i have 2 guinea pigs and i just noticed that one of them keeps scratching his nose but he still eats (even started eating more) and i don’t have much experience with guinea pigs so i’m not well at noticing signs of mites or lice can anyone give me anything to look out for i haven’t noticed anything else that would make me think he has them but just let me know because i don’t want to waste $130 to bring them both in for a checkup if they don’t even have them

Mites cannot be seen with the naked eye. You can see evidence of them - bald patches of fur, excessive scratching, black specs attached to the hairs at the back end of the piggy (these are the mite egg casings).
Lice are pale crawling creatures which you can see on your piggy.

Unfortunately we cannot know why he is excessively scratching just his nose and we can only advise you to see a vet so your piggy can have a hands on vet check for diagnosis - this could be anything from just normal cleaning of his nose to something stuck inside his nose which is irritating him to the start of a skin condition.

Is it just his nose he is scratching? Or his whole body. Is his nose red? Or has hair loss? Or scabs? I’m just asking because they “wash” their noses and faces a lot. It’s really sweet. Maybe he’s doing that? But if he’s scratching all over have them checked over at the vets. It’s very easy to treat mites and lice and not too expensive. Good luck.

i also noticed that he frequently scratches the back of his head too i dont really know how to explain it, but it could be him just washing his nose or because i had to get a different brand of bedding and hes not used to it but i guess i can find out tomorrow bc i’m bringing them both to the vet just for a checkup and grooming so hopefully they’re okay and thank you!
