I think she will have to be on her own for 24hours after any surgery to make sure she is eating and poohing ok. After that she should be fine to go back in with both of her friends. I just meant to keep her with Emma if Edward was being too pesky!
 
Hopefully you will get some answers Claire, once you know what you are dealing with it will be easier. Remember she is a young healthy piggy xx
 
Thank you @pig in the city I'm now also stressing about her diabetes and whether this bleeding could be down to that or would that be unlikely?

Is Septrin safe to give diabetic piggies? I am hearing mixed reviews over this and am seriously confused as I always assumed Septrin was sugar free :(

The last time Ellen had Septrin, she didn't have glucose in her urine and she doesn't have glucose in her urine now either x
 
If Septrin didn't cause an upset with her diabetes last time you should be safe to use again should the vet prescribe some. The fact she doesn't have any glucose in it atm either suggest her diabetes is stable currently.

Hopefully you get some answers soon xx

Do you know if Septrin is sugar free? Ellen also eats Harringtons nuggets which I am also hearing conflicting advise but she has been fine with the Harringtons since she came to me last May x

That's lovely. Like @Adelle said, they do have a sense when one of them isn't well.

Fingers crossed that it goes well at the vets. It's so awful when they are ill :hug:

Not sure, if you google the brand name you should fine the ingredients online. The vet also gives you meds out of a larger bottle so they can confirm if it's sugar free by reading the original bottle.

I am currently feeding my IC pig harringtons after being on a pellet free diet for around 4 months (her bladder is severely damaged so we had to cover all bases). Before that I tried so many expensive grain free low calcium pellets but they all aggravated her bladder.

We are currently on week 3 of the harringtons and crunchie is doing excellent with a very Unreactive bladder. I'm very pleased with the lack of bladder trigger ingredients in them but not sure about sugar I'm afraid x

Septrin just has artificial sweeteners in it. I doubt that the diabetes would trigger the bleeding Claire, especially if she is currently not showing sugar in her urine. If sugars are high it can trigger infections, but this is not the case with Ellen.
Lets see what the tests show, making yourself ill with worry is going to change anything, so deep breaths and focus on the positive which is that she is a young healthy piggy. Hang in there xx
 
Hi everyone. Just to update that Ellen's ultrasound and X-rays all came back perfectly normal! Her womb, bladder, kidneys etc are all fine and there are no ovarian cysts or bladder stones. Ellen was such a good girl that she even had a conscious X-ray.

She has been monitored all day and only lost one droplet of blood. I'm to keep her on antibiotics for another two weeks just as a precaution. The blood is still a mystery so I don't know what to think now?

If in two weeks time she is still losing blood, my vet will send off a urine sample just to double check for an infection even though there is nothing showing on the dip stick. It's just to rule it out I guess.

My vet did say that it's possible she could have a small internal injury either caused by Edward or a hay poke but it's impossible to tell. My mum has noticed though that the blood loss has reduced so hopefully she is on the mend from whatever it is.

The piggies are going to stay at my mum and dad's for another week or so just whilst I get my head together but I am so relieved but still worried that we don't know where it's coming from

It could be from the rectum from bleeding somewhere in the guts, especially if bladder and uterus have been cleared.

Fudge has had this twice, but has diarrhoea with it and was diagnosed as an inflammatory gut issue, different to Ellen's symptoms.

It is extremely difficult to diagnose a gut issue as you can't see much on X-ray or scan unless it's something massive and nasty.

Has she eaten any foreign material lately?

If the bleeding continues id suggest trialong a course of Zantac/ranitidine which will help protect the guts and stomach from damage and bleeding.

So glad the scan was ok Claire. So glad she is improving. Hopefully its just one of those things. I have had piggies that have had a vaginal bleed who have gone on eventually to develop ovarian cysts, mind you they are very common anyway. X

Thank you for this. I did wonder if the blood could be coming from her rectum as it's hard to tell. My vet did say that if it was bleeding from the guts, she would expect to see abnormal poos / diarrhoea hence why she asked me to separate so I could monitor her poos. Is there a way to tell if it is coming from her rectum?

As far as I am aware she hasn't eaten any foreign material. If she has, could that be the cause and what would I do? Would it have shown up on the X-ray?

I will mention all this to my vet when we go in two weeks time unless of course Ellen becomes unwell before then x

Thank you Barbara. I'm still panicking about her but am glad she doesn't need any surgery at this present time. I guess if she develops ovarian cysts in the future, I will worry about it then.

As I am a wimp, the piggies have their nails trimmed at the vets and Lindsay always examines them at the same time so would hopefully notice any changes.

She was pretty certain that there wasn't anything nasty going on this time round but at least the scan and X-ray have given me peace of mind x

You can't always see it on X-ray depending on the material that's been eaten. As long as she's still pooing normally then you needn't worry about a blockage. If the bleeding continues I would run it past your vet as an option.

Because piggies bits are all so close together it really is difficult to tell where it's coming from, they where back and forth between a diagnosis of the uterus or rectum with fudge. A clear scan of the uterus and bladder would obviously eliminate them though which you have done. It wasn't as simple as that with fudge as they have never been able to find her uterus on ultrasound.. She is difficult to scan as she has a lot of excess tissue in her abdomen from old age and circulatory problems.

Keep in touch with the vet and don't hesitate to take her back if there's any deterioration or no improvement x
 
Sorry I've just caught up with this thread. Glad Ellen got on ok earlier- still wishing her a speedy recovery.

I know my Ellie had lots of uti's. That would clear up with antibiotics then, would appear again a week or so later.
After many uti's sometimes with very heavy bleeding often when she pooped as opposed wee'd. It turned out on conscious ultrasound that she had a walnut sized lump /ovarian cyst for which she had hcg hormone injections for (6yrs old too old/risky for my vet to spay) but think she only had one more bleed afterwards &went on until the ripe old age of 8.

Think I would keep ovarian cysts in the back of my mind if it keeps reoccurring. Hopefully its something easily sorted :nod:

Thank you. I will of course take her back to the vet sooner if she becomes unwell but I will definitely discuss the possibility with my vet at Ellen's next appointment x

Thank you. Thankfully Ellen's ultrasound showed she doesn't have ovarian cysts but it's definitely something to think about in the future x
