hi
Pumpkin seems to be making the same noise that she makes when we pick her up and smooth her like a chirping purring type noise. Except she's doing it in her hutch which she hasn't done before. Is she ok?
Thanks

Hi there :)
The purring can mean a number of things and there's such a subtle difference to our ears that it can be hard to tell what a piggy means by the sound alone, when purring.
May I ask if Pumpkin has a companion? The purring noise, or rumble, is often used to communicate dominance or attempted dominance with their companions. Sometimes even a piggy on it's own will do this whilst 'strutting' around the cage, or sometimes moving around in a deliberate and slow-looking motion with a sway to the bottom, and it means that she's letting the world know that her cage belongs to her.
Purring whilst sitting on your lap can be a happy sound, but it can also mean "I'm getting annoyed". It's hard to tell the difference in sound alone so it's best to go by body-language.

Can you describe what she is actually doing when she is purring? And are there any other piggies around, and how they respond?

Purring is not a sign of illness or depression, or anything of that sort. The most common reasons for the purr (or rumble) is to tell others that they are in charge or want to be in charge of an area and of each other.

Hi thank you for your reply I videoed it and am going to ask my daughter to upload through you tube.

She is on her own. One time she was doing it whilst lying down going to sleep another she was just stood at the front of the cage looking out. Normally shebknly wheeks forfood when we go into the kitchen!

Hi @Wookey78 , sorry for not seeing the post earlier :)

I've just listened three times and cannot make out any purring sound. I can make out a sound that sounds like a piggy chuntering away but it's not quite clear to me. Plus I couldn't see the piggy to see what she was doing at the time. Sorry I just cannot tell.

Some piggies are noisier than others. I had one, she lived on her own, and with others (long story), and she chuntered away no matter what. In fact I joked that she couldn't walk without engaging her voice-box, but it seemed true. Another person called her a sewing machine piggy, as she was constantly chut-chut-chuttering every time she moved. I have another piggy who is a rather vocal and chutters, but not as much as the other one did. Some are very vocal, and where one will make a sound under a circumstance or mood, another will stay silent.

Unfortunately the noise sounds a little distorted from the recording and I just cannot 'get' it.

Edit: Listened with my headphones on and I still can't make it out clearly but it actually sounds like a cross between two noises:
1) when one of mine is a bit annoyed with another piggy. And when I pick Penny up she protests with a similar noise and squirms, but settles down again once put on my knee. She makes that noise when I cut her nails too and trim her bottom fur!
2) when a piggy works itself up in anticipation to something without launching into a wheek, I will hear a noise similar to that when I've not fed them yet but they know I am in the room, and they all join in and gather to the bars and make a squabble-chut excitable noise (without actually squabbling, it sounds sort-of squabbly if that makes sense) before working up to a full-on wheek when I get the message and get up to feed them!

I don't know, I am a bit confused.

Hmm listened again.... Every time I listen it sounds like a protest to me, a reaction to something, but I can't make it out well enough. Sorry x

It might be because the piggy is excited. Your near the cage when he's doing it? If my pigs can hear me open the fridge or chop veggies with a knife they make a really loud noise just like that! Even sometimes if they just hear one of us come in they make a noise quite similar. Just make sure you give him some attention when he does it, make sure he has food, water etc. Piggies have funny little ways of telling us what they want lol x

Thank you! I obviously used the wrong words to describe her noise sorry about that! She does make this. Lose normally when we pick her up but I've never heard it so from the hutch so was mainly worrried she was in pain or trying to tell me something was wrong.

Chloe she does makes lots of noise when I go past or open the fridge but it's always a wheeking noise.

Maybe she is just becoming a little porker and expcexting food. My step dad keeps feeding her dandelions when I am at work lol that's on top of her nuggets and fresh veg!

I'll try get a video of my piggies doing the similar noise. It's probably just cos she expects attention/food whenever anyone goes past. Or is there a tv or something near her ? I'm always worried incase there's a noise in the spare room that freaks my pigs out. But that noise doesn't sound like a really frightened pig I don't think x

It sounds like the noise that Jingle makes when she is moving around, often when she is heading towards Mistletoe (Jingle is the dominant sow).
