I know we've had a spate of bad weather recently but there are two new areas of low pressure due to hit before Xmas so it's not over yet.

The first tonight and through tomorrow will bring more torrential rain/flooding and gusty winds thoughout the country but is relatively "normal intensity" for this time of year.

Of more concern is an intense low expected to hit on monday pm through to tuesday morning. If this does go as low as current models are predicting, it will be one of the worst storms ever and nearly equivalent to the 87 hurricane in the south east. At present the Met Office are predicting winds of 60-70mph INLAND across London and the south east for a sustained period of time overnight, with higher gusts on coastal areas. They have already issued a yellow warning - which is unusual so far in advance - and we will have a better idea of just how severe this storm will be by tomorrow evening so expect the warnings to be upgraded over the weekend if it is indeed going to be as bad as predicted.
The North West will also be hit similarly by this storm in terms of wind gusts.
There will also be more torrential rain so more flooding - in Wales, West Midlands and the South East

If it's as bad as currently predicted, there may be a lot of turkeys sitting in ovens with no power on Xmas day. Be prepared, get all pets inside and stay safe everyone. x

Bad weather? tell me about it, I had 5 minutes rest in a 8 and a half hour shift yesterday, numerous RTCs, wagons over, debris in the carriageway, rolling road blocks, dragging RTC damaged cars to the hard shoulder! I was soaking wet and shattered by the time I got home!:yikes:

Thanks for the info - we are supposed to be flying on Tuesday morning, so we are keeping our fingers very firmly crossed at the moment! :(

When you say North West, is that just North West England/Wales or will Scotland be affected?

Thanks for the info, glad I'm travelling back from Preston to Plymouth on the Sunday and not the Monday now!

UPDATE:

The Met office have now extended the warning of severe winds to cover the whole of the country on monday and tuesday with extended timelines from 9am monday to midnight on Xmas eve for some areas. Rain warnings are still in effect for West Midlands/Wales/South West/South East.

"There is the likelihood of widespread gales, with gusts to around 70 mph for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, west Wales, northwest England, as well as southern coasts of England. Gusts of 80-90 mph are possible, the greatest likelihood of these values being towards the northwest. Although many central and eastern areas of England should see lesser wind gusts, the combination of these winds with heavy rain and heavy holiday traffic may well increase impacts"

All warnings are still "yellow" but they may be upgraded to amber tomorrow once the next round of models have been produced so please keep checking the EA and Met Office websites for your area.

Please also be aware another low pressure area....even worse than the upcoming one....... is currently modelled to hit UK on 27th with a further one on 31st Dec. Hopefully these will be downgraded as they approach and the models change. Also, as they get nearer, the forecasters will be a better idea of which areas of the country are most at risk and from what.

I know there's been a lot of storms recently - but please do not underestimate these weather systems/warnings. This December has been one of the most unusual series of weather events EVER... particularly ref the extent, frequency, severity and depth of these really bad low pressure events. From my limited understanding I believe this is partly because the jet stream is STILL over the UK instead of it being a lot further south by this time of year and is therefore fuelling this succession of really intensive lows.....(and partly because of something I don't understand yet ref the polar vortex)

The best place this Xmas break is for animals and hoomans to be indoors in secure buildlings from mid-day monday - be it houses, sheds, barns or stables...and be prepared for power cuts.

I think it is so nice that you all look after one another as a community making sure that all critters and humans are safe and sound. Even though I am in the States, I am thinking of you all who have to travel and stay in this weather. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. Stay Safe. <3

Thanks for your updates. Thankfully my grandparents are coming up from north Wales tomorrow so will hopefully miss this weather. I've been trying to warn my friend who's getting the ferry to Ireland on Monday - he seems to think it just means he'll get a little sea sick on the journey

Winds picking up in my area =(
The wind was so bad OH had to leave his bike at work and get a lift home! Apparently tiles were blown of the shop roof!

It's been really windy here and raining non stop since last night in Eastbourne!

It's absolutely blowing a hoolie on top of Shap on the M6. its also torrential rain. I'm parked on the hard shoulder waiting for recovery to arrive so I can put a lane 3 closure on to retrieve a car from the central reservation. It slid off the road travelling too fast.

Driving to Norfolk at the crack of dawn on Xmas eve. Meep!
Fingers crossed we'll be far enough south that it won't be too bad! At least the roads will be quiet!

A little valedictory twist from the passing front..........wait til the next one arrives monday!

Sorry you're out in this = not pleasant.
Thank you for helping to keep the roads safe Boss.

The south will be "copping" this one. Please check the forecasts/timngs -you might prefer to decide to leave after mid-day.

Aw bless Boss....and hugs!

I did a cross country route myself today here in Sussex and very nearly didn't get to my destination owing to surface flood water blocking the route

Hope you have got home safely tonight.

Shame you're not on duty on the M1 tomorrow....just in case I happen to get into trouble

I got home eventually, it took just over an hour. I'll have enough on my hands later, I'm patrolling Shap summit and Lune Gorge on the M6. Very picturesque during the summer, but lethal during the winter for the torrential rain, high winds and flash hail storms/heavy blizzards, which cause multiple RTCs in a short space of time!

Met office warnings upgraded today for the incoming storm tomorrow/Xmas Eve. Please plan and prepare..... and think carefully about timings of any any proposed travel arrangements.

This is not hype or scaremongering...we have one of the worst weather storm systems in living memory hitting us...... both tomorrow.....and again on 27th.

On a personal note: The Pebble piggies would appreciate your good vibes tomorrow afternoon and through the night.
We have been upgraded today to amber warning for rain and it is now not a case of "if" the stream floods but more "when" and "by how much"....and whether "the new flood defences will hold in their first real test".
Forecast winds here in Sussex are still stronger than St Jude's storm when a tree narrowly missed the house when it came down...and current ground saturation means the stream will flood sometime over the next 24-48 hours given the forecast amount of rain.
We will not be leaving anything to chance - shame though that the run-up to Xmas will be mainly about flood/emergency preparations rather than Xmas tree decorations!

Please stay safe everyone and make sure your animals are both under cover and "well above ground level" if you are in a flood risk area.

Wishing you all the best of luck. At least you are aware of the oncoming weather and can make the best preperations/precautions possible. Keeping all fingers, toes, claws, paws and everything else crossed for you here in Glasgow xx

Thank you Nicola....I appreciate your support.
I am trying to remain rational and positive even though I am scared stiff at what tomorrow might bring! I just don;t ever want to go through anther insurance clam to reinstate my house by Cowboy Builders like the last one in 2007.

The most important thing is that you all survive the storm. Hopefully the house will also make it through unscathed and you won't need to worry about having to rebuild it again. All you can do is your best to prevent as much damage as possible and you have the knowledge of the potential weather to ensure you protect yourselves and your house as best as possible, imagine how much worse it'd be if you were hit by it completely unaware and unprepared.

You will do your best and that is all you, or anyone else, can ask of yourself. Good luck, tomorrow is going to be a tough day but you will make it through  xx

Pebble, I just want to wish you Good Luck, I wish there was something we could do to help, its so unfair at this time to year too.

Good Luck to you and everyone else. xxxxxxxx

Wishing you the best, Pebble, and hoping that you are not flooded too badly!

We are not looking forward to having to drive to Gatwick Airport overnight and are still hoping that we can join my family for Christmas celebrations tomorrow night! :(

Setting off shortly to work, reports of 2 wagons blown over already and the wind is not even at it's strongest yet - I'm in for a hellish shift I think!
