William has been poorly and lost LOTS of weight - he's been to the vets twice now and it's not his teeth, ears, eyes, a UTI or a URI. The vet seems to think he has an abcess in his tummy/intestine :( it's not worms either as he was all done. It's not mites either.

So the vet has prescribed 0.2 Baytril for 3 weeks (morning and evening) to see if that helps.

He is currently being hand fed, has a fresh supply of EVERYTHING every day, but he's become really listless and lethargic. He's having 20-30ml crushed pellets & a little bran and other guinea pig bits i.e. cucumber, dandelions, cos lettuce, curly kale, 3 x a day.

In his bran/pellet mixture he is also getting some extra vitamins popped in it as well to try and boost him up.

His weight is sticking at around 1lb 9oz and he gets weighed everyday (it fluctuates from 1lb 8.5oz and 1lb 10oz)

I'm obviously worried about him and he's not fighting with the boys - if we take him away from them he wants to be with them more!

I'm at a loose end as to what more I can do, and wondered if anyone has any suggestions or ideas as to what I could do?

I'm so sorry to hear William is not well. Its so frustrating when a piggie becomes poorly and there seems no obvious explanation,.I dont have any advice but just want to send get well wheeks to William. I'm sure others can offer thoughts....

Only other things I can suggest is Metatone (local chemists) and pro-biotic. I think probably by this stage he needs an x-ray or blood taking to see if it is something more serious

Can you give more information was he Xrayed or giving an Ultra-sound to rule out blockage and stones?

What about a Urine analysis?

How is his drinking habits? Does he want to eat the critical care or are you force- feeding him? X

Sorry meant to say all that gubbins up there!

No blockage or anything had ultrasound, not had a urine analysis. Drinking habits haven't changed at all and force feeding as he doesn't like Critical Care rolleyes

:( just wanted to say sorry to hear little William is poorly. Sending him my healing vibes :laluot_29::laluot_29::laluot_29:

I would say an ultra- sound but as you've done that. I would speak to vet and see what they suggest as to what the problem is or what can be done to find out.

It really is a guessing game with these little guys I do hope you get to the bottom of William's problems soon. Sending healing wheeks Williams way. X

poor william. i have no advice either, but me and the boys are sending healing vibes to your little guy. good luck, and keep us updated! xx

I would recommend bloods ASAP while he's got some strength. That way, you're likely to find out for sure whether it's an infection, if it's not, giving him baytril won't help, and will just affect his digestive system and make him weaker. If it does turn out to be an infection, I'd see about trying a combo of antibiotics as an attack from all angles. Hope he's ok xx

Poor William, just wanted to pass on my best wishes for him and send healing vibes his way.

BIG HUG

I am so sorry to hear that he is so unwell. It is so difficult to find what t is when all the obvious things have been excluded. I hope that you and your vet can find what it is soon.

If he doesn't like Critical Care, try mushing up some guinea pig nuggets instead. Some piggies really don't like CC and it may make feeding easier if you can find something he likes. It's important to keep him as strong as possible while trying to find out what is causing the problem.

I'm sorry to hear William is poorly. If you want a second opinion I can recommend Jenny at Active Vets in Tilehurst.

Thanks guys - William is on mushy pellets :)>>> lol but he is loving it.

He seemed to have more energy this evening, bumbling about like a little old man. He ate some hay and some fresh cos lettuce and all his mushy pellets. I am popping to the vets tomorrow morning first thing to get some more tests done.

He's pooping fine too (something else I forgot to say up there ^^ rolleyes)

I hope we can get to the bottom of it too, I love my William!

OMG i just caught up with this...........

GET WELL WILLIAM LOTS OF LOVES FROM US ALL XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

have you tried some poop soup from the little guys, they're healthy this might kick start his gut? Just a thought........

sorry to hear William isn't well. As already mentioned in the thread, taking blood sample might help if not to determine exact cause then to see if the antibiotics are going to help at all - they see white blood cells count in the blood and if it's increased, then they know it's an infection somewhere.
did they take his stool sample to check for various bacteria in the gut? Different bacteria respond to different antibiotics and some might be better suited to kill the infection (if it's there in the first place) than others.

No advice as you seem to have most bases covered - just wanted to send get well wishes to William. xx

Hi hun i wanted to reply to this my monkry had a bladder stone and was ill off his food etc he had an ultrasound and it didnt show anything but he didnt improve so i went back to the vet again this time they xrayed him and he had a 5mm stone which has now been removed. but id suggest too you that you ask for an xray it may not be a stone but just to be on the safe side ask for one. best of luck i hope he feels better soon xx

Oh no, poor baby :(
How old is William ? Doesn't sound much like a stone from my recent experience as there is a tendancy for a piggy to have blood in their urine and awful pain when peeing/pooping.
Keep hoping Suzygpr may see your post or one of the other really good advisers on here - keep bumping the post up regularly, it will catch the eye of someone who has had a similar experience who maybe able to offer some light to you.
Healing hugs and vibes to little William from us all here x>>

Hi guys!

Thanks for your replies, suggestions etc.

Apologies in the delay in replying I've been attempting to do dissertation work.

William is ok - more energetic, eating more, refusing to be weighed and interacting more with the boys.

He went to the vets again and the vet poked, prodded and took various samples and found nada. Looks like it may just be a notoriously hard bug that he's struggling to fight. He's now on Metatone too.

Thanks again guys :)

William is loving the healing vibes you're all sending x

Thanks for the update, glad little William seems to be getting better and fighting off those nasty bugs!

Aw, sooo pleased it's nothing more serious (says she who has had nervous breakdowns over a poorly piggy :x)
More healing vibes for William:

Whee do hope that William continues to munch up big XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

COME ON WILLIAM xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

William only went and gave us a nasty scare this morning :(

He had been fed and was quite content, he then went and sat in the corner of the sofa and his breathing laboured and each time he took a breath it sounded like a pigeon cooing.

Ran him down to the vets as I thought this was his time.

As soon as we stepped into the vets surgery he was fine, the noise had stopped and he was running about in the carrier.

The vet looked him over, listened to his chest several times and came to the conclusion that he was fine and may have just got a piece of food in the wrong place and he was trying to dislodge it.

William is now back home, inside, munching away on food and sulking!

rolleyesrolleyesrolleyes

OMG - he is really keeping you on your toes ;)
I tend to find after the scares they give us, you become a better slave from the experiences, my OH panics at the slightest thing now so one of us has to be calm and in control (although deep down, I'm freaking out :x)
Still doesn't prevent me having paranoia about them though but am just good at disguising it now to prevent him having a breakdown ;)

Little monkey! My pets are really good at that too. A few years back when I still had rabbits, one ended up with hind limb paralysis. I kept her back end clean, hand fed her etc. until my vets appointment came round, booked her in for PTS due to paralysis, she was an incredibly old bunny.... got her out of her carrier at the vets....and off she hopped, making me look like a right idiot! {:|

I think they do it on purpose y'know.

Whats also strange, is that today, my lungs sound exactly like you described William's lol
