thats a good price :)

and a excellent success rate!

good luck.. its my travis's turn soon hopefully :) x

Thank you, it is a good price i was expecting much higher and I'm still nervous about it, going to keep Percys weight gaining up, hes upto 800g (checked him just now) and fingers crossed everything will go well in surgery!

The vet surgery phoned me back and asked if i wanted to come in and speak to the vet for any more questions so thats what I'm going to do :)) Hehe! Will let you know how it goes when i get back in half an hour or so :)

Just came back from the vets, Percy-Roo is booked in for July 5th, 9.30 am which is his consultation day, and if everything is okay he'll be operated on after, if not another date will be booked.

Percy, if everything goes okay, will be able to come home at 5 that evening with a course of baytril. I've also been told to order some critical care just in case he doesnt eat. So i'll try to find that on the internet :)

This is a good website for medical supplies: http://www.vetuk.co.uk/

I am impressed that the vets have even suggested having Critical Care at the ready - most vets don't prepare you for dealing with loss of appetite after an op.

I would also suggest having prebiotics ready for the baytril; if necessary, you just mix in a pinch with the Critical Care.

Here are more tips for post op care: http://www.guinealynx.info/postop.html

Hopefully, you won't need all that, but it is better to be prepared than to panic.

Well done on doing your homework!

I'd say, on top of the critical care, get some fibreplex or similar (probiotic but also firms up faeces) to give alongside the antibiotics, and also some soluble vit C tablets if you dont have them already (Jeff needed them and went bananas over the orange flavoured ones rolleyes). I now keep these things "in stock" as they are handy commodities to have in the event of an unwell piggy over night. The last thing you want is to bring him home, and find hes not eating after the vets close!

One of my trio came to me already neutered, I had the two Daves neutered by my local vet, no problems at all, but then, I didn't expect there to be any - he's a small animal specialist, and I've worked with him several times over the years and he's an incredibly accomplished surgeon. Post op check after 2, 5 and 10 days. No antibiotics given, although Big Dave did develop a snuffle after the anaesthetic so they gave him some Baytril as a precaution.

Jeff however, was neutered by the RSPCA (They will never touch another one of my animals!) and looked like he'd been butchered. The incisions were uneven - one was three times the length of the other, and he was badly glued back together, which was a potential risk with healing. They sent him home with some baytril to be used for 5 days, but the wrong dose mallethead They also did a dental exam on him while he was under GA (due to his missing teeth etc) and his vet notes said that he had lost his canine teeth rolleyes

I took him to work for his post op checks, again, seeing small animal specialists that I trust, and he had a post op check at 3 days, 10 days, 14 days, 21 days and 28 days, as they were concerned about his stupidly large wounds and his dodgy glue job. He was on Baytril for this whole time (at the correct dose!) along with fibreplex. He was ok in himself, and eating like a horse straight away afterwards, despite having no teeth rolleyes

I'd recommend that you have post op checks more frequently than 1 week and 1 month. They will be fine with this at the vets, it's just a case of a nurse looking at it, and getting an opinion from the vet if he/she has any concerns. Where I work, its routine to have a POC after 3 days and 10 days, and then as necessary afterwards - by all means keep the 4 week appt, they seem like they know the potential for complications when it looks like it's all healed.

Thank you Wiebke, I'll be ordering the medical supplies tonight :)

I wasnt expecting to be advised Critical Care, i knew that i had to get some in but i wasnt sure of what type or brand etc. thankfully the vets given me a list.

Ooo okies I'll have a look for some prebiotics, and thank you so much for the weblink i'm having a read through it now.

Thank you so much again, for all your advice and support throughout this thread. xx

Oh my! Thank you so much Amanda for your informative post! I honestly cant thank you enough you've been very helpful.

Awww I'm so glad you found your two Dave's a trustworthy and well informed vet, I'm sorry to hear about Jeff though...is he okay now? Has the wounds healed up okay?

Righty, I'll organise a couple more post op checks with the vet -she did give me an out of hours vet number and her own number to call too if any complications should arise. :)

I'm sorting out all Percys post op medication tonight too. I like to be organised!

Is this the soluble vit C tablets you were on about? If not do you know where I might be able to find them?

Help!

I'm really confused with syringes, which one would you suggest for feeding? :{ I cant remember what size or type we used for Artie when he was syringe fed..doh!

http://www.vetuk.co.uk/veterinary-s...t-syringes-3-part-needle-mount-syringes-p-735

http://www.vetuk.co.uk/veterinary-s...-syringes-2-part-needle-mount-syringes-p-5205

Thank you!

Use a 1ml syringe, but cut the end off (the narrow bit where the needle would attach) - your vet should be happy to give you some - just ask them to cut the little end bit off with a pair of nail clippers. This makes a good feeding syringe, which will allow you (should you need to!) to feed him without just getting water into him, and leaving the rest of the solid stuff in the syringe! A 1ml syringe is the perfect size for a little piggy mouth.

Jeff is fine now - no complications, but I think that was mainly due to just being aware of the potential for problems, and preventing them as much as possible.

I can't remember what vit C tablets I used for Jeff - I got them from a pharmacy though - they were just childrens soluble orange flavour vit C.

Also, I forgot to mention in my previous post, that baytril tastes disgusting! It's really bitter! it might be worth getting some ribena cordial in just in case he won't take the baytril - you can mix a tiny bit of ribena in with it & it makes it more palatable for them. Also has vit C in ;)

I'm so glad Jeff is much better now, i think its best to do your homework and be aware of problems/ know the signs to look for esp with surgery such as neutering. So many problems can arise during and after surgery :(

Ahhhh! I know what vit C tablets your on about now, i think i took them as a kid hehe :)) I'll pick some up at the weekend whilst I'm in town.

Thank you for the ribena trick I'll get some ribena in too. Artie (my other piggie) was on baytril last year and we found putting a tiny amount of marmalade on the end of the syringe worked a treat, we just poped it in his mouth whilst he was licking the end and quickly squirted it in! Much easier than trying to keep him still for his medicine :))

Thank you again, I cant thank you enough!

Tomorrow is the day

Percy-Roos Op is tomorrow morning, I can't believe its come so quickly.

Hes had a bath this aftynoon, so he's all smelling nice for the vets tomorrow. I was going to clip his nails but i cant find the piggie nail clippers hmm..anywhoos I'm trying to be calm and collective for P-Roos sake!

Please, if you can, send Percy lots of healing and speedy recovery vibes :)

Gosh its so nerve racking, i don't think I'll be sleeping tonight :{

Good luck Percy! Don't let them shave too much of your gorgeous hair!

You could ask the nurse to clip his nails while hes under GA

hope it goes well. when rufus had his op i was totally breaking down in tears throughout the day, it's such a relief to get the call to say they've come round! i'm sure he will be fine. fingers and toes crossed! xx

He's okay! Hurrah! I'm going to go and pick him up now so he'll be home soon will let you know how he is when i get back from the vets :)

Heyoo just a quick update :)

Its been a long afternoon, so much worry! Went to collect Percy at the vets, and I ended up in tears (the lady next to me had her bun in for a spay yesterday and unfortunately she went down hill every quickly they kept her in overnight but she didnt make it this morning :(

I felt terrible as she left at the same time as me and I was taking my little boy home. So sad it really hit home how major the surgery is.

Anyways Percy is finally at half ten at night perking up. Since five I've been given him 1ml of CC every hour just to see him through, as he hasn't been eating or drinking.

However after his last feed he started wheeking and three poops (so proud) and has started to nibble on some hay, and a nibble of some carrot.

His wound area is really clean, the vet has used surgical glue to close the wound up. The vet gave me a three page report/sheet (which I wasnt expecting!) on the surgery, the process and aftercare and numbers to contact.

I have an appointment on Thursday with the vet to check that hes okay and another in a weeks time. So hopefully Percy-Roo will keep going from strength to strength.

Hopefully on the road to recovery. Bless him. Hope he starts to perk up and feel a bit better soon. Took Ozzie's stitches out yesterday (he was not impressed with me) he was castrated about 14 days ago. I hope your boy bounces back as well as he has.

Sending love his way! All my girls send him kisses.

Thank you, I'm so glad hes perked up a bit now (hes wheeking and moving about a bit) Hope Ozzie keeps up well, and enjoys his new life with the girlies! :)

Thank you for the love and Percy-Roo likes the girlies kisseys! :))

Glad Percy-Roo is doing ok. He'll be his usual self in no time! Give him a gentle nose rub from me and my boys send healing wheeks to him.

Thank you Percy-Roo appreciates the nose rubs :) Poor baby, he'll be better soon! :)

Percy-Roo, been thinking about you
you might be fairly sore
but in a few weeks
you'll be excited to meet
a couple of sow ...or more !

x>>

P-Roo has had lots of poops during the night hurrah! Hes a wee chilly this morning though so i've put a layer of bubble wrap under the vet bed, a pile of scrap fleece so he can make a nest and another layer of blankets on his cage. :)

Just to let everyone know.....

Percy-Roo went back to the vets yesterday and his manly parts look nearly back to normal. He wheeked at the vet, and then left him a little present (how kind!):))

Anywhoos he's back to himself today, upto no good munching newspaper, climbing on his hidey (even though i've been trying to discourage it!) popcorning and eating for England.

I do have a question though, one i didnt research.....

when can i let Percy-Roo have run time (indoors and out)?

Great to hear that!

Percy-Roo can have run time as soon as his wound has healed enough so it is completey knit together and strong enough to not to rip when a piggy goes overboard.

If I remember rightly, Hywel had to stay in his smaller pen for two weeks post op (and if I remember properly was NOT happy about it!). My Minx' bladder stone scar was pretty much knit together by 10 days post op.

Thank you Wiebke :) I couldnt find any information on run time and the vets care sheet didnt mention it so I wasnt sure whether to wait till six weeks or not :)

Ohh goodness the vet did say it should be healed within ten to fourteen days, we have another vet visit next week. I think Percy will be driving me crazy until then. He was attempting to climb the bars of the cage this afternoon and ping them.mallethead

If it is any consolation, my Minx was the same after her bladder stone op! mallethead

At least you know that your boy is doing as fine as they get, if I can offer that scant bit of consolation amongst your feelings of exasperation - it can be every bit as bad as keeping a four year old child in bed...
