Hi, we have Wilfred a loan boar at present, just over a year ( he did have a cage mate but he died) .
Wilfred is it seems, un tamable, he is scared of every single thing & will do wall of death /jump/leap/climb his way out of things. Once you eventually manage to hold him, hes sweet, likes head rubs & has licked in the past- he is just terrified of every single thing.
I have tried sitting quietly talking, feeding herbs, all the things that have worked over the years with our other piggies but nothing seems to work- he has always been like this even with his cage mate :-(
At moment he lives in a 5ft outdoor hutch with the girls on full view so he can chat to them, I'm wondering if a small indoor cage is the way to go? we tried it before but was worried he was going to break a leg in the bars the way he did wall of death to avoid us.
I dont want to neuter him as post op he will be crazy & fear he will hurt himself, so contemplating finding a young male to bond him with.
any taming tips?

Hi!

You may find the tips in these guides here helpful:

The rescue I would strongly recommend to contact is Wheek&Squeak in near Southampton; they are by a far the best and most experienced rescue in your area with plenty of experience with totally freaked out piggies.

Could you please move your skittish boy right next to the girls where he could interact with them through mesh; their calm presence may help to calm him down as he is feeling very exposed and lost right now.

Thanks Wiebek ive just managed to adapt a smaller indoor cage, that now seems safe for him & can put him next to 2 girls for company. Have added lots of extra hideys so he can avoid us all if he wants, i think he needs the constant flow of people to learn not to be terrified. Fingers crossed he mellows a bit x

Hi!

Please use our piggy whispering tips to communicate in his language and to assure him that you are not a predator. Also make sure that you avoid any predatory behaviours to trigger his high alert prey animal instincts for the time being.
Please read the links I have given you in my last post. The more you can allay his prey animal reflexes, the further you will get. Place a towel over the cage to give him a feeling of safety and protection.

I have had a fair number of freaky piggies in my time; eventually they have all come round although there have some who had a high alert default setting.

Tramping through all the time is not going to bring him out.
