Hey, just back from the vets my beautiful Stig has a respiratory infection. He has been separated from Winston at the advice from the vet (who was brilliant). I knew as soon as i heard him that something wasn't right!

Hopefully my baby gets better soon, fingers crossed!

Oh dear, whee hope little Stig will get better soon! URI's can be persistent, take Stig back to the vets if you're at all in doubt :)

Well done for getting Stig to the vet so quickly.

Where abouts are you - and the name of the vet? We try to keep track of the good ones so we can recommend them to people in the same area.

Hopefully your vet has given you the correct dosage? Alot of vets get in wrong. I've got a poorly girl here at the moment, she's 6 days into her course and it's just starting to break, but I think she had it that long before coming into rescue that it's gonna take a while.

Hey thank you all for the support! Stig is still wheezy but still eating and drinking so i think we have caught it early!
The noise he was making i liken to an Ultrasound, i know that sound weird. He is on half a ml of Baytril which we are injecting into his cucumbers which he loves.
Winston is in his playpen and seem a little down in the dumps. It's not ideal having them separated but it's at the vets orders that Stig has some time by himself to recover. They get on so well together and are obviously lost without one an another.
We are making an appointment with our Vet on Tuesday, hating the Bank Holiday are else i would have been there this morning. But the Out of hours vet said if we have any worries or problems to call them at anytime as they are open 24hours.

The Vets is in Belfast and is call Vets Now Earlswood Vet Hospital. The herself, i cannot remember her name but she was amazing and was really easy to talk to and knew what she was talking about.

Fingers Crossed for a speedy recovery!

Can you let us know his weight............. baytril is usually given twice daily if i'm correct? that's what i've always done...:)

Is that dose done twice a day? The one here is on septrin but thats because she's on pregnancy watch. Baytril usually works given the right dosage. I always think they sound like a real pig, snorting away bless them.

good luck to little stig, my old guinea pig afew years ago had to have baytril, from a pippett into his mouth and he HATED it! haha! it was funny to watch his little face though, like a kid sucking a lemon! x

make sure stig is Also getting probiotics as baytril affects the gut flora. Hope he's better soon x

Stig is still a baby. Round about 3 months or little bit more. The Vet said she was hesitant to give him anymore because he is still so little.
I've just finished work and i went upstairs and he is sounding so much better. I think the rest from Winston is maybe doing him good. But Winston is so miserable poor wee man. He must think he is being punished. But the last thing i want is two sick little piggies.
He is getting fed fresh veggie, he loves Parsley. I'm glad he is still eating he needs his strength.

Any tips on cheering up Winston, he is missing his buddy!

Debbie xx

You did the best thing seeking Vet Advice if you hadn't the outcome for your little pig could be very different.

Well Done and healing vibes to your little pig. :)

I told my piggy to vets yesterday with runny nose, bad sneezing etc, got antibiotics, twice a day he had injection.

hope your piggy is better soon.

Must be the time of year. My coco has a urine and is on 0.4mls twice a day. She is still eating but her breathing is still noisy. Got the vets on Thursday again.

Try putting a teddy (make sure he can't chew off anything) this will give him something new to play with and a friend to snuggle up to :)

Good to hear that Stig is feeling a little better, more healing wheeeeky vibes XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

May I ask how you know if he has one?

I think my guinea pig may have a respiratory infection but I am not sure.
He keeps making this weird chesty sound and he kept sneezing earlier quite a bit and rubbing at his nose. The sneezing has stopped but he still does the chest noise...

I've heard him do the chest noise before, too but not in awhile.

This noise.

Hey Julesie, when i notice Stig wasn't well he was making this very loud rumbling sound. I thought it sounded a bit like an ultrasound. As strange as that seems. You will know, my poor Stigs chest was going up and down so fast. But when i was holding last Friday(when he got sick) he started licking me. Which just made me cry because he was ill and yet so affectionate!

Sorry i could watch your video, it would work!

Aww the poor thing. I haven't noticed his chest heaving up and down fast so hopefully thats a good sign.

The noise is called 'hooting' if you could search it and tell me if its the same sound your boy made?

Stig is still unwell, i got the fright of my life this morning when i went in to give them fresh water, veggies and pellets and Stig wasn't moving. He usually runs into his house as soon as anyone comes into the room.
But it just seems to be having a bad day, though he look so fed up and sick, i just want him all better. When i go to pick him him he can't be bothered to run around like he usually does.
I am probably just being paranoid but compared to Winston he still so skinny. I don't know maybe he could have been the runt of his litter. He is eating, i give him a little extra compared to Winston and it's usually almost gone.
I have the vets on Friday, my vet must think i am not feeding him or taking care of him as he is still unwell and not putting on weight.

Along with other stuff that is going on it's all just getting on top of me :0

Make sure he is drinking plenty. When mine have been on Baytril, I made sure they had a syringe of water, every few hours so they didn't dehydrate.

Although you have an appointment on Friday, if you feel he is not getting better, or even looks worse, take him to the vet straight away. These URI's can take hold very quickly. I lost 2 piggies in the same week last July due to URI's 8...

Thank You, it actually didn't occur to me that he might be dehydrated so i have gone up and given him 2 syringes of water and will go up in a little bit to give him some more. I have contacted my vets, he is brilliant but he says if he is eating and taking his medicine then i shouldn't be too worried. He says its like us humans when we are feeling unwell we have our good days and bad days. But i think i will just go maybe tonight or in the morning...hopefully he will get better...

Aww, just caught up with this thread. Get well soon little Stigs, sending healing vibes :laluot_15::laluot_15::laluot_15:

Not good Glynis! Not good at all i have called my vets and he is going to phone me back. If i'm honest i don't think he is going to hang on any longer. I'm utterly heartbroken! I don't want to stress his out any more by going to the vets if he is going to pass. I just want to spend any last moments with him. But if the vet wants to see him i will go down of course. My vet is cavy savvy so i trust what he says!

Please everyone think of Stig and hope he pulls through. If not i hope he goes peacefully!

My vet has just called, he thinks Stig is on his way out. Can't stop crying and i have to work at 5. Don't know how i'm going to do it. My boyfriend will be here so if he does go then he wont go alone. My vet says if he survives the night then to bring his down he will give him the injection so he isn't suffering.

He's going guys...:0

how is stig? I do hope he is ok. When my piggy had a uri she was on 0.4 mls twice daily as Stig is only little then maybe less for him but i syringed it straight into his mouth so that I made sure he got it and it took 2 weeks of baytril for her to recover. I do hope it isnt too late for Stig fingers crossed. x
