Hi, my Guinea pig is not eating, but four days ago he was fine eating all his veges and hay. Now he only takes the critical care. His weight is 901g.

He look healthy he jump around and run when I put him in my room.

I took him to the vet, she checked him his teeth they were fine no sharp ends and the front teeth werent long. she suspect that he has something in the back of his mouth since he is not eating, so she said we better put him under anaesthesia (GA).

Do you think it's danger for him to go under GA and this will be the third time for him, he already went into two and he came out fine. But I'm scared because it's the third time. First was because he has infection and second because of his teeth.

So is it dander to do it and put him under GA?

Hi and welcome!

It depends on how long it is since he's been put under before. With a decent time span in between, there shouldn't be any higher risk. I hope that you can get to the bottom of it.

Loss of appetite can have a wide range of causes; but it is most often due to pain or dental issues. it is always very worrying when you are up against a mystery weight loss/loss of appetite.

Here is our syringe feeding guide: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

I think last time he was under anaesthesia was at the beginning of this year at January.

In that case, I would not worry; if it had been the second time within a month, then there would have been a bit higher risk.

I sincerely hope that your vet can get to the bottom of it all!

Hi!

I know your vet rules out a dental issue, but i dont see how they can just put it down to something at the back of his mouth. Just because he isnt eating; doesnt mean he cant. It could be that he doesnt want to due to pain, which could be coming from anywhere in his body.

Have you checked the recommended vet locator on the forum to find a piggy savvy vet near u? I think this should be your next step, and try and get an appointment sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, continue with syringe feeding: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

All the best

I have been treating his teeth over a year with the sane vet. so this is not his first time suffering cuz of his teeht. a while ago i gave him hay, he tried to eat it but kept opening his mouth.

and this vet is exotic vet, she come to the clinic near my area from one of the recommend vet hospitals i found in this website. when i called the hospital to book app. it was full and she told me that one of their exotic vet goes to this clinic, she is trust worthy, and have been doing surgeries for my other piggyes and they went out well from them.

I'm glad she is a recommended vet. However as they dont see an issue with the teeth at the moment, and as dental issues ar usually secondary to another pain causing condition, it may be worthwhile looking into that.

Thank you for reply.

I hope he will be fine and something not that big. I will keep you updateed

Hopefully your vet can get to the bottom of it. You should weigh him daily at this point to have an idea how much he is eating, if his weight keeps dropping you will need to either increase the volume of critical care each feed or the frequency.

Good luck x

I'm currently feeding him about 25 ml every 4hours is this enough? Also I'm feeding him carrots juice and he is taking it. His weight is still the same as yesterday 901g.

Thank you.

Is that every 4 hours as in through the night too or just during the day? If straight through then that works out at 150ml a day which is actually above the required amount- but since his weight has only stayed the same and not increased then this is obviously the amount he is requiring so keep going with that. As long as you dont syringe more than 0.5ml into his mouth in one go to make sure he can swallow it before the next mouthful, he should be fine. If he shows any interest at all in hay/pellets etc, make sure you tempt him with those before u are about to syringe feed, so that he isnt too full to want anything x

Yes during day and night.

Okk I will try giving him these before syringe feeding him.

The hay will be the most important thing as this keeps the teeth worn down. If you find hes interested in hay then maybe give a little less food or less often so that hes hungry enough to eat hay on his own. Obviously if hes not keen, keep doing what you are doing until he sees the vet again.

All the best x

Okk sure I will do that thanks a lot for you replies and help I appreciate that.

Thank you again

I guess that your vet wants to check for elongated roots or a dental root abscess brewing? Oral thrush (fungal in the mouth) or a mechanical obstruction is also possible.

Chop up or grate any veg into small strips, and if necessary, place them in his mouth. We have got a section for dental guinea pigs in our syringe feeding guide.

Ohh really I hope he's Okk and that vet can help him.

Okk sure I will check that guide. Appreciate your help.

Control the overall food intake by weighing daily at the same time. This will help you to judge how much syringe feed your guinea pigs needs, so you can adjust the amount you give over the course of a day accordingly.

Hii, sorry i was so busy with taking care of my piggy. He got out of the dental surgery yesterday in the afternoon. he did not start to eat by himself yet. i still hand feeding him some critical care but he is taking it less than other days. i also feed him veggies juices.

but after i feed him this morning his heart beat were faster than usual, i know that piggyes has faster heart beats, but he is differnt than usual, and along with fast beats he keep shaking but not that hard. yet he still can move around and all.

Hi sorry we missed your last post- how is he now? Did he see a vet for the shaking?

Hi, nah that's ok, before I went I hold him next to me then he become better. I went to the vet and got him some pain Med and he is better now. he is now trying to pick his food, but he only ate lettuce and a little bit of it. But he's getting better. Thank you all for the help.

Please weigh him daily o monitor how much hes eating, if he losing weight please continue to syringe feed as this is vital to keep the guts moving.

Did your vet know why he is painful?

Yes I do weigh him, his weight currently is approx 887g, before the surgery he was around 840g. He gain more but I'm increasing the hand feeding amount to make him gain more weight.

Since he is healthy and jump around and move pooping and peeing is normal, so he was in pain because of his mouth because he found it difficult for him to eat as now he is taking the pain Med he is better.
