My 8 month old female pig Bree had reduced appetite on tuesday of this week. Started syringe feeding regularly, was taken to the vets. suspect GI stasis, given meloxicam and emeprid. thursday she was producing small but formed droppings. Early this morning woke to find she'd had a massive expulsion of diarrhoea overnight and rushed her to a closer vet. he did not suspect GI stasis rather an imbalance in the gut, he gave her sub-c fluids and injected Baytril. I was then prescribed Baytril for 2x daily along with supportive care. As I write this I have her in my arms, she's become so weak and floppy, I can no longer syringe feed her as she's not eating it. I think she's dying and I'm devasted that this is happening and don't know what to do. I think vets will only recommend PTS and at the moment unless she makes it to 9pm she cannot have her other antibiotic. I'm confused and annoyed at the misdiagnosis, as it seems the emeprid brought on the diarrhoea and seemingly is going to take a life sooner than she otherwise would if she had been on antibiotics sooner. Sigh, I'm at a loss, but any advice would be appreciated thank you.

I’m so sorry. I don’t really have any advice. Sending you a hug. Just keep her comfortable.

I'm sorry for your predicament.it would be very unusual for emerprid to cause diarrohea.Baytril can cause side effects in some piggies. Are you able to get to a vet on the recommended list.I'm sorry she is not taking any feed, its difficult.Thinking of you at this difficult time.

Keep her comfortable with her head slightly higher than her body and keep talking to her so she knows you are there. Will she still take water from a syringe?

I'm so sorry to hear this. Sadly if she is no longer accepting food/refusing to swallow then that does usually mean the system has shut down.
I went through this sad event myself just a few weeks ago.
My thoughts are with you

I'm still sat with her and am sadly in agreement with this, her ears are now cool to the touch and she is preferring to lie on her side. But we are enjoying sitting in the same room as her two hutch mates watching Lark Rise to Candleford, it's a quiet, gentille background noise. She does not appear to be in pain, in fact she's relaxed, but I cant see her making it through the night unfortunately. Thank you for your responses they've been most appreciated during this difficult time. it's never easy, but I would say this has been particularly devastating seeing her go from wheeking for her veggies on Monday to her weakened state at just 8 months when she has so much more to give. Will keep the thread updated of any new developments, thank you.

Sadly, no she will not.

It’s so sad when they are so young.

My boy was 6 years old. He had a sore foot so was put on painkillers and antibiotics for a week. At the end of that week he collapsed and was rushed to an emergency appointment. He was losing body temperature and the vet suspected something else was going on but given his age we weren’t going to try to find out. Just 24 hours after the appointment he passed away in my arms. While it has only been a few weeks, I am grateful that we were together at the end and am already taking comfort from that.

Sending hugs
