Inhave 4 boars in 2 pairs. My oldest two are called Jamie and Soarky and are 5 nearly 6. Unfortunately around a year ago, Jamie lost over 250g and had to be out under anesthetic so that they could file his teeth. He has gained weight since then and everything has been fine. Today for the weekly weigh-ins, I picked up Sparky and could immediately tell that he was much lighter than usual. He has lost 120g. I checked his teeth and they are on a diagonal. He has been eating as normal and doesnt seem to be in pain but neither was Jamie when he was having dental issues. I'm hoping that he will not lose more weight like Jamie. I have of course made a vet appointment for as soon as possible, and will weigh him daily. Might start with some critical care feed. Does anybody know if there is anything that can be done to prevent this from happening to the teeth bevause I am so scared that this has now happened to Sparky and I really dont want to have to go through everything with Sparky that we went through with Jamie. And certainly wouldnt want it to happen with my other 2 boys aswell. Is there a chance that it couldn't be the teeth? I'm so scared for Sparky.

The diagonal incisors does suggest a tooth issue!

Eating tons of hay is the best and pretty much only way to keep teeth in good order, which I'm sure you are already providing. Quite often there can be a genetic link, also it can just be bad luck unfortunately.

Hopefully it wil just be a bit of corrective dental work and he won't need any further work.

I'd start syringe feeding now, and weighing daily, once a day at the same time.

Fingers crossed 🤞

I am very sorry. Are Jamie and Sparky related? Teeth problems can sadly be hereditary.

Apart from providing your guinea pigs with good quality hay 24:7 there isn’t much that can prevent teeth problems from occurring and it sounds like you’ve been unlucky.

Please do weigh Sparky daily and top him up with critical care. It’s good you have him a vet appointment booked x

Thank you both so much. When we rescued them they were suspected to be brothers so there could be that genetic link. I'll definitely start with the critical care. His vet appointment is soon so fingers crossed he will be okay!

I had a boy that lost a lot of weight and had wonky front teeth. He had an abscess brewing but we didn’t know that the time so he had a very small dental at the vets and they noticed the abscess. Good luck at the vets. Hopefully it will be easily sorted out.

Definitely start syringe feeding.

Hi,
Hope everything went well at the vet appointment today.

Please give this dental RIFE frequency a go for Sparky, it is for teeth to be aligned and straight, so hopefully it will help! It is 15 mins long, but you will need to play it it a couple of times a day or longer, then maybe a few times a week for maintenance, to keep them aligned and straight!

There is also this dental healing binaural beat frequency you could try too, which has music to it. Just be consistent with them and they should help! 🙏🤞🙏

Thank you so much. Unfortunately the vets originally said that they could get an appointment yesterday but they have now said they can only do Friday morning! I'm not sure if we can wait that long! He is still eating just a little slower but his weight is still dropping. I have started syringe feeding critical care however he would only let me give him 1ml which isnt nearly enough. He also won't lick it off anything but he does love the taste. Any tips on hoe to get him to have it better?

I think you just have to keep on trying to give him the syringe, most of them don't like being fed this way but it's the only way you will keep him alive until Friday!

Best of luck and please try those frequencies as well as they could help his teeth to heal!

It’s just practice for you and him getting used to it too. I had to syringe feed a piggy for 8 weeks once. The first few times didn’t go well. But by the end I was getting 15ml into him five times a day. If someone can hold him while you feed that’s much easier. Good luck.

Thank you so much. We have just had the vet appointment. He is on antibiotics and antibiotics flammitory meds this weekend and is booked in again for Tuesday where they will try to file his back teeth however he may need to be sedated at another appointment if that doesnt work. Apparently his front teeth are fine even though they are diagonal? So I'm hoping that the meds will help and I will definitely keep going with the critical care too and will try the frequencies! Thank you so much to everyone!

Oops. Autocorrect. I meant anti inflammatory meds and antibiotics.

I’m sorry to hear this.

His front teeth being diagonal is a sign that he been favouring chewing on one side rather than both sides, thus causing uneven wear. It doesnt mean there is a problem with the front teeth themselves.

I hope he is ok
