wheekerson

Hello all, my name is Alyce (wheekerson) whichever you'd prefer. :) I've never had a guinea pig before, but growing up I had my fair share of pets.

Anyways, now I am older, live in my own place with my bf, and I've FINALLY convinced him to get a pet. I contacted a local animal shelter yesterday and asked about guinea pigs. They informed me that the only guinea pig they had was in rough condition. They didn't know the age, sex, or anything...I don't really think they cared. They told me if it wasn't adopted within the next week it would be put down. I was heartbroken, so of course, I told them I would adopt the little piggy. I was at work, so I actually went through the adoption interview process over the phone right there, and was in the clear to pick up the piggy whenever I wanted in the next 4 days.

I want to make sure I have everything I need before I bring him or her home. My bf already has already built a C&C cage for the piggy. And a vet trip is already scheduled for next week.

So, what do I need exactly? What is best in terms of food, bedding, toys, hay. What about vitamin C? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need hay now... I think this little piggie needs spoiled, I hope your in the uk.

As animal magic is wonderful.

Hay samples, so he/she can try all the different hays... You'll be in the hay club in no time :).

Do you have hides for the piggy, at first he/she will be very scared so it will give him/her some security.

Have you thought about bedding?

I used excel blackcurrant & oreono piggies but I would find out what the piggies on and stick to that till he settles.

Mind and ask if he gets veggies, and the piggies favourites if they know :).

Last but not least welldone you for for taking the piggy on, hopefully once the piggy settles you could maybe think about a friend!

xx

What's wrong with it? What a shame!

Well I am pleased you are bringing this little one home.

Bedding everyone uses different things. I use fleece with incontenence pads underneath. Food - burgess excel is a good starter - it has alot of vitamin c and is good fibre. Get timothy hay - pets ay home sell timothy hay by the alfalfa king that is excellent.

Get teeth checked at the vets.

Veg needs to be introduced slowly for a newbie like this - ask what they have been fed already and go from there.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Poor little thing, well done for offering him / her a home.
The best place to start is probably in the reference section. Here you will find information about housing, toys, bedding and food.
Will he / she be living indoors or outdoors?

Hi! welcome and well done on you!

The basic diet is as much hay (preferably timothy or orchard grass) as the piggy can eat (it should make the biggest part of his diet). 50g/1cupful of mixed veg a day (in as many servings as you wish) - if your piggy is not used to veg, introduce them slowly, never more than one new variety a day. That way, you do not cause any unwanted tummy upsets. Nuggets at lib at first and then slowly reduced to 1 handful a day.

Make sure that the piggy has a place to hide and don't be heart broken if you do not see too much at first!

Here is a guide to guinea pigs sounds:

Sexing guinea pigs - better have a look yourself; there are too many mistakes and you want to find your piggy a companion once it is better.

I think that that is enough to get on with for now! Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Hello and welcome to the forum. :)p It's great that you can offer this piggy a good life.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you want. There's a lot of information to look through on the forum. I wouldn't worry too much about toys to start. Guinea pigs love things like cardboard tubes stuffed with hay, hideys (an upside down cardboard box with a couple of doorways is good), and things to burrow under.
Guinea pigs can get all the vit c they need from fresh veg and dry food. Parsley is a big favourite here as a treat and can help with getting a pig to trust you. :)

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the pending new arrival.

Hope he/she settles well for you.

If you think of any questions - just yell! :)

welcome to the forum :) and congratulations on becoming a piggy slave :)
I'm disgusted by the shelters attitude towards this poor piggy and so glad that you've offered to give it a home, keep us posted once you've collected him/her, fingers crossed its condition is not too bad x
