This morning Bella didn't surface at breakfast time, so I went under the log to check on her and she was moving around but struggling for breath and quite cold. I took her out and let her breathe some steam from a hot mug to try to clear her airways then took her to bed on a warm hot water bottle. She kept moving her head around and resting it on my nose.

She seemed to want to go back with the others so I put her back for a bit then got them out to swap the bedding over. before putting Bella back in, she kept squirming to get away from me and hide, I tried to give her a bit of water as she seemed quite dry on her ears, she died a few mins after I tried to give her some water and now I feel like it's all my fault. I don't know her age exactly but she was between 6 & 7, I took her in just under 3 and a half years ago.

She is my NICEST, most gentlest pig, I took her in 3 and a half years ago from a friend at work, who has taken her in temporarily as her previous owners were going to unneccesarily have her PTS because her cagemate had died. I agreed to have her and she's been a mother and grandmother to all my pigs, so soft and gentle she warms any heart. Cuddle times would be spent sitting on my chest chirping away(not running off like the others).

she was happily munching away at veggie time last night. I knew straight away this morning that she wouldn't make it through today, but now I feel as though I contributed to her departure by trying to give her some water.. Just wondering if anyone else in the piggy herd has experienced a similar thing when a pig has been dying? I'm so devastated and going to miss her to the end of the earth <3 <3

Oh no! I am so sorry you lost such a special and beautiful girl. There is no way her passing was anything to do with you so please do not think that. She was a great age and it sounds like it was old age. What an awful shock for you. I really feel for you.

Thank you for your lovely words, sorry I've not been on for so long, had a few other losses on the way(one of the pigs (noisy) and our 14 1/2 year old spaniel in december). Hurting lots right now. It means alot to know you're all there and I hope your pigs are all happy and healthy x

Mouse and bear are so jumpy, they know their surrogate mum has gone :'(

Bear was just lying next to her and licking her <3

Here is the day I brought you home to accompany Cherry

I love you Bellabingbong x

I'm so sorry. It sounds like she was shutting down. Night night Bella.

How heartbreaking for you to lose such a lovely piggie. Popcorn free at the rainbow bridge Bella x

I am sorry your lost your gorgeous special little one. Please don't blame yourself one bit, the water would no way have played any part. It was unfortunately just her time. Huge hugs to you at this sad time.

Sleep well little girl
RIP Bella

HUGS

I am very sorry! It sounds very much like you caught her in the latest stages of organ (more likely multi-organ) failure when somebody is often uncomfortable for a short while; her body had already mostly shut down when you found her. What an upsetting experience for you!

Sadly, there is nothing you can do in a situation like that, but to make her as comfy as you can under the circumstances. You didn't kill her; she'd already mostly crossed the Rainbow Bridge anyway! Take comfort from the fact that you were with her and did your best to make her last moments easier on her!

RIP Bella

aww I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. Please don't blame yourself for anything, it sounds to me like you made her lovely and comfortable at the end which she will have appreciated. Sleep well Bella x
