Member Gallery: C&C cages/homemade cages

Looks like the wooden cage is still some way away so I have added a few centimeters to the cage by putting an ikea table top 150 x 75 and an offcut of 75 x 40cm. I am so happy with it.

Here are my two cage upgrades, first one was a stacked c&c cage with 35x35 cm grids both levels being 2x4s with lofts. I sewed many of the liners myself with the guide found here! There were two bonded boars on both levels, but I'd recommend this to sows rather than boars as it is a bit of a thight fit for two big boar-personalities. I really recommend making a lid for a stacked cage, as at least my piggies love jumping and don't realize that there's nothing to catch them if they jump out 🙈
+ Takes less space
+ The brothers who hate each other don't even know they're in the same room :))
+ My 7 year old piggies back legs got into better shape when he got a loft as running up and down the ramp requires some muscles!
- I at least needed to always have some padding under my knees while cleaning the bottom cage as it is a tiiiiny bit uncomfortable...
- Lower level is more difficult to reach

The interior had to be upgraded really quickly as the piggies in the lower level kept shooting their wood shavings all over the house when the litter box was at the side of the cage and I also wanted to make haybags as my piggies love peeing in their hay.

This layout worked really well for us, however the upper level piggies had had a slightly unstable bond from the start and it ended up with us separating them when we noticed signs of bullying. This lead to us expanding the bottom cage into a 3x4 which we split in the middle so that it was two 2x3s. The plan is to expand the cage at some point, but at the moment the piggies are really content with this setup and as they're only 1-2 yrs old they especially appreciate the added lofts. I often see them getting the zoomies and running up and down the ramp like crazy!

- The downside with this setup is that I always have to begin with cleaning one of the bottom cages as I otherwise can't reach to clean the top cage.
+ A bonus is that you can store things you need often on the top of the cage, I have pee-pads and their treats for training there!
+ The separated piggies love sleeping on the houses in the back next to each other

My tip is to put the ramp slightly away from the side of the cage so that the piggies can run around it, it prevents the piggies getting cornered and gives more oppurtunities for zoomies :yahoo:
