it's that dreaded time of piggie keeping the next few evenings...

Yes, it's the time when nail clipping is perform. Much to everyone's including us stress and disapointment. Can't believe that after 7 years of piggie slaving, I still dread it as much as the first time.

We use nail clippers, does anyone use the nail cutters that the vets use? If so are they any good...

I still take mine to the vet family friend, just can't bring myself to do it, she uses the proper clippers and makes it look so easy, i think i would prefer to use them than nail clippers if i HAD to do it.

Good luck xx

Yes, we are thinking of switching maybe, I hold piggies and Rach trims.... so I have the easier end of the bargain :))

Next time I'm at the vets i'll ask where we can get hold of some..

You can get them from pet shops, ptherwise amazon i think do them, or ebay.

Ask the vets to show you.... x

i do all mine myself and to be honest it has always been a nightmare until last week. i purchased a pair of nail trimmers from wilkos for £2.99 and they are great. the best buy i think so far. i cut 5 piggies nails in a matter of minutes. they are far better than the old ones i had.

hope this is helpful to anyone looking for a pair. they cut through the nails so easily without any snagging etc

i sit my piggies on my knee with their backs facing me (their faces looking forward) and simply lift each paw and clip. thankfully my pigs sit still for me

I still can't do it myself so I either take them to the vets to be clipped or my mums friend does it but she can only do it when we go home for a weekend in Nottingham mallethead

The above clipper/scissors are very good because they shear the toenail without squeezing it. When I used to use std human type nail clippers that pinchcut, I noticed on clear nails/claws that the quick was seen to recede (sqweezed back into the toe), along with a squeek I realised that this might not be the best way of doing this. Sometimes the std human clippers are needed if the piggies nails are tightly curved, Dindy has a couple of her curved toenails that have to be done this way and the others can be done with the scissor type cutters.

My little ones are so good at nail trimming! My Troy hates it as he hates being held in hands :( and with his head tilt he can only sit one side of my chest...

It takes 2 of us and some apples! We use nail clippers but I'm going to buy the wilkies ones as that may be better for him :) thanks for sharing!

Hi Lee, I use the proper curved small animal nail clippers....and we're always clipping (or so it seems, LOL!). We can do a full clip in no time at all.

Whilst sitting down, Noel holds the piggies against his belly/chest so they're sort of stood up on their hind legs, then I do the clipping.....the piggies don't seem to mind being in that position (in fact, even the most stressy, wriggly guinea pig seems to calm right down in that position) and it gives you really clear access to each nail.

Tracey x

Gonna get some of those clippers tomorrow! Hopefully will make it all go much quicker :))

I hate it too. Often they will pull away and I cut into the quick.:( I feel so bad and guilty for it. I try to trim the tiniest bits off to avoid that happening. I have to get my boyfriend to hold them or it is even harder. I wish you luck!

I've always had these clippers, I didnt know you could use another kind , what were you using, hooman ones? *confused*
Anyway get some of them, sounds like they're gonna make your life easier ;)

i used to really struggle and had to have my oh hold each pig while i cut their claws. mine always used to pull away too. with the clippers from wilkos they cut so easily i can do it all myself without having to have someone hold them for me.

I use nail clippers and grab a nail everytime I see one a bit long, just while they are led on my lap. I find just doing one after a cuddle is less stressful than an 'event' to do them all.

Hello, we had been using the little curved pets ones from the pet shop, but our exotics vet (very good with guinea pigs) told us the human ones are much better as they are sharper and cut straight on rather than at a curve- we've been using them since and it goes so much easier! We only take a little at a time from Clive as he has dark nails, but can see through Burt's nails. My husband firmly holds the pigs up and distracts them with salad whilst I do the clipping. It is a bit nervewracking though, isn't it?!

We have the same ones! Misty is ok but bites when they are being done! :x Thankfully now we have a stealth attack - Mr P holds and I cut! M bites Mr P's wedding ring, I snip away and distract with lovely veggies! (For Misty, not Mr P! :(|))

Good tip I got from here was snipping after bathing - they are much softer, like our nails. However, she needs clipping more often than after a bath!

Misty sends nibbly kisses xoxoxoxo Think we are off to vets for tooth check at weekend though, teeth do not look quite right, although no problems munching!

Misty x) I knew she'd be a nibbler! :)) Hope the vets goes okay on Saturday, let us know how she gets on. Good news she's munching away fine... Is her weight ok? x

Yes! Hooman ones! that made me giggle :))

i used to use normal nail clippers but ive recently brought some pet clippers from a pet shop, they seem to work much better and the boys dont make any fuss when i use them

lol! i just went and found some hooman clippers and they just seem too big lol! i've never tried and am quite frightened at the prospect :(|)
Will stick to my trusty pet clippers that are the same as the wilkos ones but about 8 years old, will not be trying owt new lol!

Hi I'm new to piggies and still getting used to handling them so there is no way I could bring myself to try and cut their nails, how much roughly to vets charge to do this? X

Nails are cut! Piggies were grumpy and in a sulk but parsley soon cured that!
