Missing Pig!

Mabel seems to be feeling better today. She's moving about a lot more but doesn't seem to be able to manage the ramp in the hutch. Will that come with time or do you think I've a permanently disabled piggy?

Omg that's just the best news! I was expecting the worse! That's made my week and I can imagine how you must feel. What a little cutie! I suspect she is a bit battered and bruised, I am sure in a few days she will be fine, it takes a while for any bruising to go down and she is probably still very physically tired. X

Give her time to heal and keep her in a place where she is as comfy and as little stressed as possible.

I'm really glad that this had a happy ending. She should hopefully be back to her old self in a week or two, hopefully wiser too! :) x

I'm so so glad you found her! Hope she recovers completely

Mabel update: two weeks on almost, and the trauma has subsided. We've had a week off the antibiotics almost but her wound started to go a funny colour. Checked her tonight and part of the scab was coming off. So I pulled it, and out popped the most huge and disgusting abscess I've ever seen. It was vile and stunk!

Anyway, I've decided to put her back on the baytril and see how she goes. Hetty has just had an abscess on her chin so I'm pretty au fait on that front.

Poor lovey. She must feel so much better now it's out!

Poor thing . Are you going to get the wound checked by a vet? I remember when Max had an abscess, I had to irrigate the wound to help it heal from the wound bed.

That sounds painful bless her, did the vet tell you to keep the wound open with your other pig and that it had to be flushed? Also Baytril is not the most effective antibiotic for abscesses, a lot of vets have started to prescribe Zithromax instead. Would your vet consider a change in antibiotic?

Mabel passed away. She suddenly went downhill yesterday and I managed to get her an emergency vet appointment as the abscess had come back. But she was so poorly that she died after the vet administered the anaesthetic before surgery. He said there was nothing more I could have done (he's an exotics specialist) but I feel as though it's all my fault.

My three other pigs are all healthy and happy but Mabel was special. She was one of my original pair of pigs (Sylvia died last year) and a gift from my boyfriend. I just feel so lost and wish I could have saved her.

Thank you for all your kind wishes and support over the last few weeks. It's good to know there's people out there who love their pigs as much as I love mine. I'm sorry if I don't reply to any more messages on here for now but it's just too hard. They're like my children and I can't believe this has happened to us.

I'm so sorry to hear this but, please don't blame yourself. You did everything you could for her. I'm afraid it's because we love them so much that it is painful when they go. Rest in peace poor Mabel

I am so sorry, i've literally just seen this thread. I know its probably not much of a comfort but at least you got her home and gave her everything she needed, most importantly love in her final days. She wasnt alone. I am so sorry and dont ever feel like it was your fault- you did the best you could and thats all we can ever do x

Oh no! I'm sorry I'm late in seeing this thread, what an awful thing to happen, especially after things looked positive a while ago. Please be kind to yourself, you did everything you could for her.
