Hello, I have decided to neuter my Simon to be with my 2 girls so he is not lonely any more. But after looking online I feel the vet I go to is overcharging me! They quoted me $350 and UP as well as a visit before the surgery at $55! Are they really over charging me? I have tried looking at other places but not many neuter guinea pigs. Any recommendations of cheaper places around my area? I understand that it is a surgery and is costly but other people I have talked to only was charged $150. Please help! I want my boar to be with his friends and no longer alone but $400 is crazy for my budget. And I do not wish to get another boar for him as he is very picky when I did try such a thing. Thank you!

If you are US based I would suggest looking on Guinea lynx they have a US vet list and are very US centric

I live in Kentucky and mine were both $150-$200, $350 does sound like a lot. There were only two vets in my area that would do it. I didn’t price the other one because I really liked this vet and he has tons of experience with piggies. Just make sure you find a vet that knows guinea pigs, thyey are complicated little creatures!

Maybe ask others where they had their piggies done and if they were happy with the vet and the process?

I do think you also need to consider the type of vet you are using and your location.

For example a visit to the vet in my village costs 30 Swiss Francs, whereas a visit to the specialist (30 mins away) costs 55 Swiss Francs.
But the village vet has 1 regular x-ray machine, and the specialist clinic is spread over 3 floors and has 2 x-ray machines, a special dental x-ray machine, and an MRI machine :yikes:. It is great to have all of that specialist equipment available, but the harsh reality is that someone also has to pay for it.

So I use my local vet (who is wonderful but not a specialist) for routine things like hay pokes and skin problems, and go to the specialist for more complex issues (dental stuff, infections, etc).
