Maple has a very swollen and sore foot

:hug: it's hard when your much loved piggie/pet is unwell and doesn't get better quickly despite your best efforts; other added stresses don't help either.
Azithromycin I know is the antibiotic often recommended for abscesses by TEAS so maybe it would be good for Maple' pus-y wound too. My Zebedee had it (for URI) when Baytril didn't work and he seemed to tolerate it better, but I have heard here of some that didn't tolerate it so well so I guess it depends on the individual piggy somewhat ...

I'm sorry Maple is unwell.trying to study whilst having a poorly piggie is hard.i studied full time whilst being a fulltime nurse.it is very difficult,but well worth the rewards when you achieve your goals.

It's a brilliant antibiotic and generally very much better tolerated than baytril!
 
Sorry for twining last night all, things always seem worse in the wee hours. I should be happy for a pig that is cooperative with syringe feed!

The vet said Maple's tummy felt lovely, loose, and not uncomfortable, though she did agree it was odd that she is eating practically all of her own poos, caecotrophs or not. Based on the fact that her tummy is clearly off if not frankly bloated, and that the foot is still more hot and swollen than we would like she has switched me to sulfatrim. Fingers crossed it both works and Maple tolerates it a little better, otherwise I'll just ask her straight out for azithromycin on Friday when I'm booked in again to see her . :blink:
 
I'm so sorry you are feeling low. Having poorly piggies is incredibly draining. Throw studying into the mix and it must be 10x worse. Hope you are feeling better today, have had some rest and that Maple gets better really quickly.

This is a very good place to vent frustrations when we have sick piggies and are worried and tired.
It can feel a bit too much, especially when the rest of life doesn’t stop.

We can offer lots of support and an understanding place to let it all out.

Not much to update I'm afraid, Maple's foot swelling might have gone down a tiny bit but she has a huge scab wrapping round her foot which I do not want to remove! She is definitely putting more weight on that foot though.

Still syringe feeding, though lowered her from 4 12ml feeds to 3 yesterday and she kept her weight up this morning so that's a bonus. She seems more willing to eat hay if it's in front of her, but only if it's the sort she really likes -- the horrible stalky tough bits from timothy! Still absolutely addicted to brown cardboard so I let her have a little bit at the end of a feed as a treat (literally a mouthful or two, she rips it out my hand like it's the most delicious coriander ever). Hoping her food preferences will expand as her guts sort themselves out. Her poos (when she isn't eating them) are very good actually, so I'm a bit confused about her tummy.

She's not really keen to forage for hay in the cage herself, even if it's on the ground for her to snuffle through. Hopefully that will come with time. She's a very (VERY) sedentary pig, but the rescue said that isn't unusual for her at all, she likes to take the slow lane for sure.

She's knocked her scab off :blink:. Taking a bit of a risk leaving the wound open to the air but it seems to be only the original pus-hole (sorry :vom:) and a tiny scrape wound, both of which are granulating nicely :drool:. All those years of podiatry research are coming in handy now...

She's a little more active around the cage this evening, seems the others going nuts for their dinner got her going too :yahoo:
