I hope you guys don't mind but, I wanted to tell you how I came by my guineapigs.

someone chris works with basically approached me, said that if she couldn't find a home for her two Gp's, that they'd go to her daughter in law who's spoilt children had already killed two guineapigs. I asked her how and she said she wouldn't be surprised if they had thrown them or something horrible, well i'm a huge sucker, I can't stand cruelty as I know you guys can't either. So I said, I'll take them. My other half disagree'd at first, our flat is a studio with barely any room, but I said I'd take them and rehome them to a better place.

I went at half one in the morning when the lady had fineshed work to collect Lilly, but she told me Bee had already been promised to the daughter in law. I was so upset I cried most of the night. But I had lilly, atleast I'd done some good.

when Lilly came to me, she was in a small 12" stacker box, you know the ones I mean? Due to it being so late at night I didn't have time or money to get anything ready, but the next day I went to the local pet shop and bought a cage, medow hay and excell pellets. It was all I could afford for the moment.

During the course of the day, the woman who gave me Lilly, phoned and said that her husband had agreed that Bee looked miserable, and that he wanted his wife back. so, at 10:30 in the evening, i collected Bee, in the exact same style of box. The woman explained to me that she thought lilly was pregnant already, I didn't have much choice but to put her and Bee together, I couldn't have him in a tiny box it was cruel.

when Chris got paid the following week I bought another cage, and although they'renot perfect. They're the best I can do right now. The woman who gave them to me told me that they didn't need any expensive food, that they lived off fresh veg and only needed a small amount of Hay. They never get ill and there's no point having insurance on them. The babies would be fine but that Bee had to be seperated because he might try to eat them. WELL.

Over the past three months that i've had them I have learnt that:They do not produce their own Vitc so they do need Pellets. That lettuice other than Romanian has a high water content and isn't so great. That they do get ill, quiet easily actually and that a lot of places do inscurance and it is worth doing. The babies might be fine unless the lady was off by a few months by Lillys age, in which case her bones could have fused, and that Bee probably wouldn't eat thebabies but he might try to get Lilly pregnant again.

So, I seperated them and they've been living happy lives untill lilly had the babies.

My other half was the one who was home when she had them, he didn't even notice he was so tiered from work. I came home later and was shocked to see, baby guineapigs.

So that's our story. The lady who gave them to us, we do not speak as she is a complete tool. but I love my guineapigs.

Well done for taking them in! Some people just don't gave a clue do they? Well atleast you have some beautiful piggies now! Did you keep the babies? :))

awww thats a great story well done you ! Your black and tan looks like my pixie x) except with long hair xx

Thanks everyone for your kind words I really appreciate them. It's horrible the way people treat animals like they're nothing or a lesser life form. It makes me sick :( xx I'm depserate for a long haired guinea, so if anyone knows of one please PM me :) x

Well done you. Those guineas sound like they needed a good home! Glad you rescued them :).

Oooh, I'd love a long-haired boy too ;). Unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be :)) ) they don't have any in any rescues near me :(.

Good luck with all your piggies and your search for more :))

What a lovely story. I am so glad that they are with you and not with a family whose kids could kill an animal.

one of my boys is long haired and is so cute x

Great on you (and your OH) for taking those cuties in and looking after them well. One of my first piggies was a black and tan aby as well; I loved her dearly!

We do have lots of solid information which you might find useful in our reference section as well as the top of the other sections. But you are always free to ask any question you may have!

You guys are really nice :) <3
I so want a shelty or a peruvian and I can't find a shelter near me. It's cool though, i'll keep looking and I'm sure when I'm in the right position to have a new critter the opertunity will present itself. If I'm honest with myself I don't realistically have the room for anymore, especially as we are having to relocate to my parents for a few weeks to get back on our feet.

I put a baby toy from teh charity shop - washed in a washingmachine twice for good luck - in the baby girls cage, they're currently sleeping under it.

its adorable!

I've been reading it religiously. Especially the parts about the toys and cages, I'm looking to make a C&C cage. When I first got my guineapigs, I thought that C&C was like a brand name, like designer cages or something. So I started searching for the same thing and couldn't find anything. Then I came to realise that it's not a brand name, it's sort of anything but... you can get them from lots of different shops you can buy them individually or as storage units and re arrange the shape and construction of them. I thought they'd be really expensive, but it turns out that when I move, I should have enough room to make one for 40 quid. which I thought was rather reasonable being as it would be about the same amount ofspace as the two cages i have now and that between the two, they cost about 60.

i'm searching the charity shops, although they're not what they were when I was younger, basically mostly full of toot that no one really wanted for pennies that most people had. Now it seems that more and more of them are full of brand new stuff.
