Meet Edamame šŸ˜

He is so innocent, I almost feel bad! If only he knew it means he might have some girlfriends in the future

I’ve been packing up all their stuff ready to leave in the morning. The house is going to be weirdly quiet next week. Tofu is doing better which makes me happy! I hate leaving him even when he’s well

Meet Edamame (Ed or Eddie for short), Tofu’s new friend - he’s only three weeks old and he’s gorgeous!

My 4yo boy Tofu went rescue dating after we lost Patches, as I didn’t want to neuter him unless it was a last resort, considering his health problems. The timing worked out well - the rescue had just taken in several pregnant females and there were a few baby boys coming up to separating age. Which means Ed was taken straight from his mum to bond with Tofu, no time alone or bouncing around different adults

Tofu went to the rescue on Saturday, bonding was done on Sunday and by all accounts went about as smoothly as it could have!

I’ve literally just got them home now, so I’m trying to let them be - Tofu is relaxed but Edamame is understandably a bit spooked. He had a zoom around the cage and then dove into a hay pile safely under the blanket

Here’s the pictures I’ve managed to get so far. I can’t believe the size difference! Never seen a piggie so young before and I am totally in love 🄰

Hi, edamame, you’re so cute, don’t worry tofu will be a great roommate. I just got a pair of piggies and they fight but also love each other immensely!

Today did not exactly go to plan

I packed up all Tofu's meds and the piggie bits to send the boys off for Ed's neuter. Picked up Tofu for his morning syringe feed, found him covered in blood

Called the rescue to say we'd be late/maybe have to cancel, rushed Tofu to the vet - he's booked in for scans tomorrow to investigate but there wasn't an obvious source of the blood. Possibly urine, but his bladder/pee has been fine, no signs of infection or stone, and his pain is still focused around his intestines. He gained weight this morning! God knows what's going on

I had no idea what to do about Ed's neuter - didn't want to separate them, but didn't want to delay Ed's neuter in case it's bad news with Tofu. Chatted with OH and the rescue and we ended up deciding to send Ed on his own, but have him come home sooner so I can do the post-op care from here when he and Tofu are together again. I know I'll need to reintroduce on neutral territory and there's a possibility they'll fall out. They have a good bond so I hope it won't be too difficult, but if they won't go back then they'll be side by side at least

Ed is at the rescue now ready for his neuter tomorrow and will be coming back home on Friday, once the rescue is happy he's eating after the anaesthetic. Tofu is also going under anaesthetic for his scans tomorrow. Far from ideal, but it was the best we could do given the circumstances

Tofu's had a couple more episodes of mystery blood since Eddie left. He seems so well in himself, but there's clearly something going on :(

How scary for you! Hope Tofu is OK and that Ed is doing alright too!

Oh no I hope Tofu will be ok
I’m sure Ed will be ok and well looked after
You can concentrate on Tofu

Thank you ā˜ŗļø He’s had his critical care quite happily, and he’s coping alright without Eddie. I am anxious about tomorrow but glad the scans will maybe give us some answers. Prepared for the worst, hoping it’ll be something treatable - but given his age and condition I’m not going to put him through anything too invasive

He’s getting lots of extra cuddles tonight ā¤ļø

Oh no. I hope they are both ok and soon reunited. I hope whatever is going on with Tofu is easily fixed šŸ¤žšŸ»

Thank you. It was a horrible shock to find Tofu like that yesterday - he didn’t seem bothered in the slightest but I was!

He’s at the vet now for scans, I should get a call soon. Eddie will also be at the vet but I won’t hear about him until tomorrow as he’ll be staying overnight

Cannot believe their timing šŸ˜… going to split the cage ready for them to be side by side for a bit while Tofu is at the vet today

Tofu’s back home ā¤ļø he has a 1cm bladder stone. I talked about it more in his other thread but we’re taking some time to decide what the best thing for him is

No word about Eddie yet. I am keen to get him home on Friday

Tofu is eating after the sedation for his scans, he’s chilling out in a massive hay pile now and got lots of pea flakes for being a brave boy

Oh no poor dear Tofu
I'm glad he’s enjoying his supper 🄰

The sedation has knocked him a bit

He did eat a little at the vet (and he pooped, which is why they let him come home), but he’s not eating very much and he had a bunch of funky poops. He’s straining more as well :(

I gave him a good clean and wipe down, coaxed a bit of critical care into him, and he tucked into his veggies with his usual gusto. Hopefully he picks up tomorrow but it has made me very reluctant to put him through any kind of anaesthetic again

The anaesthesia will take a while to work it's way out of his system. When The Ever Beautiful Betsy had an emergency spay during Lockdown, the first night she was as high as a kite and was definitely tripping! (You could see it in her eyes). She didn't want any food the night of her spay and I syringe fed a reluctant Betsy and she had stringy poops which reflected the time she hadn't eaten for the operation. The next day it was speed syringe feed. I've never syringe fed a piggy so fast! She had 25ml in about 5 minutes!

With Tofu, he's probably still dopey from the anaesthetic. His funky poops are a reflection of the time he wasn't eating during his procedure. The fact he tucked into his veggies is a good sign. Keep hay and water within reach. Hopefully tomorrow he will be back to normal but it may take a couple of days.

I hope little Edamame is OK after his plum fairy visit šŸ’āœ‚ļøšŸ§šā€ā™‚ļø

Mourne forgot how his mouth worked after anaesthetic. First you had to put the food really close to his mouth, then he started trying to pick it up to eat it and kept throwing it instead and then looking really confused, like he'd no idea what went wrong or why, lol.

Mind you he felt well enough that I knew he hated anything related to syringes - Baytril, Metacam, syringe feed, and any sort of fruit I tried the syringe feed on to see if that would be more palatable. Apparently not. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

Piggies are silly after anaesthesia aren’t they! I remember with Patches after his mammary tumour removal it took a few days for him to really come around and he had funky poops for the first 24 hours before bouncing back. He also did the launching veggies across the cage and looking confused šŸ˜‚ He was absolutely fine after his scan sedation though

Tofu only had light sedation for a scan, not full anaesthesia yesterday, which is why I’m worried. He wasn’t even under for the full 30 minutes. The vet had a very long chat with me about concerns with stone surgery removal and him coming around - looking at how uncomfortable he is after the scan sedation, I just don’t know if it’s a good idea to risk it. Though I’m sure not having Eddie here isn’t helping him (or me!), so hopefully he perks up when he comes back tomorrow

Unsurprisingly, his weight is down today. But his pain is well managed and we’ve upped his meds again. The x ray also showed the arthritis we knew about, especially in his knees, the vet said they did not look very comfortable bless him. It’s impressive heā€˜s still climbing the bars and pottering about his cage ā¤ļø

I should hear about Eddie later today. Can’t wait to have him home

My Rosie (5+) doesn't handle light sedation either. She's very uncomfortable and confused in her body, only calms down when I sit with her and pet her. Took a while for it to pass, too.

Strangely from anesthesia she recovered very well. We had to remove an angry 8mm bladder stone earlier this year, it had eaten itself into her bladder wall.

Holding you in my thoughts ā¤ļø

Ouch !
That’s a big stone. Poor boy.
I will check your other thread.

Hope Edamame is ok and gets home soon.

What time is he due back today? šŸ’
He should be back at the rescue by now - the neuter was done yesterday and he’d have been kept overnight at the vet. I am impatiently refreshing my email for news haha - she’ll probably get back to me early evening and then Eddie can come home tomorrow afternoon, all being well. She’d normally keep him a bit longer but she agreed to let me do post-op care from here as Tofu had to stay behind

Tofu is still a bit out of it, poor little man, but he’s eaten some hay & readigrass and I’m going to do some more critical care soon. I’m sure he’s missing Eddie - he keeps going up to the cage divider ā¤ļø maybe he’ll complain less about teenage antics once Ed’s back haha

I haven't been on the forum for a few days and have just come on again specially to check on Edamame and you @JaseChase to see how you're doing without your boys.
I’m sorry to hear everything turned out a bit different than planned... Healing vibes to Edamame and hoping for a stone-dissolving fairy for Tofu.

Thank you so much, that really means a lot. The community on here is just lovely ā˜ŗļø

Good news: Eddie is awake and eating veggies! The rescue lady thinks he should be fine to come home tomorrow afternoon as long as he’s still doing well in the morning

It’ll be so good to have him home. Tofu will be pleased
