Has anyone got any ideas about mr johnson's 'gloria'. I had to get an emergency bag while i'm waiting for my delivery of wagg but could only get this brand in my pet shop and i've never heard of it. Is it a decent brand?

thats my problem, i've never heard of it either :) i'm a bit worried it's a cheap and nasty brand and now i've opened it the extra sweet smell is a bit worrying, it kindof smells like sugar beet for horses and i notice it has stick type bits in it and alfalfa. maybe i'll have to hunt the 2 supermarkets we have here and see if they have any food in yet till mine arrives but nothing open here on a sunday due to religion so it will have to wait till monday......i feel bad now :(

I think it was iloveanimals that brought it and I seem to remember it had a lot of colourings etc, but it will be fine for a few days I'm sure O0

Its got 'love your pet' on the front of the bag, i'll not give them to much and lots more hay and veg over the weekend, they probably won't eat it anyway as it's different so maybe a good thing they are fussy. It's a shame as this pet shop seems to want to care for them but i think it's failing a bit. I noticed today that all the rabbits and piggys they had in where full grown and they had 2pigs in with a rabbit. I wanted to take them all home as i know they were there the last time i went in and that was months ago. I might just have to invest in a few new cages and give them a new home....kindof jokingly ran it past OH earlier and didn't meet massive objections as i thought i would so mmmmm :smitten: :)

You are much better off rehoming from a rescue, at least if those piggies dont get sold, he cant buy more, and it might put him off selling pets in teh future, if you buy them, he will just replace them O0 ;D

If you are worried in a month or so...tell him you will take them for free if he cant sell them, so at least if he has enough of them they will go to a good home O0

thats a good idea as i was in two minds because of the thought he might just get more in. I don't think there is a rescue here, i certainly can't find any info about one. The closest to me is a couple of days journey there and back. If i go back in a month or so and the same one's are still there i will suggest it as you say, maybe he will have given up on the idea of being able to sell any by then and not bother ordering more. :)

I worship Mr. Johnsons, I don't like Wagg because of the EC colourings in it - my Guineas scoff Johnsons Supreme Guinea

Hi,

I have not seen this feed. What is the protein content and does it contain molasses?.From what you say I take it that it does not contain colourants?.

I thought adult pigs werent supposed to have alfalfa? doesnt look good to me, and wagg optimum doesnt contain coulourants.

it says on the packet EC colourings - but I won't argue. Personal choice- you can feed alfalfa, just not lots of it regularly

I would not use Johnsons Gloria to feed my pigs.I am not sure about the locust beans it contains, they may be safe,I will have to research this.

Wagg optimum does contain colourants which is why I do not use it.

Locust beans sometimes have seeds in them, the Southern Cavy Club alerted people to this years ago and advised people against feeding them.
Wagg Optimum does NOT contain colourings, but it has alfalfa which is why I don't feed it and its high in Protein. But in a limited amount it would be OK.
Wagg guinea pig Crunch does not contain colourings either- they both contain EEC additives but it doesn't state what that is :)

EEc additives probably are colourants, and if they do not say what they are,I would be suspicious.I would not give the mix to my pigs anyway.

It is up to every owner to research thoroughly before deciding on a feed.If you phone the manufacturers and speak to their nutritionist, you can often find out about ingredients that are not listed on the packaging.

I have used Optimum- I try them all out! It does not have colourings! The Wagg Crunch does not either! Also tried it. The only reason I don't feed it is because of the alfalfa :) Yep, i agree if you're suspicious then don't feed.

I believe the EEC additive is antioxidant :) in both cases :) its certainly not the offending sunshine yellow. :)

Wagg Optimum Premium Guinea Pig Food contains Wheatfeed, Sunflower, Grass, Lucerne, Oatfeed, Maize, Locust Bean Meal, Syrup, Vegetable Oil, Yeast, Vitamins and Minerals. With Antioxidant: EC additive.
Just found this on their website :)

Lol! I dont use either ;D but i want to change them over from P@H nuggets because they're not particularly good. What's the best in your opinion Karen? Or Mary lol? x

Cavy Cuisine, it has the right size pellets (not horse or rabbit size ones LOL!) and is good for my dental piggies (OD Satins). Occasionaly I give some of them Rabbit Royale as a treat/or change and occasionaly they have Supreme Science- as a treat/change. But their absolute main food is Cavy Cuisine because its based on Timothy Grass- the others say they are correctly balanced re Ca:Ph but Alfalfa is very incorrectly balanced and it depends on what your piggy eats- even with the whole pellets :) Its no dearer because they don't need a lot of it and can actually get fat on it if fed incorrectly ::)

Mine get a mostly hay diet with a few veggies x2 daily. Treats are homegrown goodies. My house has yogurt pots of cereal grass on the windowsills ::)

Lol i know! i plan on growing some myself once the pigs are sorted out with where they're living! Is there a website you order cavy cuisine on or can you buy it in shops? do you give one bowl each a day? At the moment they only get one bowl between two a day because they wont eat a bowl each xx

After a lot of research and trial and error,I started feeding my pigs Chudley Rabbhit Royale 3 years Ago. They are healthy, active and long lived.I have not had a case of cystitis, diabetis or renal stones or renal failure in that time.In fact I get very little iillness.

80% of my pigs diet is meadow hay and dried grass, and when available fresh grass.Veggies and herbs. They have the Chudley every day,but only in moderate amounts.I clean and refill the bowls,a quarter full every morning, and I do not top up.Sometimes they will eat all or most of the dry mix, often they leave some which I dump the next morning. The hay racks I always seem to be topping up because they do eat a lot.,and the dried grass is popular as well.

Sounds like mine mary, they definately eat more dried grass and hay than anything else, am i right to be giving them hay and dried grass twice a day, quite big handfulls? I'm getting a bit concerned about their diet because one of them wont eat much veg at all since he's been ill unless its leafy stuff or carrots and i know thats not good and another has worried me with possible diabetes :( x

Hay (Not Clover/Alfalfa) ad lib Different varieties are eaten at different rates!
Dried Grass: One handful between two pigs per day, it has a good Protein content and Ca:Ph ratio
Pigs don't need lots of veg, he's doing the right thing by eating leafy greens and some roots (just not too many :) )

Cavy Cuisine is 25g per pig and no topping up. If they start to leave any I cut it it down and every so often I cut out dry food altogether.

Cavy Cuisine is available from Sue at Sph Supplies she's very helpful and makes a donation to the rescue every month and even sends the guineas presents ::)

Aw i wil order some of that then :) o right i thought we'd just spoilt him when he was sick! I used to give carrot once a week but lately ive changed it so they have the same amount but in pieces daily, so they probably have about 1 carrot between two a week, he eats romaine lettuce and spring greens most days, he loves spinach but ive only given that once a week, he used to love parsnip and turnip too but turns his nose up at that, he wont eat green beans, peeper or baby corn, but he doesnt mind a propper corn on the cob, he likes cellery and corriander too. Do you think he's doing ok with these or should i be cutting them out and encouraging him to have some of the others? he's still gaining weight etc. sorry for all the questions! Just really want to get them eating better! xx

Feed baby veg as opposed to full grown when you can. Corn on the cob is nice but starchy, still feed it but with leafy greens.

Ok thanks :) he doesnt get the full corn on the cob, i split one into 3 bits for each cage, Ralf gets the smaller bit because he's on his own :)

My pigs have hay and dried grass available all the time.As I have said in previous messages ,the more variety of veggies the better.

I have several pigs who will not eat much veg. Some pigs are very choosy eaters and will only eat certain things, but as the pigs in question are healthy and good weights I do not worry about this.

You mentioned a worry about diabetis?,do you have a pig with symptoms?

Well she has recently started drinking a lot, there is a thread called 'drinking loads' in health and illness i think. she has no other symptoms, someone just suggested it was a possibility. She weighs 2lb (920g) and has not lost a dramatic amount of weight since the drinking started, she is drinking about half a bottle every 2 days which seems a lot to me since she has never been interested in it before. she hasnt started eating a lot either. I'm hoping its just a phase she's going through x

It probably is just a phase Emma, Flora is the same. Mine get 5 different veggies a day. They were getting 10 but they were putting on a lot of weight so I give more grass and hay and they are happy. Is exel ok? I changed from p@h nuggets to this a few weeks back. Sunshine loves it but not sure the bain of my life Twinkle does! ;D

I like the idea of Timothy based foods! :)
