My piggie has a respiratory infection

Oh no - c'mon little man, we're all rooting for you to get better.
Antibiotics knock piggies around and I know exactly where you are at the moment, had a poorly boar recently, 3 weeks of treatment, painkillers, probiotics, critical care etc.etc. We nursed him 24/7 (had a sudden bout of acute cystitis following a mild URI) It was wrenching to see him virtually give up but I wouldn't let him, I was in total pieces for two weeks, couldn't eat, sleep or face anyone. Felt inhumane keep forcing him to eat and drink - combination of the antibiotics and painkiller demolished his appetite completely so he needed critical care. Gave him Dioralyte to hydrate him and pestered my vet and people on here for help :red
Paid off as he recovered 100% - the members who assisted me know who they are xx>>>
Really hope your little man can fight this - had tears in my eyes reading your post. Please keep us updated -
Healing vibes for little Stig x>>x>>x>>

Thank you all. You really do not know what this means to me. I love you all for the support and i'm sure Stig does.
I know in my heart that he isn't going to get any better and my vet is amazing and he was so sympathetic on the phone. He knows his Guinea Pigs, i trust 100% what he says.
Stig just looks ill. His eyes and sunken, his nose and eyes have discharges on them. His fur, i don't know how to describe it but it looks different. He isn't eating or drinking now. He is staying at one side of the cage and staying very still. He is shutting down. I hope he is at peace and knows how much Myself, Richard and Winston(his buddy) love him!

Just want you to know we're thinking of you and Stig.

Aw hun, it is truly heartbreaking :0
I whispered to my boy it was ok to go when he was at this stage as I couldn't bear to see him go through anymore (hated myself for saying it but somehow if it was the time, it was that moment as he was sleeping, warm and pain free) The antibiotics and probiotics gave him foul diarrhoea, had to constantly clean his little bits up day and night :(
Your vet sounds lovely but only you know what to do for Stig :...
Hugs to you all and will keep checking back to your thread x>>

I think URIs are the very devil to shift, and piggies are lucky if they live despite antibiotics etc. Dont blame yourself they go down so quickly.

i agree...sadly they just take over and thats it before you know it.

Still, fingers and paws are crossed as you never know and even so i hope your piggie is as comfy as can be x>>

Thank you all! It's a wonderful Cavy Family here, Stig is hanging on, he is eating little bit of cucumber, maybe as a way of hydrating himself but i know it holds not nutritional value. I'll be seeing my vet tomorrow. Well i might have my OH take him as i know i just couldn't handle being there if he does have to be put down.
He seems to be a little( i stress little) more alert than he was earlier. Maybe he can fight it but i think that is just my wishful thinking!

Thank You all again for the love and support for Stig. You really don't know how much it means to me and to Stig. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! x

Poor Stig - I know how you feel with the URI, I lost Keithy earlier this year to one and just had to treat William for one.

You have done your better than best with the poorly guy and everything you could - he knows it.

*Huggs*

Have you tried him with a small amount of Alfalfa hay - good for sick piggies and worth every penny if he'll eat some. My boar nibbled cucumber when ill - as you say, no nutritional content but it was something...anything to keep his gut moving.
Am signing off now so will say ni night, sleep tight to Stig and any other poorly piggies out there. Hang on in there, you can do this x>>

I know it might all seem pretty dire atm...but please do not give up hand-feeding him critical care/fluids etc.....

The darkest hour is before dawn......please keep attending to him no matter how bad you may think (or whatever your vet says).....it's the dedication of the owner in keeping their guts goiing with syringe feeding that saves most piggies lives.....

Hugs to you ...and lots of piggie vibes to Stig

x

i have tears running down my face. Poor pig and poor you!

You two are in my thoughts and I hope he makes it.. Keep us posted *hugs* to you and to piggie!

Thank you all again! I really mean it, i think all this love and support for Stig has done some good he is up eating and drinking. I was so happy this morning i cried! I genuinely thought that when i woke up this morning that we would have lost him. But it looks like he is ready for a fight!
Saying that though, his balance is bad. Bless him he went to scratch himself self earlier and fell over. And i'm needing to clean his wee bum as he is sitting in his own filth.

Thank you all again! I do think all this love and support you have shown towards him has help! Thank you again!

well in that case...have some more healing vibes and huge ones at that.

C'mon Stig we are all routing for you x>>

Was afraid to check on here this morning but am in tears of joy now hearing Stig is fighting :)
Hope you are ok too - he sounds as though he knows he has to stay around and you are a wonderful mummy to him x>>
Love and hugs to you both and healing vibes for little fella to get stronger throughout the day xx>>>

Guys, Stig may have had a stroke. I know i just keeps coming poor love. The vet thinks that is why he was being very still and not eating nor drinking for the past couple days. His balance is terrible right now, bless him he went to scratch himself earlier and fell over and the tilted his head to have a drink of water and fell over again.
He is still on Bayril for his infection. The vet said there is very little that could be done as any damage done obviously couldn't be reversed. He's comfortable and not in any pain so he is staying close to me and i am giving him lots of love and attention!
I want to add he is now eating and drinking as normal, his toilet habits are normal(back to a cage full of poos!)

So for how ever long he is with us he wont no anything more than love. I'm just glad he came into my life and that i can offer him a home!

O no :(

Have you had a look on guinea lynx I am always on that website for advice.

Hope he pulls through x

arrr a stroke really? Well, if so, maybe he will just plod on happy in the knowledge that his mummy loves him and will just go when he is good and ready?

comfy vibes being sent for tonight, much love x>>

Poor Stig, I hope he gets through this ok. Sending healing wheeks to Stig and hugs to you.

Tbh, I haven't researched much about strokes in piggies and what the prognosis is but hopefully he could still have quality of life with the right care.
Hope little Stig goes from strength to strength x>>
It's odd how some threads just stay in your mind and this one certainly has :)

Sorry back from the vets, again. I should just set up camp there shouldn't i!? Well my vet wanted to see Stig again, he'd called another cavy savvy vet and apparently it could be a blood clot he has on his brain, which in itself is a type of stroke. Due to this bloomin' respiratory infection. We just have to monitor him and make sure he is eating and drinking. But if this clot moves to a part of his brain that controls his breathing or hear then...well i think we all know what will happen. Bless him he is a wee dote and has had a hard life so for!

Thanks for all the support my wee (wobbly) man must be feeling it cause he is still here! And Winston too!

I'll post some pics of him later i only have that one on my avatar. You'll love him as much as i do!
