New girl Patsy has either enlarged kidneys or ovarian cysts

My new adoptee Patsy had her health check today with the vet. She was given a clean bill of health except for enlarged kidneys or ovarian cysts. They don't seem to hurt her. The vet said she didn't think it was ovarian cysts as she has no other symptoms but didn't want to rule it out. Rachel (vet) said that if it was kidneys she would be drinking lots and weeing lots too. As I have only had Patsy for a couple of days I don't know what's normal for her. I have her booked in for a scan in 2 weeks so we know what we are dealing with.
 
Oh Patsy. Fingers crossed it’s not severe whatever it is.
 
Poor Patsy, hopefully a scan will tell you what's going on, and hopefully its something that can be managed without any surgery x

I am very sorry! But glad that you are such a good owner.

It is worth noting that 'silent' non-hormonal fluid filled ovarian cysts are the most common variety, especially the older a sow gets; but because they don't cause any issues until they either get very large or burst for some reason and cause peritonitis, they often go unnoticed. Hormonal cysts which cause behaviour changes and the 'classic' symptoms are usually seen in sows between 2-4 years of age. Any 'hard' ovarian cysts should be removed as they are the ones with a high likelihood of turning cancerous in older age. Ovarian cyst is not necessarily like ovarian cyst.

That said, kidneys are in my own experience the organ that goes most often in older piggies. The mis-shapen ones do not necessarily cause the classic symptoms of increased water intake and very watery pee. Pain signals are the same as they come from the same general area of the body (the hunching up is usually a sign of pain in the middle of the body or in the spine/kidney/back area).

I hope that a scan can bring clarity. But it is good that she is still symptom free.
 
Oh no. Poor Patsy. Thank goodness you are so on the ball @Betsy and have got her checked out. Hopefully the scan will reveal all.

I’m in same position atm. Violet has scan on Monday. Either ovarian cyst or ‘something more sinister in her gut’ (quote). I’d like to follow this thread. Not bothering her at all atm. Vet only noticed as she’s gone in to have a sticky eye looked at. Getting different opinions about spaying females as a curative option. Some articles say ok. Vet didn’t seem to see it as a problem. Rescue owner said big op and many Guineas die. I don’t know what to do. 😢

Hi @Clarrie please start your own thread to discuss your own piggy's illness, then we can offer you more specific advice on your own particular health issue. It's great that you are following @Betsy 's thread as she is a very experienced piggy mum, but just because of that there might be helpful advice we could give you on your own thread that we wouldnt routinely offer to @Betsy as she is a real piggy pro!
 
Really sorry to read this @Betsy, hope her scan can tell you more and she’ll be ok.
I didn’t notice any excessive drinking with Jess and her kidney problems, Kim also thought she could have ovarian cysts on top but there were no ‘hard feeling’ obvious ones that seemed to bother her, it was the kidneys that were painful for her. She said the kidneys just seemed to be due to old age with her really, with her age we obviously didn’t do too much investigation but really hope the scan goes well for beautiful Patsy :hug:x
 
i hope Patsy has no obvious syptoms/ issues with kidneys or ovaries,you are such a caring owner.i had george who had kidney issues,he just drank alot,and lived till he was 7 years of age.he never seemed bothered by it.xx
 
Oh bless her! Let's hope the scan shows something that can be managed. It's good that she isn't showing any symptoms of being bothered by whatever is going on. Sending hugs and healing vibes!
 
Having Sows and older ones . Myself I've had many girlie probs and kidney ones to deal with.
The postive thing here Jackie is early notice.
Gives you and Patsy a head start . .could be easy treatable or if not then well we here for you and all piggies.
You have already given Patsy (who cannot blame you for pignapping :dri: ) her a great fighting chance and a forever home.

I am just about to take Patsy in for her scan today. I'll let you know what is found 😬
 
Aunty Rachel says Patsy has ovarian cysts. As she is asymptomatic we are not going to do anything about it atm. I know what to look out for so if she starts to display any symptoms, I'll take her straight back. Patsy's kidneys are fine. I'm pleased there's nothing wrong with the kidneys as that would be more problematic.

I’m very glad you got a diagnosis, and glad her kidneys are fine :) hope for the best for beautiful patsy xx
 
Aw, that’s the better of the two, if she has any symptoms then you know what to do. bet the are relieved it’s not kidneys x
