Whatever that is, the vet needs to see it ASAP. Please do not wait.

Diagnosing anything on the internet or by photo is not something the forum members can do - we can provide advice and support once you have a vet's diagnosis.

Please, please take your guinea pig to the vet!

Suzy

we've taken him to the vets a couple of times and all they do is give him antibiotics and cream and it doesnt do anything.

Where are you based? I seriously think you may need a new vet. Can you give the name of the medications you were prescribed - that is one of the nastiest wounds I have seen and I'm very concerned for your piggy. Hopefully there is a more cavy savvy vet that can be recommended to you once we know which area you live in.

Suzy

that looks terrible! I would of found a different vet a long time ago to let it get to that state!

I definatley think you need a second opinion from a cavy savy vet, if you can tell us where you are in the country maybe someone on here can recommend a vet. But your poor guinea needs to be seen asap, he must be in such discomfort with that open wound, and it is suseptable to infection too.

That looks really serious, almost looks like flystrike, * definately need to change vets, never seen a wound as bad as that, poor piggie.:(:(

I'm sorry but how could you just let that get like that?! When it is clear whatever your apparently blind and stupid and I actually think quite neglegent vet is an idiot! You don't need to be cavy savvy to see there is a ginormous great gap in that poor piggies skin!

Get to any other vet ASAP, your poor guinea pig.

Hi Karen

That is such a nasty wound. How long has it been there?

If you tell us what area you are in then someone can point you in the right direction for a different vet - if yours has been there twice and nothing is getting better then they really don't know their stuff. Your piggy must be in pain poor thing.

It's not normal to have such a nasty wound for anything like mites or fungal, it can get like that but only in rare cases and the piggy needs the correct treatment in order to feel better, sadly your pig isn't getting that from your current vet.

Poor thing. :(

thanks for all the response

i do not feel i have neglected the guinea pig as i have been trying lots of things after visiting a very good pet shop taoday and showing them a picture i am now treating with spot on treatment and antibacterial powder. although it does look painful and looks like the piggy is in discomfort he seems quite happy eating all his food and drinking ok and loves running round the garden.
lets just hope this treatment helps i was just hoping someone else would of seen something like it and could recommend a treatment.

Is the person you saw at the petshop a qualified vet.

He must be in so much pain

I'm having a problem believing that you are the owner of this guinea pig, you have not given your location so that another vet could be recommended, nor have you named the meds given by the vet previously. A petshop is no vet. They are not qualified to diagnose anything.

Sorry but to let a guinea pig wander about with what is basically an open wound is neglect. Would you let a kid walk about like that? Or would you rush it to A&E? I would be thoroughly ashamed of myself and be threatening my vet with reporting them to the RCVS/the governing body

Spot on will do nothing to heal that, spot on is just an anti mite/parasite thing and if you got it from a pet shop chances are its just the rubbish Beapher stuff, not xeno.

PLEASE tell us where you are so we can recommend a decent vet, and make an appointment for first thing tomorrow.

Piggies can look great til ten minutes before they die - they are prey animals, they are meant to do so as signs of weakness mean predators will pick them off.

I can't imagine why you haven't found another vet.

That picture brought a tear to my eye.

i live in herefordshire i cant give you the name of medication perscribed as i cant remember it.

Do you not have the box or anything.

He needs to see a cavvy savvy vet asap. I have to agree with others to let an animal get that bad is neglect.

This is quite frankly awful.

I have NEVER seen a wound quite so horrific as this on a guinea pig that (you claim) has already seen 2 vets. (Actually I have seen wounds like this - but on laboratory animals that have been deliberately infected with tropical diseases that eat away the skin!)

So, whatever the "alleged vets" gave you hasn;t worked and the piggie is now in a serious state of illness that is life threatening. Going to a pet shop for additional medication is NOT the answer.

Your guinea pig has a massive open wound....and needs specialist veterinary surgical care to enable it to heal...(let alone diagnosing and treating the problem that caused this...and has already been stated on this forum, you will not get any of us to try and diagnose this type of condition, your piggie needs a cavie savv vet)

If you do not seek proper vet care you will be in breach of the Animal Welfare Act.....and the forum is not stupid enough to try and diagnose and prescribe for this "horrific" case that would mean it also is in contravention . I'm sorry to be so bald about this...but you need to know...and your need a good vet fast.

There is only one way forwards (if you are not posting this for a wind-up...and I am giving you the benefit of the doubt)....and that is to post your town and we will identify a cavy savvy vet for you who will be able to give your poor suffering guinea pig the proper treatment.

Please do NOT delay.....post tomorrow morning at the latest.......as transport may be able to be arranged if you don;t drive but it needs to be co-ordinated with your availability and the new vets availbility over a weekend
You Will have to cover the vets costs...but not the transport....

hereford.
i really dont think he is in as much pain as you all think. he has had this for over a year but he is eating ok and drinking ok and happy to be handled if he was off his food/ drink or deteriating in any other way of course he would be taken to vets asap but as i have gone twice before and he seems ok otherwise i had no reason to think anything else i am not a bad person and cant believe the negative response i am getting.

You have got to be joking, over a year! And you don't understand the negative response!

You posted a pic of an animal with a huge wound, you obviously haven't done enough to get the poor animal treated so is it any wonder we are all being negative. And how can he not be in pain, my god are you being serious!

why would anyone think that i have posted this as a sick joke!

i didnt want people to diagnose it i was just wondering if anyone had had the same problem with one of there pigs I'm sorry for asking!

If you really can't see that there is anything wrong with him then I really don't think he should be in your care..

This thread is really winding me up in the fact that you could be so naive in thinking that he is fine...

People have offered to help with transport yet your still refusing to take him to a vet..you actually sicken me

if you go to the vets and they say there isnt a problem that its not life threating and other than it not looking very nice the pig is in good health why would i question expert advise?

Ok you must be having a laugh now, as a guinea pig with a wound like that for over a year would surely be dead?! Never heard of septiceamia or tentenus kicking in (excuse spelling)

Your vet is, I am sorry, an idiot and useless if he can look at that and go 'oh that's not serious'. I also suggest he gets his eyes tested.

Yes, some people have, and you know what, they went to a decent vet and got it sorted out. They didn't go 'oh the guinea pig is fine really, what with a nice bloody wound on its back!'

I'm sorry but even a vet that didn't have much knowledge on guinea pigs would know yours does have a problem. I'm not a vet and even I can see that!

You've refused to take him to another vet. If you had wound like that for a year would you of not seen a different doctor!?

his health was checked over and given a clean bill of health and if he wasnt well he wouldnt be eating and drinking and running around very happily!
