Oh my goodness! I just love snail right now I have two garden snails. I want some giant African land snail but I live in the US. There illegal in the US:( nice set up.

Aww what a shame :( Garden snails are ace as well though!

Wow! Thanks for the insight into them Ruth

Aw, they're lovely!

I used to have an aquarium and decided to expand on fish so had aquatic frogs, shrimp and an apple snail. Called him Zephyr as we though it was ironic - ha ha, snails are slow - but he zipped about all over the tank and used to try and get through holes in rocks, forgetting he had a massive house on his back! So much personality, too, which is not initially expected!

One question - my understanding is that snails are difficult to sex (we just 'gave' Zephyr the male gender!), how can you tell they're girls?

How confusing, No wonder Harriet and Michaela don't come when you call them, they're really Harry and Micheal! :))

Do you hold them, or do they plod up & down. What's the size of them?
How do you know they are sick or do they just die.
I've got a hundred & one questions about these fellas or ladies.

Ok, so they can live up to around 10 years. You can handle them and they do get used to being handled. You can tell their health by their shell. If its smooth and shiny then they are in good health. If its cracked, ridged, dull or flaky then they could be lacking in calcium which helps them grow and repair their shell. Also, they A-sexual, so are both him and here :)

@Flutterby Dylan my aquatic rabbit snail looks like he's chipped the end of his shell off - I imagine by climbing to the top of the tank then dropping :( It looks like he's clean lost the end of his cone. Should that grow back? He's not acted any differently, still active, still climbing, still eating!

I know aqua isn't your area, but just wondered what you do if your ladies shells get damaged (I know some aquarists use resin/glue but I am no way experienced or confident enough to attempt this!)

I've never kept aquatic snails but I don't see why they wouldn't heal like normal snails. He will probably repair the tip which will eventually grow out either way.
