Hi, I just wanted to ask a couple of quick questions to see if this normal guinea pig behaviour. I have 2 female guinea pigs who are nearly 6 months old. Is it normal for guinea pigs not to squeak? I've heard one squeak (with my head up against the hutch as it was so faint) but not the other. They sometimes do make tiny squeaks to each other and make a purring noise when I put them in/out of the hutch (which I think means they can be happy or scared?)
Also whenever I get them out to put them in the run, I talk to them and have them on my lap for a few minutes, I usually offer them some food. I give them or my daughter does a nice gentle stroke and rub behind the ears but they both flick there heads up or away as much to say get your hand off me!
I would say they are very well looked after and cared for. They seem really happy when they go in their run and run around like crazy and popcorn jump. They do come over to the side of the run when we go out as if to say hello.
I just wondered if the squeaking will come later on as they are only 6 months old. I said to my partner I was going to find a YouTube video of guinea pigs squeaking to see if it would encourage ours to squeak! (I won't put his reply 😅)
With the head flicking is that normal as well? Like I said they are handled carefully and I always oversee my daughter handling them.
Thanks any positive feedback would be really helpful. Apologies if this is on the wrong thread.

Some piggies are more vocal than others - yours seem to want to be quiet ones!

The head flicking - they are most likely saying they don’t want to be touched.
One of my boys doesn’t mind a head scratch but once he has had enough he has no problem in either shouting at me or pushing my hand away

Some piggies are just quiet and hardly ever say a word. My RB piggy Cutey Pie Dennis was like this. When he said anything it was a cause for celebration!

I adopted Patsy last September and she didn't say anything for at least 6 months. Now she is happily settled in and realises this is her final forever home (her 3rd home) she can be quite vocal. Maybe yours are just quiet piggies or will take a bit longer to feel settled and then their voices will appear.

Sounds normal.
Of mine, one never stops talking, one rarely ever talks and the other will wheek for food but I have heard them occasionally chatter to each other.

My male is more vocal than the females and whenever he moves around he's chuntering on to let us all know where he's going! Your girls are talking to each other quietly so as not to attract the attention of predators - piggies are generally very shy ☺️

I think your piggies will find their voices when they have something to say to you - one will possibly be more vocal than the other depending on who is dominant. We bring a pile of grass in every morning and our piggies all know the routine... the girls shriek in excitement when they hear you return with the rustley bag! If your pigs lived indoors you would no doubt hear a bit more from them - especially once they had learned the sound of the fridge door opening 😂 but you might then be wishing they'd keep it down!
