hope all goes well and look forward to hearing from you.

PS - ive only found this thread, so apologies!

Well, after a visit to the vets this afternoon, it would appear that little Lyle would have spurs on his teeth. he's going back in tomorrow for his teeth sorting. hope all will be ok. It's not too dangerous is it.

good luck at vets tomorrow. will be thinking of your little piggy and you.

Hiya, is he going under anaesthetic? He should be ok.. more and more guineas have surgery with a good recovery rate, my sow had an op in january and she was 6yr old at the time i was worried sick because of her age and she was fine, shes still with me now :)

hopefully his teeth will be good after the op, and if he gets his appetite back up and is a good strong eater you hopefully wont encounter any more probs with the teeth.

Good luck lyle, let us know how you get on!

I wouldn't worry to much (I know that's easy for me to say) but I'm sure he'll be fine. I've had a couple of sows who have had dental work and they were fine afterwards. I would get some critical care from the vets in case his mouth is sore the next day and he doesn't feel like eating much. Hope everything goes well for little Lyle.

He will probably take afew days to recover his normal eating habbits........Always check that he is eating something and keep offering food. Also i agree buy some critical care and this is brilliant food and I'm sure he will love it.
Offer him plenty of grass too cos like mine, he might go off his hay (this is what keeps his teeth from overgrowning).

Good luck.......Also if his cage mate is more greedier. It is worth thinking about separating them so you know exactly how much Lyle is eating. Also he may get blocked up down below, so you might have to help remove his poopies :).

Well, it's 24 mins till we're supposed to give the vets a ring. And we've not been called, so i presume that all has gone ok. They wuld have got in touch if something had not gone right wouldn't they?? :(

Also, his brother Tate is being very quiet. Is this normal when they are seperated from their buddies.

yeah they would have called, i was like that my vets didnt even call me i was worried sick but no news is good news, they would deffo ring you if something had gone wrong/complication etc

What time are you picking him up at?

When my sow had an op, she was a little quiet, but she had some supper (lois eats for england, and she wasnt operated on for her teeth) she was fine the day after :)

Been told to ring up at 4, and i presume we can collect him shortly after. xx>>>xx>>>

Just rung the vets. he's back and apparently ok. got to fetch him at 5. :):):):)

He's back, and suprisingly active. Has taken a few bites of celery as well. So, all is good at the moment. now got to get the wedding out of the way, and stress will be gone....gone.....gone........

Thanks to all for your friendly help and advice. xx xx>>>xx>>>

Thats great! Keep watching and keep record of how much and what he eats he eats (grass and hay will stop his teeth from overgrowing again). If he lost any weight, then weigh him daily.

Congrats with the wedding and all the best for the future! :)

So pleased to hear that everything went well ... I am sure that he will be fighting fit again very soon.

Ta very muchly. x>>

I'm pleased to hear that your piggie is back home snuggled up and having a munch.

Would anyone please advise if it's possible to get Pet insurence for guinea pigs. At £67 a time, it could become expensive.

hiya great news lyle is ok, I'm really happy for you! I know what a worry it is ive had a few pigs operated on!

to be honest you will probably pay out more on insurance than you would with a one off vet bill.. they charge a lot for small animals, best to have a bank account and put a few pounds a week away yourself so you have something to fall back on, and they may not insure you because he already has dental problems and an operation, they might not pay out for it.

congrats on the wedding, all the best for the future!

keep us updated on lyle's progress :)

I agree with spudnik. I think you would end up paying more for the insurance.

Yesterday, when returning fron the vets, he was lively, and ate a lot more than he has been. But since then, he isn't eating much, and is back to being quiet. he's due to go back to vets for a check up on friday evening.(night before wedding - aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh)

Is this normal?

Sometimes they can be a "bit off" for a couple of days after an operation.
Mention it to the vet tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

Tempt him with a little lush green handful of grass and see what happens.

All the best for the wedding!

He's stopped eating again. when we got him back from th vets, he was fine. the injection the vet gave him after the teeth trimming worked, and he was eating again. since then, he's started eating less and less. now, we're having to feed him baby food with a syringe again. He's going back to the vets tomorrow for a check up. But, he's now started making a rhasping sound when he's breathing. Is this something to be worried about?

very worried...........

Mine didn't eat properly until 4 days after his teeth was trimmed. Have you separated him from his friend? Just so you know how much he is eating? I did this with mine and he is really happy as he knows he has rule over the food and can take his time.

Have you brought Critcal care and Bio Lapis (improves appetite)?

Wondering if little Lyle could be in pain - especially as he was eating after the anaesthetic and then not eating a couple of days later when perhaps it was out of his system? Would your vet give him Metacam? Worth a try.

Metacam is a painkiller, its a liquid and you fed one drop a day via a syringe. I gave my guinea it. It might work for your guinea :). best to ask your vet tomorrow :)

will do. He's getting thinner, and makes a rhasping sound when breathing :...

oh poor little guy.. sounds like he could have upper respiratory infection if he is wheezy/raspy deffo mention it to your vet, they might give you some baytril which should hopefully sort it out for him.

Have you told your vet about his breathing? Did your vet listen to his lungs?

He's got an infection, and the vet says there's not a lot of hope in him surviving. But has given us lots of medication to see if it does any good. got to take him back on monday if he survives that long (vets words, not mine.) but we can't because we're in barcelona on our honeymoon. She'll be worrying bout him all week.

Thanks to all for your words of advice and support.
