Maisie Has Cystitis

i'm so confused!

after i posted about the red blood spots coming back... they stopped! there was only two and very tiny and yesterday when o/h went out, i realised that maisie wasn't squeaking at all. so i got paranoid thinking she might not beable to wee at all. so i got her out on the settee and waited for her to wee and when she did she did a big wee (her usual amount) and it was the clearest it has been. she didn't squeak or hunch or anything. fed her some cucumber and waited for her to wee again, and again it was normal, but she did a smallish squeak, but again she urinated easily.

so basically, there has only been a tiny bit of blood just after the vets a week ago, and again yesterday there was just a tiny amount. she didn't have alot of blood to start with to be honest, but the amount now is hardly anything. so that's a good thing and points to these meds working well doesn't it? so maybe she is healing well inside?

but then, she is still a little tender underneath and does still occasionally squeak, and she has dropped a little more weight.

she's very bright today aswell.

so is she gradually healing or is she just being kept stable with these meds? that's what is confusing me.

i have been through this before with chesney - he had a chronic cystitis and sludge, and maisie doesn't seem anywhere near the same as he was.

still waiting for the lab to send the final report back. but i need to see where to go from here because i am totally confused.

rang the vets again and the lab still haven't sent the results through. they said if we don't hear by the time they close then the lab haven't sent them and it will likely not be until monday now.

going off how maisie is though, i am ok to keep her on what meds she's on now, for the weekend. so that puts my mind at rest because i don't know about these meds and what is a safe time for her to be on them. i'm confident that maisie is bright and stable enough to keep things as they are until monday.

i would be panicking a bit now if maisie wasn't right, but she's doing well so hopefully that continues over the weekend.

fingers crossed they do ring back today though with the results.

update for today - not even a spot of blood, minimal squeaking, urine looks healthy, and she has been bright. no idea what is going on! but glad she is well today.

will weigh her again tomorrow morning to see where she is at with that. x

When Maisie recovers I recommend a daily dose (20 or 30mls) of unsweetened organic cranberry juice mixed 40:60 (juice:water) with water.
Mine sucks it from a syringe ! It does (as with humans) seem to stop it recurring

What kind of syringe do you use? Mine will only take about 7mls of liquid from the 1ml syringe (in 0.5ml doses) before she gets bored and wants to go back to cage. That is if she likes the taste. If she doesn't she won't touch the stuff!

maisie is really bright and happy. no blood since those little spots, and yesterday and today she has gained weight. not heard any squeaks so far either. she definitely seems alot better now. think those little spots set her back a bit, but now she's on the mend again.

will be speaking with the vet tomorrow so i'm thinking maybe keep her on these meds for a longer course. i'll check with the vet and see what she says anyway. it would seem a shame if we stopped these to move to another and then she went backwards. although she's not gaining weight like she did on the septrin course so i don't know if that points to them not working as well... but the blood and squeaking has stopped so that is a good thing.

bit confused really about what to do, but i'll see what the vet advises tomorrow. just glad she's bright and happy now. she even did a pop turn this morning (her own take on a popcorn!) x

I would certainly see what the vets says, it sounds very positive that she is beating this infection though. Lots of love to Maisie!

i've written an email to the vet, detailing what has gone on, and my thoughts really. I thought it might be better for her to read it when she's got time and then she can get in touch with us when she has decided what she advises for maisie. just because she hasn't been the one treating her so far, and i know that the notes will be on the file, but i think it's better if i explain in more detail. it's a bit long

but i wanted to get all the info in there.

maisie is still bright and happy. :luv:

Gosh, I hope maisie continues to be well and that the vet gets back too you soon!

You must be so worried!

P.S - i love the photo's of her hiding in the hay too, it's so cute :)

she's bright again today, has gained weight again, and no blood or hunching/straining, but she has done a couple of little squeaks again.

the vet has my email now so is going to read it through and then when the lab results come in, she will either email me back, or phone.

apparantly the lab still haven't sent the full report, so it's possible they might have found something.

the lab did start to get a result so that is why it's taken longer to get the full report back. there is a specific bacteria that is there that shouldn't be, but it does respond well to quite a few antibiotics so we have a choice to try. and the ones she is on now are suitable so she is staying as she is now until i speak to aidan when he gets back next week. she said because maisie is staying stable but still occasionally squeaking, and because she isn't gaining back the weight, it might be that aidan will want to switch to a different one that may be better. or he may decide to extend this course for the next week, to make it a three week course. so i need to speak to him to see what he thinks is best.

she said maisie can stay on the metacam dose aswell and it will be fine. then it will be upto aidan if he wants to take her off that soon or extend that for the whole three weeks aswell.

she did say that because this has been going on for a bit now, that it is possible that something else might be going on because you rarely get this type of infection being this stubborn if there isn't something else - possibly sludge or stones. so she agreed that we are right to go for xrays next if this course doesn't work.

so at least i know what i am doing now, at least until aidan is back.

she also said if i don't feel maisie is right at any point, then i can bring her in and she will check her over. but for now she seems to be doing well.

now i need to order some more meds for her to last the next week.

just to add - maisie is staying a stable weight but not gaining like she did last time. but she is bright within herself and there is still no blood/straining/hunching etc. so she's doing really well, with just the very occasional squeak now.

pleased to report that maisie's occasional squeaking has now stopped completely. this is the third day there has been no symptoms at all. she's still got until the end of the week to finish the three week course, and then we'll see how we go.

all symptoms have now gone, the only issue being that she hasn't gained back the weight she lost, but she is stable within a certain range, which is still healthy, so i guess we'll just have to monitor that closely and see how she goes. but apart from that, she is bright and happy.

I'm so glad Maisie is doing well. This is what I lost Gilbert to and I hate seeing anyone elses piggie with it. :(

:( so sorry about gilbert. my ches had chronic cystitis and sludge at one stage. it was a terrible time. thankfully he got through it, but he had one thing after another health wise bless him. :( hope they're both having fun at the bridge now :luv:

finally some weight progress. she's gained back some of what she lost now. she's up at 992g. another few days left of this course so hopefully she will gain some more. target being 1000g at least. that would be brilliant. really pleased.

it is maisie's last day of this course of meds today. she is keeping stable within a higher range of weight now, but she hasn't gained back all of what she lost. hopefully she will over time.

i'm quite nervous but she seems happy and well with no symptoms at all for a while now so fingers crossed.

it's been over three weeks and now maisie has started squeaking occasionally again. better get those xrays booked :(

Oh no! Good luck little one.

thank you. i'm so nervous. but at least if she's having xrays, we can get her cysts checked, and her arthritis ankle aswell. just a full check over really. she's never had anything like this so i'm so worried.
