Back from the vets

I've just got back from the vets with Tiny & Gizmo (see other thread) - I asked him about the baytril dosage & he said I was ok to up it but wouldn't give me any more - the amount I've got will only last 5 days :...
I also asked him about septrin & he said he prefers not to use it because of side effects?? I am so worried now that he is not as experienced as I thought he was 8...8...

I've found a lot of vets to be hesitant about anything not licensed for guinea pigs. Basically, anothing other than Baytril! I've come across more side effects from Baytril than from Septrin. Septrin is much gentler on the system.

A lot of vets -my regular vets included - won't give Septrin, I don't know what the side effects are that he refers to, did he say?

No he didn't say he just said he preferred a low dose of baytril (hence the 0.4 mls once a day) because any more can upset the stomach - I told him I was giving probiotic for this :...

I'm really concerned at the moment - I think I need to find another vet mallethead

I am so sorry to hear this...

BIG HUG

If you are serious about looking for a new vet, there is a sticky thread at the top of this section called "recommended vets", perhaps there is somebody in your reach in there?

Thanks Vickyt, I had alook earlier but the only I can see is one Louise (S&T) recommended in Widnes which is a little bit far in an emergency. What a nightmare :(

Sorry to hear your vet won't prescribe Septrin PP5. One of my girlies has been on Septrin on and off for over a year for bladder infections, sometimes on a hefty dose of 1ml x twice daily for up to a month, with no obvious side effects whatsoever. However, if I give her just a tiny dose of Baytril she immediately goes off her food and has an upset tummy. In all the pigs I've used Septrin I have never had an adverse reaction.

I hope Vedra can recommend another vet locally and I do hope you see some improvement in Gerty very soon.

It may be worth phoning Vedra - she doesn't seem to reply to emails very often.
