I noticed something strange about my guinea pigs. I know I will need to go to a vet soon. However I want to make extra sure if my piggies will be okay. I was cleaning their cage and I noticed a little puddle of light red but clear pee. My dad told me he fed them carrots and that's why their pee is red. However, I went on the internet to make sure and apparently it may be a bladder kidney infection. I'm not too sure. I haven't heard them squeal or made any noise at all when they were urinating or pooping. They are also really healthy and skittish. They are still running everywhere :)!

Please tell me if what it is if you can Identify it. Here are some photos after it was dried up.
THANKS

:wel: to the forum.

On some of you photos, the patches are brown - guinea pig we does go brown as it starts to dry. However, I think I can see a bit of blood in a few of your pictures. I agree with you about taking them to the vet. One of them may have a urine infection . The vet will discuss this with you.

Some of them also look like blood stains to me. So a exotic vet visit is a must, the soon you know what's going on with them, the better.

Some the stains are bloody, but others are just normally rusty oxidised urine and nothing to worry about.

Good that you are planning to see a vet. Whatever it is, you have caught it in the early stages, so I wouldn't panic. It is likely a UTI (urinary tract infection). Make sure that you guinea pig is drinking plenty and give him a little extra (but not so much as to cause diarrhea!) mildly diuretic veg like lettuce or cucumber to help flush the bladder.

If your vet is diagnosing UTI, please ask him for metacam/loxicom if he doesn't prescribe it. That is a painkiller/anti-inflammatory which helps to bring the symptoms down and ease the discomfort.
Your vet should check the bladder to see whether it is hard and thickened or still soft and relaxed when making his diagnosis. If the bladder is still soft, he will treat for UTI first and foremost.
Get some probiotics to help bolster the guts as he will be given an antibiotic, which is usually appetite dampening as it affects the gut bacteria as well as the urine bacteria.

All the best!

I do see blood in some of the above pics and would definitely see a vet for treatment for a potential urinary tract infection. Some pigs have them and are relatively asymptomatic other than blood in the urine. To pinpoint which pig is passing the blood, you might have to isolate them until they pee and gather a sample. I used to put my pigs in a Rubbermaid bin and feed them watery veggies until they would pee and then syringe it up and put it in a container for the vet, although I could generally tell which one was passing blood by the initial sample.

yes it looks like blood in a couple of the photo's, a vet visit required i'm afraid. as suggested above ask for painkiller/anti-inflammatory metacam/loxicom and 1-2 hours after antibiotics give the probiotic to boost the good gut bacteria.

let us know how she gets on

healing vibes. xx
