meds or food, and practice with a syringe of water first so you don't waste meds getting the hang of it! There is always some resistance however good natured the piggy so its a case of tailoring how firm you are with different piggies.
