I have recently required a male guinea pig. He was from a family that dropped him and did not talke proper care of him. He is not eating or drinking much other than veggie (hand fed). His bottom/ privates are looking a bit swollen. Any idea suggestions of what’s wrong.
Ps I have another male piggie that has never done this.

Hi and welcome!

Please have your guinea pig vet checked, as we always recommend with any new guinea pigs, especially neglected private intakes. It can be impaction, but it can also be an infection.

I have started him on veg and hay( which he has never had). His bum seems to be cleaner and not as swollen but I am taking him to the vet. Is there any things You can recommend for a very under weight piggy. My current pig (white) is a little puggy but I put two picture so you can see how underweight he is. You can feel bones

Hi! Just put him on a good diet; hay should make 80% or more of the daily food intake. Be careful with introducing veg if his digestive system is not used to it at first. Introduce just one new variety with every meal to give his guts a chance; stop asap if he develops diarrhea or bloat.

Once he is used to veg, you can feed a bit more carrot and sweetcorn than we normally recommend, but the more hay he eats, especially at first to help get on top of the impaction, the better! Once he is well, the weight should come prety much on by itself to be honest.
A diet without hay can cause impaction in boars. :(

Please also observe a quarantining period before you let your old boar meet the new one through the bars.
We have got extensive bonding information at the top of our behaviour section or if you'd rather use the guide shortcut on the top bar. Make sure that your new boar is well in himself first.

Hello and welcome.
Good for you taking in a neglected piggy.
He’s a very lucky boy.
Great advice already given.
Hope to hear more about your boy soon

Good on you for giving him a home! He is definitely very thin and those nails need a good trim, poor soul!

He went to the vet today. Underweight (got critical care) and missing two molars other than that he’s in better shape then we thought. Thank you to everyone who replied ❤️❤️

Well done for taking in a neglected piggy. He will soon be well again under your loving care.

Update: JJ has gained weight and you can’t feel his bones anymore. He now is very vocal. I need advice on how to make him not so nervous all the time. I believe that the reason he squeaks so loud and high pitched is because he was in a abusive home. If anything in his environment changes he squeaks. If I move or turn a light on he becomes very loud and vocal. Please give me so tips on how to help him.

It sounds as he will require all your love and patience so that he becomes more relaxed.
Seems like you’re doing an amazing job with him so far.
He’s a lucky piggy

Have a look on YouTube as to whether it is a wheek he is doing or squealing. Once you've heard them the difference is easy to see. I took in a poor young piggy who had only been handled for medicating and she spent so much time literally screaming anytime I went near her. She still starts to scream when something's taken too long like nail clipping but overall she's a lot calmer and joins in the wheeking at dinner time now but it has been a year. Just persevere, follow a routine, handle regularly for short periods increasing over time and you'll get there. I find it so much more rewarding when a neglected and mistrustful piggy finally let's you in and trusts you

It depends on what the squeak is he's making but if he's nervous only time will help him heal his nerves. Talking softly to him whenever you're near and constantly helps to soothe them in my experience. I just spoke utter rubbish to my new pigs, telling them about my day or what ever tat I had been watching on telly recently :))

It sounds like he's landed on his paws with you though! Is he bonded with your white piggy? :)

I found them to be invaluable when my piggies were new. The most important one for me was talking to them as I was approaching the hutch or the run so that they knew something was going to happen. If your piggie doesn't like you suddenly turning on the light, tell him you are going to turn on the light, he won't understand but at least he will know that you are coming! Use a different cadence in your voice for the different things that you do. Piggies respond and understand these better. I have a silly voice for veg time or "dindins" and different silly voice for "breakfast time" and a singsong voice for "cuddletime" that way they know what is going to happen. They soon learnt what "dindins" meant!
