Nail Clipping....

Hi I'm new to piggies and still getting used to handling them so there is no way I could bring myself to try and cut their nails, how much roughly to vets charge to do this? X

i don't know if you have a 'just for pets' store by you, but the one in wolverhampton charges £2.00 for cutting guinea pigs claws. they do rabbits, dogs etc all are various prices but none are expensive.

I can recommend the lady we use posisparkles.... she is a rodentologist at Taverham vets, but does nail clipping, piggy service and m.o.t's at her house? She is the loveliest friendliest lady you'll meet and has many guinea pigs of her own and really knows she stuff, when lilly had his dental abscess apart from taking him to the vets for a prescription of baytril, she trimmed his teeth, she drained and flushed the abscess from home. She never wants anything for what she does but each time we give her a fiver 4 the 4 piggies and she never wants to take it. She also does holiday boarding (if i am too busy :)) )

xx

Does anyone have any tips for cutting toenails that have curved in? I've tried everything but can't seem to get the clipper around it and with the piggy pulling his foot back I just can't do it.

I'm not sure what I would use for curled nails but I usually use human nail clippers...I'm not sure if they would work - but maybe......

Its that time for me again too but I think I will try to get some of the ones suggested on here - they sound good - thanks for the links :)

Sorry i have only just logged on, she doesn't work at weekends so won't be there but i can PM you her details if your interested, she try's to keep the stuff she does at home on the quiet side.....

I find that the best way to hold them while clipping is to almost cradle them like a baby so his legs are sticking up in the air, then you can hold their legs firmly without hurting them and get a good clean cut with the nail clippers. I have to cut my Shaun's nails a lot because his claws on his back feet grow twisted and curled so he loses his feeting so i try to keep them shorter so they stay straight. Not ideal but the lesser of two evils i think. Having said that it does mean i am now well practiced. Incidentally if you have a light skinned piggie if you hold his feet up to the light you should see how far the blood vessel extends along the toe. The nerves only go as far as the blood vessel so as long as you dont hit that you're ok. Have a look in the light and work out how many millimeters you should chop off and keep to that for every toe on the same foot.

Depends on the piggy i suppose. As i said in the post, one of my guinea pigs Shaun has twisted curved toenails. Try cradling him so he is on his back- if you get it right they kind of play dead and stay still, then you will be able to get his leg. Hold the leg firmly but not too tight, get the clippers in position first and if he stays still give it a quick snip. Like i also said, i also try to keep his toenails a little shorter than normal to stop them curling in the first place. If you are worried about cutting him you cut maybe use an emery board to file it down a little bit a few times a week as an alternative to cutting.

Nail clipping I like, all my pigs are perfect little boys when it comes to nail clipping x) well sometimes Jake likes to be a drama queen. I can have all 5 pigs down in about 5 minutes :))

My only boy is the biggest drama Queen when it comes to nail clipping!

I bought the wilkies clippers on Saturday! They made it sooooo easy! Few mins and both piggies were done!

Hopefully when it's Troys turn it will be easy as its hard work doing his nails!

My Arran is a dream. He just loves being fussed even if it's nail clipping. As he had fungal as a baby we had to bath him lots and put on cream/spray etc so now he's so laid back it's untrue...

Angus on the other hand squiggles and nibbles so much you nearly chop his legs off!

I did hear you can do it by standing them on a tennis raquet then cutting their claws underneath....

When Suilven was small we used to put him in a loose weave sock and trim the nails as they stuch through the sock. Kept him calm and cosy and let us do the neccessary!

I use all GG stuff :-) its the foot ointment and some deep moisturiser.

My rabbit Mrs Mop even likes the hair dryer!

My pigs are should we say a little pampered!

On a serious note though using a foot ointment on your pigs foot daily means they get used to being handled like that and they have super soft feets @;-)
