Hello everyone.

My guinea pig (named Broom) has been sneezing a lot with a running nose, so we brought him to a vet and now he needs to take antibiotics for 10 to 14 days, morning and night, using syringe.

When we feed Broom the medicine, we follow the vet`s instruction to wrap him with a towel and a bit of moderate force, since he's very reluctant and has been a nervous piggy. This morning he sounded very annoyed when we took him out and feed him medicine, which is very rare as he is very passive compared to our other piggy.

Both of my pigs used to be happy and excited when we feed them fresh veggies, but now Broom is indifferently staying in the shades and just eats the pellets we fed them in early morning (emotional issue? hope they don't hv good memories)
He has respiratory infection, and we are really worried about his health condition.

We need help. Thanks for any input.

Hi

Have a read through our medicating guide; you may find the tips in there helpful. Wrapping is usually not necessary.
I am also adding our guinea pig whispering guide, so you can use that to get Broom to be more cooperative during medication by establishing your authority, especially if you tell him that you love him before and after in piggy body language. If he is on baytril, it is the most foul tasting medication imaginable (don't test it yourself; baytril is BAD for humans!) but I have yet to meet a piggy that likes it. You can however eventually get them to take it with some persuasion if they trust you. Have something strong tasting like ribena handy to give straight afterwards in order to flush away the awful taste.

Medication (unless a piggy loves it) is never a happy time, especially not if it is involves manhandling. The good news is that you will be forgiven again after the end of the course of treatment.

PS: You can find lots more useful guides via our guide collection section.

Thank you so much for the help and info, Wiebke. We will try and apply the method later tonight.
Yes, the antibiotics is Enrofloxacin, under baytril. It has a cherry flavor in it, my least favorite fruit

We have to give the piggies mite medicine every two weeks at the moment and I can tell you they are not happy with us afterwards and during.
Your piggie will forgive you after the course of the medicine

Some of my pigs have been in a snit about it when I needed to give them medication. Hadley was on an antibiotic and vitamin C supplement last winter and I was definitely on her radar as a person to avoid for awhile. She did forgive in time though. This too shall pass!

My boys enjoyed their antibiotics for the first coupe of days, but suddenly decided they weren't having with it anymore. What worked for me was sucking up a little bit of green bell pepper juice into the syringe since bell peppers are their favorite snack. After a couple tries, it seemed to trick them long enough for me to squirt the medicine into their mouths before they realized it wasn't a pepper they were nibbling. Hope this helps!

When I had to give my Rainbow Piggie Lenny Baytril the vet told me to add some orange juice to the syringe after I had the correct dose of Baytril in the syringe and let it mix together. Lennie then took it quite happily. I had to give him sulfratrim as well which he took no bother I did the baytril first then the sulfatrim after.
