Olivia has been ill since the night to saturday.:( We were at the vet friday because og three of my piggies has got bladder infections.
They are being treated for that now. But I found Olivia ill saturday morning.

She couldn't walk or stand. She seemed quite disoriented and dizzy and her poo was rockhard and dry and really small.
She also layed flat on her belly all the time and her head on the ground. She seemed exhausted.

We were at the vet that afternoon and he couldn't tell what was wrong. It wasn't dehydration as I thought.

He checked her over and she seemed kinda normal - except she wasn't. Excellent shape he said, but the behaviour wasn't right. But what was wrong with her?
He gave her some corticosteroid (I've tried everything else possible) and then we would have to see for to monday how she was.

Well... We did see improvement, however not very fast. On monday she was able to stand, but not walk straight. Her poo was more normal and came at a regular basis. The vet gave her another shot of corticosteroid and again today.
The original disease is now a lot better, but not quite gone.

However - this morning her stomach was really messed up.:( Her poo was a constant flow and it was liquid. I gave her som Fíbreplex and Bio Lapis and some porridge made of Vitakraft special for kids. But then I had to go to school.

When I got home her poo was still liquid and she wasn't feeling well. I gave her some more of these things and now the flow has stopped it seems...

She is drooling - or else it is because I give her water by syringe on a regular basis. I can't really say... It could also be her teeth - although I really hope not!
She is not drinking herself and the eating could be a lot better. She does eat some hay once in a while. And veges she like, but I cant give her that due to her bad stomach now.grrrr

I just needed to relief myself - I'm worried and frustrated! :0

Does she still have runny poo? Do you mean actually like liquid or is it just squishy poo?

If I were you I'd definitely give her some rehydration fluid. We have one here for humans called Dioralyte, not sure if you have that brand in Denmark, but it's a powder which you mix with water, especially to repace the important minerals and electrolytes etc which your body loses when you're dehydrated and/or had diarrhea.

Some people also give certain human diarrhea meds to their piggies but I've never done this and wouldn't know what particular brands you have over there anyway. Is there a Danish piggy forum you could ask on? Or perhaps a local guinea pig rescue which you could ask for advice?

Giving probiotics and cutting out veg is a brilliant idea (as you have done) but if it is actually diarrhea and won't stop then you should take her back to the Vets.

How is she now? Hope little Olivia gets better soon x

Her poo is now squishy. Earlier it was total liquid.
We do have a product with rehydrating effects and probiotics etc. It's called Bio Lapis:
A critical care formulation for rabbits and small pets containing probiotics, prebiotics, electrolytes and vitamins. Specifically formulated as a critical care formulation: Electrolytes help to re-hydrate the animal and prevent against subsequent dehydration. Includes beneficial microorganisms to rapidly populate the gastrointestinal tract Prebiotics to enhance the growth of beneficial micro-organisms.Use:One sachet per day for at least 5 days, or for as long as considered necessary by a veterinary surgeon.Pack size: 15 x 2g sachets.

My main concern right now is her runny mouth. She drools a lot. I'm affraid I might have made a scratch in her mouth with a syringe while feeding her.:( She keeps chewing even though there is nothing in her mouth.
I'm making sure that she gets the fluids she needs.

And I have posted a thread on a danish forum and they do help me, but still. I'm really worried about my little girl....

She does appear to have more energy, but she isn't eating. She tryes but she can't seem to get it in:(

We have Biolapis here but I've never used it so I didn't realise it had rehydration benefits too. Keep going with that then, definitely.

Apart from the corticosteroid injections (which I don't know anything about, I'm afraid) has Olivia received any other meds recently, like perhaps antibiotics for the bladder infection, for example?

I don't really know why she'd be dribbling so much unless it was a dental problem or perhaps even a fungal infection in the mouth. Does her mouth have a stale or unusual smell? This can sometimes indicate an infection.

I'm afraid I can't really be of any more help. I really understand how worried you must be. Hopefully somebody more experienced can advise better very soon x

Sorry to hear Olivia has been so unwell. Was she eating completely normally before she fell ill on Saturday? Was Olivia given any medications at all on Friday or just before she fell ill? Anything different to what she normally has to eat?

I would certainly want the vet to check for dental problems, back teeth in particular, as drooling can indicate dental problems - but it can also be related to other conditions (including dehydration, which is very possible given the diarrhoea she has experienced).

Yes she got a sulfa (sulfa Combin) produkt to cure her bladder infection.

The vet thinks she reacted to that. The only thing I can do now is to stop give it to her and then se if she gets better.

I'm giving her food every hour now to surstain her. She is not well, but she can hold her head up.

The vet says she might be nausious due to the sulfa treatment. That's why she drools. Because her teeth can't grow out so fast....

It wont help. She is getting sicker by the hour. I've dicided to let her go. I'll have an appointment as soon as the vet opens and then she will be put to sleep after school.:0

Really sorry to hear that she's getting much worse.

I'm not sure of the timescales you're dealing with but, as I understand it, piggies teeth grow extremely quickly so pigs who aren't eating usual amounts or are being syringe fed need close monitoring, particularly with the back teeth. Some of the pigs on this forum, with dental problems, need them trimming almost every week as they grow out that fast.

Obviously it's impossible for us to know what's wrong with Olivia as we're not experts and can't even see her - we just try our best to help, from afar. She's your piggy and you know what's best for her.

I'm really sorry that she's got so poorly and your Vet feels that there's nothing more that can be done for her. From what you've said you've tried so hard to help her and clearly love her very much.

Thinking of you both at this sad time x

I'm so sorry, it sounds like she is very very ill, I am sure you are doing what is right for her. Big hugs. xx

Olivia was put to sleep.8... It was swift and she didn't suffer. Now she is at peace and not in pain any more. It was really difficult for me to make the choice - but it was the only option. If my "kids" are suffering - then I'm am suffering. :0 So it was kind of a relief - my little girl shouldn't suffer anymore. That would be extremely selfish of me. She was brave through the whole thing.

Very sorry for you. I can imagine how heartbreaking it was but you made the decision out of love and with her best interests at heart. Olivia looks like such a beautiful girl x

I'm so sorry, my heart goes out to you. She was a stunning girl.

Rest well, sweet Olivia. xx
