I hope you guys don't mind but, I wanted to tell you how I came by my guineapigs.
someone chris works with basically approached me, said that if she couldn't find a home for her two Gp's, that they'd go to her daughter in law who's spoilt children had already killed two guineapigs. I asked her how and she said she wouldn't be surprised if they had thrown them or something horrible, well i'm a huge sucker, I can't stand cruelty as I know you guys can't either. So I said, I'll take them. My other half disagree'd at first, our flat is a studio with barely any room, but I said I'd take them and rehome them to a better place.
I went at half one in the morning when the lady had fineshed work to collect Lilly, but she told me Bee had already been promised to the daughter in law. I was so upset I cried most of the night. But I had lilly, atleast I'd done some good.
when Lilly came to me, she was in a small 12" stacker box, you know the ones I mean? Due to it being so late at night I didn't have time or money to get anything ready, but the next day I went to the local pet shop and bought a cage, medow hay and excell pellets. It was all I could afford for the moment.
During the course of the day, the woman who gave me Lilly, phoned and said that her husband had agreed that Bee looked miserable, and that he wanted his wife back. so, at 10:30 in the evening, i collected Bee, in the exact same style of box. The woman explained to me that she thought lilly was pregnant already, I didn't have much choice but to put her and Bee together, I couldn't have him in a tiny box it was cruel.
when Chris got paid the following week I bought another cage, and although they'renot perfect. They're the best I can do right now. The woman who gave them to me told me that they didn't need any expensive food, that they lived off fresh veg and only needed a small amount of Hay. They never get ill and there's no point having insurance on them. The babies would be fine but that Bee had to be seperated because he might try to eat them. WELL.
Over the past three months that i've had them I have learnt that:They do not produce their own Vitc so they do need Pellets. That lettuice other than Romanian has a high water content and isn't so great. That they do get ill, quiet easily actually and that a lot of places do inscurance and it is worth doing. The babies might be fine unless the lady was off by a few months by Lillys age, in which case her bones could have fused, and that Bee probably wouldn't eat thebabies but he might try to get Lilly pregnant again.
So, I seperated them and they've been living happy lives untill lilly had the babies.
My other half was the one who was home when she had them, he didn't even notice he was so tiered from work. I came home later and was shocked to see, baby guineapigs.
So that's our story. The lady who gave them to us, we do not speak as she is a complete tool. but I love my guineapigs.
