So Freddy ( my skinny pig) has been diagnosed with haymite investation - I was only aware due to his scratching.
My Vet said don’t do anything to the scratches ( I’d been using warm water with a tiny bit of salt) just put coconut oil on as she saw some dryness.
The scratches were healing really well but this afternoon he’s caused some new ones that are bleeding .
He’s had the first dose of Naqua as no xeno is available. I know he is likely to still scratch a bit but I am wondering if I should put something on them
I use F10 ointment on his feet at bedtime ( he has redness that the Vet is aware of) and should I apply a little on the scratches ? Or just leave them alone
I’ve attached a photo of the worst one ( not a great photo as he doesn’t stay still for long !)

Poor Freddy, he must be really uncomfortable and those scratches look sore 😞

Personally I would follow your vets advice and not do anything with the scratches however I would perhaps speak with the vet about the coconut oil as she may not be aware that Freddy has open scratches and I'm not sure if putting coconut oil on the open sores is a good idea?

I hope Freddy feels better soon x

I did mention that and she said they’d heal up ok on their own but I might speak to her tomorrow

I would speak to the vet first. What you don’t want is to put something onto his skin which may impact the efficacy of the mite treatment

Poor Freddy.
Hope the mite treatment works quickly and he stops feeling so itchy.
Hope you’re bearing up as well being such a caring and dutiful slave

Aww, sad to see Freddies skin like that. I hope those sores heal real soon.

I hope you have managed to get hold of the vet and they have given you some answers. I hope Freddy is ok today? x
Thank you - I spoke to our Vet over the phone - she said don’t put anything on his scratches as they will heal quickly - she thinks as the days go on the scratching should get less but said if it’s still happening to see her on Thursday ( that’s 1 week since his first treatment) so wait and see - there were no more new scratches overnight or today 🤞

Glad there’s been no more overnight.

So Freddy is scratching much less and no new bleeding scratches overnight - the ones there are healing nicely
I think Freddy has forgiven me as he took a piece of mint from me at bedtime 🥰
I’m trying not to get paranoid over these haymites

Sadly I’ve just noticed some more little scratches but they are just red and not bleeding.
The Vet did say the scratching doesn’t stop overnight and might go on thru dose 2 next week 😪
But he’s eating, drinking, weighing the same and generally being his skittish piggyself so that’s good !

How’s Freddy been today?
Thank you for asking weepweeps - he’s still scratching and was shaking his head at about teatime but he’s settled down now
Geoff was also scratching but as he has fur it’s not as much of an issue
Hopefully the next or two he’ll stop
