In a bid to save some money and also to be organic, I planted some seeds a few months ago. I planted kale, cabbage, brocoli, sweetcorn, chicory and carrots.

Wow! The leaves have now all appeared and I have been picking off leaves for the boys and mixing it in with their normal supermarket veggies. They now dig out my homegrown bits and eat them first! I am so delighted!

I don;t have a big garden, I used any spare bit of earth and bought some deep pots and filled them with compost. THe sweetcorn has leafy stalks, no cobs yet, I doubt I will get cobs as I live in the north of Scotland and not much sun, but they love the leaves! It's saved me so much money and I have the satisfaction of giving them something totally fresh.

I've never attempted vegetable growing before, but I would definately do it again.

What lucky piggies.Home grown tastes so much better.I havew tried to grow veggies but the soil in my garden does not seem suitable(that is my excuse anyway,I am not a gardener!).I am growing some wild rocket though and that is doing well. Most of my pigs like it and I love it.

We have just started to expand our veggie crop too! I always grow runner beans, tomatoes and cucumbers but this year I have attempted carrots, parsley, peppers and mixed salad leaves as well as the more common round lettuce (and potatoes for us humans only!). I noticed my carrots are just being to pop through the soil so am hoping to have a reasonable crop to share with the piggies, the salad leaves seem to be very slow, either that or the birds have already eaten them!

i saw a program on the tv about growing vegetables earlier this year and thought i would give it a go, just starting with a few things, i planted silverskin n spring onions, radishes, beetroot, peppers and some sort of pea cant remember what sort they were and potatoes and i can't believe how well everything is growing i honestly thought nothing would work but they have all grown!

I grow cereal grass, yarrow and herbs for mine and they love it. I wish I had room for lots more, it is very satisfying O0

I grow grass and dandelions for mine! ( well thats my excuse for not cutting it!)

I would love to grow some veggies. I have been growing herbs for the piggies so maybe I should give veggies ago :)

we are doing our garden up atm and have planted two huge bedding boxes for vegetable plots at the bottom of the garden we have planted:

cabbage, kale, carrots, brocolli, potatoes, radish, spring onions, red/white onions, peas in pods, lettuce, swiss chard, tomatoes, rhubarb, melon, cucumber and a few other things too..not all for the pigs as they cant eat some of the things, but mainly for us i started to grow carrots for my guinea's then my mum decided to have a vegetable patch so i can have a few cabbages etc off what we are growing for my piggies :)

my piggies love my homegrown stuff the best! i grow a lot too, but am going to grow more next year so the humans and piggies get a lot! :D

As well as the Cereal Grass I am growing Sunflower Greens too, quick and easy and loved by the guineas... My Kale is coming on a treat now too. Herbs - well, life's too short and the veg shop is cheap enough for Dill and Coriander :)

My Forage and Hide Grass is begging to have some guineas on it, just need some dry weather ::)

Hi Karen,
Hope you dont mind me asking, but where did you get the grass seeds and sunflower greens seeds?.I might give these a go,should be fairly easy to grow.We do have a lawn which has long grass round the edges, but with so many piggies it does not go very far.

We have been growing our own veg/fruit for ages (have two allotments and a massive garden) but this year have planted a lot more herbs. Things seem to be on a stand still at the moment with all this rain and no sun but still seem to be growing...slooooooowly. (spinach and kale are the biggest success, also have basil and parsley doing okay :))

Planet Guinea

... I sell a few seeds that I grow myself. I'm waiting to get some more Cereal Grasses in (due to the weather I'm not sure when this will be now) but have Timothy and Orchard grasses either seperately or in mixes. The Sunflower Greens are very easy to grow and very nutritious as I'm sure you know :)

Its one of the most satisfying things to do for my piggies i love it
I'm growing the orchard grass from planet guinea at the moment and also a few other things ive found, raspberry, yarrow, groudsel, camomile, plantain, parsley, rocket and other herbs etc its amazing how quick it all grows and the piggies adore it!
I now have 2 green houses full and our veranda is now covered in bigger plants for cultivating next year- its reaaly exciting! (I'm sad i know!)

Ive put a page on my website with tips on growing wild stuff, if anyone wants more detailed instructions do ask and ill help where i can i just stuck to the basics otherwise i could have done pages and pages but its really worth a go, karens a pro too epecailly if you want to try growing some grasses! :)

Thanks Karen and PP.I was not aware of Planet Guinea before-brilliant site-I will be placing an order later.

:) July orders receive a sample of Leafy Kale with their order. Its great stuff and so easy to grow- which for me is the main thing :)

do you think ill be able to grown some stuff if i put it in pots and put it on my kitcken or bedroom window sell

i can grown mine outside the birds would eat them as we got a rather lot in our gadran looking for my cat

You should be able to Hannah, the sunflower seeds are really easy to grow. I grow mine in pots and trays because the slugs get them in the garden and I don't put anything down to kill them. Inside is fine. Mine are outside at the moment some are in a run (the guineas can't go in there its too wet!) with the lid on as we have a lot of pigeons around here that like the the kale ::)

Kale is started in pots until its big enough to survive a slug attack and then put outside. You could grow in deep pots or trays and feed the baby leaves. Still waiting for Cereal Grass to arrive I'm afraid... I do have some Plantain which grows well inside and is easy to grow.

Alfalfa is also very easy to grow and is good if you have lots of guineas, only feed as a treat though and not pigs with bladder stone/sludge problems.

There's trial sizes if you want to try something. :)
